Malaria kills 3000 children a day according to UNICEF and yet the news is full of the corona virus.

You can’t tell the difference between these two news items?

Mummypigisalwaysright · 29/02/2020 07:06

And malaria is preventable and treatable. Yet children are still dying.

BuckingFrolics · 29/02/2020 07:14

I agree OP. But, you know, kids are not economically active, markets don't crash when they die in thousands. Political lines aren't challenged or overthrown. National infrastructures don't bend or break.

I realise with regret that for mankind (and yes I mean "man"kind) Money and power are absolutely everything.

FredaFrogspawn · 29/02/2020 07:16

Yup, that’s it really. It doesn’t affect us if 3000 children die but a pandemic across the world does. That doesn’t make it right, of course.

I heard the first case of coronavirus has been detected in Africa. That is terrifying.
In countries with very high levels of poverty, poor infrastructure and poor medical care, simple illnesses kill every day. You could OP just as easily have posted about the number of children killed by diarrhoea every year. But in Britain this is very rare. Because our children are not suffering from malnutrition and we can easily get them medical care when needed. Most of us understand the difference between the situation in Britain and in very poor countries.
If about 15% of people with coronavirus need hospitalisation, then there will be a lot of deaths in very poor countries. Most of these though will not be officially recorded as the virus because again there is not the infrastructure to reliably do this. Well-off people in cities will get hospital treatment, but many will not.

janemaster · 29/02/2020 07:21

The difference is that many diseases that ravish very poor countries can be treated. Coronavirus has no vaccine and no real treatment except supporting breathing.

Member869894 · 29/02/2020 07:22

can’t

Yup , the difference is Africa (some
Counties ) sadly can not obtain the medication for their people

Coronavirus will hurt the developed
World and the global economy in way that maybe we can’t even imagine yet

But power and money indeed
