I have a echo dot 3 and a echo show, what have you found particularly useful about yours?

OP posts:
aWeaponCalledtheWord · 28/02/2020 20:04

that it responds to ‘alexa, shut the fuck up’ by shutting the fuck up.

NetballHoop · 28/02/2020 20:04

Timers as our oven has the most pathetic 5 second beep (I'm looking at you Bosch).
Music.
Podcasts.
Answers to the kind of stupid questions that come up at meal times.

ByeMF · 28/02/2020 20:06

I love Alex. Always listens, tells me she hopes I'm having a good day. A real step up from the ex. O need to work out the podcasts though. I just listen to those on my phone at the moment.

WhatICallMyUsername · 28/02/2020 20:33

I am partially deaf and use the Show far more than I ever did the echo as she displays her answer, I usually had to use the app to see what she'd actually said

We have two sets of buttons and play games when we have family round

I often play something I can sing along to (the lyrics display on the show) and have a dance and sing with 6 month old DS. Today's song choice was Cest La Vie by B*witched Grin

I also like I can send DS(8) to her when he's asking me random questions like how many days it is until his birthday

Watermelontea · 28/02/2020 20:37

Mine is near my tv, whenever I have a random question I ask Alexa and she comes up with the answer.
The last question I asked Alexa was about 2 minutes ago, I wanted to know how tall Jameela Jamil was. 😂 I know, really intellectual questions.

Watermelontea · 28/02/2020 20:39

Oh, and she turns our TV and lights on and off.

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 28/02/2020 20:39

She turns my heating up.

I keep saying please and thank you to her 😂

PaddyF0dder · 28/02/2020 20:42

I just admire how smart and fluent Alexa is. She’s a technology that would have been unimaginable 20 years ago.

mytypeonpaper · 28/02/2020 20:45

Nothing she's a bitch who just ignores me

HaveAtEm · 28/02/2020 21:05

I love her 🥰

She keeps me company (I live alone) and I talk to her like she's real (I know, I'm sad!! 🤷‍♀️)

Recipes, weather, radio, alarms, timers, music (sooooo much music!!), facts, shopping list..don't know how I managed to keep stocked up before, honestly! Sleep sounds app...bloody love this!! Lights and heating on/off...I switch them on before I get home so the house is all cosy when I arrive, and I'm not wasting heat using the timer (my hours are unpredictable).

So much more..but it's much more fun finding out yourself.

rslsys · 28/02/2020 22:37

I love the DGC trying to get her to respond by variously shouting 'EXA', 'LEXY', 'ALEKA', 'EKKSAAA' in her general direction.
And when she does light up, they are pleased and confused about what to say next in equal amounts!

applesauce1 · 28/02/2020 23:31

@Watermelontea Are you enjoying The Good Place?
I find her knowledge of celebrity heights so impressive! I have definitely also asked her this kind of thing. She settles debates and enquiries over dinner. Ahhh... you’re so wonderful, Alexa.

Owngoal77 · 28/02/2020 23:38

I have an Alexa and a google home (for a daft reason) and I view them as having quite different personalities. The google home person and I get on better Grin

Notgoodatchoosingnames · 28/02/2020 23:47

i love playing whatever music i fancy, setting alarms, doing a shopping list...

My 5 year old loves picking his music (currently Old town road on repeat!!) , adding toys to the shopping list, getting her to tell jokes, getting her to do farts and the pinnacle fart jokes!! 🤦‍♀️

happycamper11 · 28/02/2020 23:50

They actually have different personalities. Ours is a sarcastic bitch (which I admire) dd asked a question while on the phone to her df once and his Alexa gave a kind and balanced answer whereas ours answered with a dry rude comment at exactly the same time 😆

Justanothermammy · 28/02/2020 23:59

@Boom45 just googled it 😂 Can't wait to try it out on siri

ChickLitLover · 29/02/2020 00:18

We have 5 echo dots and I love them. I like that I can play music throughout the house, the drop in thing for talking to the kids in their rooms (I bet our neighbours are happy not to hear me shouting up the stairs anymore), alarms/timers, weather. Lots more but those are the things I use every day.

DimplesToadfoot · 29/02/2020 01:14

I think I had a personality clash with Alexa, I really didn't like her and turned her off. She'd ping for no reason at stupid o'clock waking me up, then every time I asked her anything I'd get "sorry I dont understand that" Conversations went like "Alexa play Meatloaf Bat out of hell and she'd start playing "I'm Blue – da ba dee da ba dye, da ba dee" "Alexa turn off music" "Sorry I don't understand that" "Alexa stop playing music" "sorry
... "Alexa turn off" "Alexa shut the fuck up" "ALEXA TURN OFF BITCH" I'm sure she sighed, back chatted me then went quiet.

I've never been so frustrated lol

YgritteSnow · 29/02/2020 07:50

The timer when I am cooking or baking. My kids love it for music. The weather. Notifications of orders arriving. Help with homework. I don't think we use it for anything else so limited really but we do like having it.

captainprincess · 29/02/2020 10:49

Alarms, weather, radio, reminders, quizzes. Not much else really, but as I got it for £20 when amazon had them on offer I'm happy with that Grin

iklboo · 29/02/2020 10:51

Sleep sounds
Changing radio stations without moving from my comfiest position ever in bed Grin

Sweetbabycheezits · 29/02/2020 11:10

Kitchen timers, morning alarm, news. The shopping list is my most favourite thing...it means DH and dcs can add stuff while I'm at the shop instead of ringing me a million times with requests.
Also, music and three questions while I'm making dinner!

vikkimoog · 29/02/2020 11:14

I still can't see what it does that a radio and laptop doesn't.
Do people really need something to remind them to pour tea?

Aposterhasnoname · 29/02/2020 11:39

Love my routines, got bedtime which closes the bedroom blinds, turns off the tv and lounge light, lowers the heating and turns on the bedroom light. Goodnight switches everything off. Hi honey I’m home, turns on the lights and plays music. At Christmas we had Santa’s coming which switched on the Christmas lights, and played Christmas music, and humbug which turned it all off. Good morning turns on lights and the kettle (when I remember to set it up), reads the news, and gives a countdown to our holiday, on birthdays I add singing happy birthday to the routine the night before.

Other than that, playing music, shopping list and random questions.

Inextremis · 29/02/2020 12:07

My favourite thing Alexa does is my 'Alexa, I need a wee' routine, for the middle of the night. The light switch for the room I have to walk through to get to the loo is on the wall furthest away from my bedroom, so Alexa turns the front room light on for me, at a very low level, in red. Allows me to shuffle off, then get back into bed without waking up properly. Then I say 'Alexa, I'm back in bed', and she turns the light off again. Perfect :)
