To be stressed about lack of antibacterial hand gel in the shops?

School told us to provide DC with antibacterial hand gel for school. Went to every shop/chemist in town that normally sells this and all sold out. No info on restocks but unlikely as wholesalers have also sold out. Also looked online and have only been able to find some at a very high price on Amazon. So that's that then. We are going to have to rely on good old fashioned hand washing.

Wondering if there are any other products available with the magic 60% alcohol content we could use as an alternative? Any suggestions?

You don’t always have access to soap and water. Hand gel is handy if you are out and about.

ineedaholidaynow · 29/02/2020 14:30

Are most of the ordinary antibacterial hand gels under 60% alcohol?

Riv12345 · 29/02/2020 14:48

Or dettol wipes when you put and about

auslass · 29/02/2020 16:42

Suggest instead buying shares in the companies making hand san. Might be a better use of your cash 💰

middleager · 29/02/2020 16:43

I'm sorry for a stupid question, but can you add alcohol to lesser strength hand gels to make it more effective?

woodchuck99 · 29/02/2020 17:22

I use hand gel quite a bit anyway so I'm bit annoyed that it has sold out everywhere. This didn't happen with Swine flu and I expect a lot has been bought by people who intend to profiteer by selling it at hugely inflated prices on Amazon. I'm sure the manufacturers are racing to produce more maximise their profits though so it will be back in stock soon.

We got some for work from a company in the north east called safechem limited in Birtley. As of Friday they had plenty of stock.

Anti bacterial gel isn't what you need against COVID19 because it's a virus, not a bacterial infection. It wont make any difference at all. What you need to do is wash your hands thoroughly with soap, for the length of time it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice. Or so I heard yesterday on Radio 4, so it must be true

Not true. Some are effective against viruses as well. It depends on the alcohol concentration.

Use tissues, wash hands with soap and water and get a grip...it is not a big thing, it is being hyped up massively...you are more likely to be knocked over crossing the road to go and buy the hand gel. Seriously, the number affected with this is actually very small against population sizes..

Tell the WHO and the thousands of people who have died so far that it's not a big thing and to get a grip.Hmm The risk might be low at the moment but it won't stay like that if people don't take it seriously and it spreads.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 02/03/2020 11:50

Wilko has it back in stock

Sneeze into your elbow. Vampire sneeze.

Washing your hands with plain soap and water for 26 seconds is the most effective way to keep them clean. There are numerous studies on this.

bellinisurge · 02/03/2020 12:13

Two rounds of singing "Happu Birthday to you" while washing your hands with soap and water. Hand gel only if you can't get to that.

Frothybothie · 02/03/2020 12:23

I rather think that those who have died have not died due to not using alcohol hand gel.

ClarencesMum · 02/03/2020 17:24

None in Aldi, Lidl, B&M or chemists near me. School has also asked us to provide some.

Great.

You can buy hand gel here. 500 ml bottle plus smaller top up pump bottles of 100ml. It's 60-70% alcohol, tea tree oil and rosemary oil, both of which are anti viral. It smells lovely and doesn't dry your hands out. Mine has just arrived (thank god)
