To be stressed about lack of antibacterial hand gel in the shops?

School told us to provide DC with antibacterial hand gel for school. Went to every shop/chemist in town that normally sells this and all sold out. No info on restocks but unlikely as wholesalers have also sold out. Also looked online and have only been able to find some at a very high price on Amazon. So that's that then. We are going to have to rely on good old fashioned hand washing.

Wondering if there are any other products available with the magic 60% alcohol content we could use as an alternative? Any suggestions?

I think Amazon is expensive place to look but it is on there and other sites.

I'm stuck in few days and wanted something small enough for school bags - and though fuck it last night I'd get something and I can always look around the shops when I can get out in mean time something is on it's way.

The doctor on This Morning says soap and water is the best thing to use. Talking about how to wash properly and drying with a hand towel.

Slightly worrying that adults have to be told how was wash properly. It’s the first thing I learned on my nursing course many years ago as a teenager.

There was masses in boots yesterday in Paddington.

I'm glad I ordederd last night - it's gone up £11 on amazon since then.

Lordfrontpaw · 28/02/2020 11:55

I think when you are out any about you wonder how grimy your hands are. Public transport is dirty at the best it times and we get a lot of people travelling to and from the airport around us.

GingerGingerGingerGinger · 28/02/2020 11:55

But it's a virus so how will anti-bacterial gel kill it?

And isn't it a bit strange that the school want children to carry around something that is 60% alcohol? It's very dangerous if swallowed.

Lordfrontpaw · 28/02/2020 11:55

RiddleyW - which boots - in the station?

adaline · 28/02/2020 11:56

Antibacterial gel gives people false reassurance. It also dries the skin out due to the alcohol content.

The best treatment against germs is regular, proper hand-washing. With warm water, lots of soap, and washing your hands thoroughly for at least 30 seconds each time. Too many people don't wash their hands properly!

viques · 28/02/2020 11:57

What is the point of kids using antibacterial gel if they have just sneezed or coughed in the classroom? If they have or are incubating corona virus they have just infected everyone at their table , virtuously squirting hand gel is not going to help.

I can see hand gel becoming the new water bottle/sun cream accessory that children must be attached to at all times or they will collapse from dehydration/sun exposure or the common cold.

Teach your kids to use tissues. GIve them tissues . Teach them to wash their hands properly and if you need to organise a PTA bar soap collection drive because it's close to the end of the school financial year and schools are super stretched and having to buy in extra soap and paper towels will break them.

MotherOfAllNameChanges · 28/02/2020 11:58

Just. Wash. Your. Hands.

RiddleyW · 28/02/2020 11:59

Yes - full display when I was in there yesterday early pm.

RiddleyW · 28/02/2020 11:59

Sorry my reply to Lordfrontpaw

Antibacterial hand gel does NOTHING against germs. They’ve studied this over and over

Best way is to wash your hands as hot as you can bare. With a bar of soap. Not sure why a bar of soap. But my friend studies germs. He told me this. So I trust him

You should wash your hands in 60’ heat. But I can barely tolerate that. Let alone my child.

OddBoots · 28/02/2020 12:01

I understand your worry if the school has asked you to supply it but if there isn't any then you can't get any.

Hopefully the school is doing their best to let the children access the sinks to wash their hands and they have enough soap, it can't be easy though.

PineappleDanish · 28/02/2020 12:01

Pointless stuff. Soap and water far more effective.

Would also be questioning what effect antibacterial gel would have against a virus?

RiddleyW · 28/02/2020 12:01

I was told temperature of the water doesn’t matter - why hot?

FizzyIce · 28/02/2020 12:03

@Falcor40 If this was true then they wouldn’t be able to sell it or have the percentage of germs killed on its label . It’s the law

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 28/02/2020 12:04

Centre for Disease Control say temperature of water is irrelevant

Rosebud21 · 28/02/2020 12:05

@20viona agreed, hand washing is best practice, however, taps, running water & soap are not always available. Young children may find it difficult to use tissues

Falcor40 · 28/02/2020 12:05

@RiddleyW

It’s to do with being hot enough to wash the lols off your hands. Where the bacteria live

More effective with hot water. Rather than cold

However. We can’t wash our hands in water that is hot enough to kill all bacteria. But as hot as you can is best.

OddBoots · 28/02/2020 12:06

"You should wash your hands in 60’ heat. But I can barely tolerate that. Let alone my child."

There is no need for that hot, in fact that is more likely to make you rush and that is much less effective. It will also damage the skin and make your hands dry and possibly bleed which is not great for infection control.
