To be stressed about lack of antibacterial hand gel in the shops?

School told us to provide DC with antibacterial hand gel for school. Went to every shop/chemist in town that normally sells this and all sold out. No info on restocks but unlikely as wholesalers have also sold out. Also looked online and have only been able to find some at a very high price on Amazon. So that's that then. We are going to have to rely on good old fashioned hand washing.

Wondering if there are any other products available with the magic 60% alcohol content we could use as an alternative? Any suggestions?

There is a page on Facebook where people buy Bath and body works stuff from the US and sell here . Always tons of hand gel for sale and holders for them too which is ideal for school bags .
I always stock up when I’m in the US

Surfer25 · 28/02/2020 11:20

Oh dear god.

So you get lulled into a false sense of security by using it because it doesn't kill virus and therefore useless against corona.

It's quite worrying how deranged people sound about this.

And it is only on here. No one in real life or at work I know even mentions it.

FizzyIce · 28/02/2020 11:21

Those saying only works for bacterial , yes of course but this will help to stop the spread some germs which can’t be a bad thing and also those saying “just wash your hands !” Not see easy at school , can’t have a class of 30 getting up every two minutes after they’ve coughed or sneezed ..

HasaDigaEebowai · 28/02/2020 11:21

gels with more than 60% alcohol do kill viruses

KidLorneRoll · 28/02/2020 11:22

What, kids aren't capable of using tissues now? Seriously? How shit are parents if a kid can't be taught to sneeze into a tissue without getting it everywhere? My 5 year old manages it quite happily.

It's far better to do that as it can be then thrown away, rather than it just gunking up on jumpers etc.

Anti-bac is useless for viruses, it just helps anti-bacterial resistance along. Schools should be challenged on this nonsense rather than people blindly thinking that smearing a bit of poundshop gel on their hands is in any way a good idea.

Valkadin · 28/02/2020 11:23

People, should not cough or sneeze in to their hands it should be the crook of the elbow. I was taught this donkeys years ago when learning about how to scrub up for theatre and just general how to minimise the spread of germs. Operating theatre by the way.

Newjez · 28/02/2020 11:25

Would plain metholated spirits do the job? I have a bottle in the garage.

fairislecable · 28/02/2020 11:26

Found this easy diy version but looking through it seems that any solution needs to be at least 60% alcohol.

Perhaps decant into small containers for people to use when they are out.

www.wikihow.com/Make-Gel-Alcohol-Hand-Sanitizer

Helps if I attach the link!!

Peanutbutteryogurt · 28/02/2020 11:27

Peanut. The cuticular on Amazon. Is out of stock

Ok that's really weird as it wasn't out of stock when I posted that!

AngryAtYouTube · 28/02/2020 11:28

Anti'bacterial' will be no good against a virus anyway!

DoubleTweenQueen · 28/02/2020 11:29

I wonder if schools do have 60%+ alcohol, and what advice they are giving to parents for supplying their own? Is the message getting across?
Personally, I would prefer to sneeze into a thick tissue held closely around my nose and mouth that could capture most droplets, than anything else.

HasaDigaEebowai · 28/02/2020 11:29

Meths is a last resort. It has chemicals added to it to make it poisonous to deter people from drinking it. Ethanol nail varnish remover would be better.

When I was younger I was a gymnast (talking 30 years ago now) we used to put meths on our hands at night to harden them up and to deal with blisters from the bars. God knows why we didn't use surgical spirit.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 28/02/2020 11:29

I must admit I was much more aware whilst shopping in my local supermarket this morning.
Saw quite a few people coughing, to be fair they were coughing into their hands but of course were then putting their hand straight back onto the trolley handle.

Scotmummy1216 · 28/02/2020 11:31

Handwashing much more effective that and use of tissues or sneezing into elbow instead of hands if you don't have any on hand. Catch it, bin it, kill it....

HairyFloppins · 28/02/2020 11:31

I get mine from Superdrugs. Just had a delivery of four large bottles. Primark have some 80p ones by the till 75% ethanol.

My dd works in Home Bargains they had a delivery of hand gels the other day but they were going fast.

DoubleTweenQueen · 28/02/2020 11:33

Can you get ethanol-based nail-varnish remover? Isn’t it usually acetone? (I don’t use it much - bit out of touch)

enjoyingSun · 28/02/2020 11:38

I got this - as washing hands at school can be an issue -obvioulsy at home soap and water washing is easier.

They also have purel - another alcohol based brand.

They all seem to be in stock - and many on-line sites are selling them.

None sure of % though it does state

In NHS Supply Chain Bactericidal (inc. Tb), fungicidal & vircucidal (inc. lipophilic and hydrophilic viruses: HBV, HCV, HIV, polio, rota, adeno, vaccinia, herpes simplex, and noro viruses) Norovirus efficacy tested 15 sec. (in accordance with latest test methods (murine norovirus)) Re-fattening agents protect and care for the skin Colour & perfume free Rapid acting and quick drying due to ethanol base The SELS-test (Surface Evaluation of Living Skin) has been carried out for desderman pure Hygienic hand disinfection Surgical hand disinfection

Google shops with it brings up loads - on-line and well known like boots.

Handwashing would be better - it's more an addiional option for in school where they don't always get the chance (kids and I have asthma)- and obvioulsy tissues and throwing them away is better than sneezing and coughing and relying on hand gel.

PlomBear · 28/02/2020 11:38

Antibacterial doesn’t work on viruses. Higher content alcohol might have some effect but unlikely to find these in a high street store.

You do still need to wash hands regularly and gel doesn’t work on visibly soiled hands. Or Norovirus.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 28/02/2020 11:42

Had loads in boots, primark and Sainsbury's local yesterday. I was looking for one that didnt smell like alcohol

AddressLabel · 28/02/2020 11:43

@boredorboard teach the children to cough into their elbow, not perfect, but better than using hands that cannot be cleaned

^^This. I was going to post exactly the same thing!

Lordfrontpaw · 28/02/2020 11:45

I bought a 500ml bottle in Superdrug for £3.27 - saw the same bottle on Amazon for £60 today!

oohnicevase · 28/02/2020 11:45

Take your own !

Tanith · 28/02/2020 11:45

Are they not concerned about the children drinking them?

Mrsjayy · 28/02/2020 11:47

Do you have a flying tiger shop near you they sell it in fancy tins. also try a garden centre i got one of my dc ones that clip on she uses it for work. I think handwashing is preferable schools should be supporting that alternatively could you get them handwipes instead ?
