Mouth ulcer from hell

beckywiththeshithair37 · 28/02/2020 09:01

When I'm sick or run down I tend to get mouth ulcers. They can be quite bad and make me feel generally headachey, tired and unwell. Right now I have two on my lip that have sort of joined together into one mega mouth ulcer. Because it's on the edge of my lip/mouth it is quite visible when I talk and not only is it causing me big discomfort but I'm paranoid about how it looks now too.

Any advice on how make it disappear quickly? Bonjela and the like do very little to help. I've heard dabbing salt directly onto them can help. I even tried a drop of neat gin as I thought the high alcohol content might help. It's only been a few days but it's driving me mad!

I recently had 4 of the buggers on my bottom lip- made me cry. My recommendation is Anbesol it's a local anaesthetic for gums- I find bonjela totally useless... good luck!

I’ve been plagued by mouth ulcers and cold sores since childhood,

Zovirax
Salt water washes
Recent discovery of a very weak solution of hydrogen peroxide ( works fastest for me )

And most recently I’ve taken up using l-lysine capsules from H&B, they’ve worked with wonders and I’ve not had one for ages!

thickwoollytights · 28/02/2020 09:07

I put neat tea tree on mine, even inside my mouth. Most people think I'm crazy - but it heals the ulcers quickly (for me). I'd do a patch test on the inside of your wrist to see if you're allergic to tea tree, if you decide to try it

MrsA2015 · 28/02/2020 09:07

*peroxide only to be applied topically with a cotton bud!

reenon · 28/02/2020 09:12

Oralmedic

Don't watch the YouTube videos...it will put you off using it. Not going to lie, it absolutely fucking kills, like excruciating...when you put it on. But...sweet relief thereafter

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/02/2020 09:14

Iglu

My friend who had terrible chemo ulcers used this, she could barely talk they were so bad but this helped.

MumW · 28/02/2020 09:17

Try tea tree oil. You can apply it neat to the ulcers although it would be advisable to do a test patch first on, say your wrist, must to ensure you don't react adversely. It will sting but I think it is worth it.

You can also use it as a mouthwash/to gargle - one drop in half a glass of water and aggitate to disperse the oil on the surface of the water.

I gargle with it whenever there are bugs going around to reduce the risk of catching them. In your position, I'd probably use it as a mouthwash the minute I started to feel under the weather.

My family hate the taste, but I've got used to it. It's certainly no worse than TCP.

Oblomov20 · 28/02/2020 09:18

Gargling with salt water.

babymidgetgem · 28/02/2020 09:19

Diflam liquid!

Blue5238 · 28/02/2020 09:22

Are you sure they are ulcers and not cold sores? You can get cold sores inside your mouth as well as outside. If so lysine can help them to heal faster, especially if you take it at the very first signs

beckywiththeshithair37 · 28/02/2020 09:23

Am trying salt water as we speak but as the ulcer is on my lip there's not much use gargling with it. Am popping into town later so I'll have a look for some of these items. Where can you usually pick up tea tree?

I found adding a vitamin B supplement and buying SLS free toothpaste stopped them getting bigger and staying longer. I rarely get any now and if I do they are small and they go after a day or two, rather than those monster ones which hang around for weeks.
The sensitive toothpastes like Sensodyne are often SLS free and all Lidl toothpastes are SLS free. It's well worth trying it.

Luckyleprechaun80 · 28/02/2020 09:24

Make sure you’re using an SLS free toothpaste, won’t help with the pain of this one I’m afraid, but might reduce future ulcers.

3rdchristmaslucky · 28/02/2020 09:30

Salt water never works for me cause high salt (and sugar) intake always causes a flare up 😭
Anything that can numb it.

CaptainButtock · 28/02/2020 09:32

Another vote for Oralmedic.
Amazing stuff (have to grit your teeth to get it done though!!)
But then........aaaaaaaaaah the relief.

Puppywithattitude · 28/02/2020 09:36

Stick an indigestion tablet, Rennie or Tums or some such on the ulcer. This has really helped me in the past.

LakieLady · 28/02/2020 09:40

Folic acid, recommended by a dentist friend and works a treat,

I take one a day at the first hint of an ulcer and it seems to nip them in the bud, so to speak.

rachelinindia · 28/02/2020 09:45

They can be linked to vitamin B or iron deficiency - ask your dentist. I got them very badly as a teenager and was referred to have checks for Crohn's (makes sense as your mouth is part of you digestive system) but grew out of them in the end. My dentist prescribed a vitamin and iron supplement and GP prescribed a small tablet - can't remember the name - which you hold onto the ulcer until it dissolves. Both helped.

Iglu is best over the counter medicine for me plus mouth ulcer pastilles during the day. Keep the mouth clean, avoid acidic stuff which hurts, drink using a straw and be gentle when brushing and flossing as I found any time I bumped my mouth I got an ulcer. I hope you find a solution.

xQueenMabx · 28/02/2020 09:45

Chlorhexidine mouthwash. It tastes revolting but I do find it helps. Iglu is better than bonjela but make sure the ulcer is really dry when you put it on.

TheSandgroper · 28/02/2020 09:49

Ice applied directly can help.

Skyejuly · 28/02/2020 09:50

Iglu gel is good.

Difflam spray.

Feeling your pain
Currently have mega cold sores plus one giant ulcer which makes me want to cry

JaxOdin · 28/02/2020 09:50

I suffer with ulcers when I'm run down as well. Anbesol liquid is the only stuff that works for me, it's a bit stingy but stops the pain almost immediately and they clear up much faster. Good luck, ulcers are horrible :(

Alicenwonderland · 28/02/2020 09:54

I wonder if oralmedic is the same as bonjela once? I've used it a couple of times. It's absolute agony for about a minute but it works and bye-bye ulcer!

reenon · 28/02/2020 10:25

@Alicenwonderland I'm not sure...my dentist have it to me.

I'm now seeing consultants for my mouth ulcers , I'm now on a 3 month course of betamethasone steroids which I have to use as a mouthwash. Have to say, not sure it's made much of an improvement, will be interesting to see what my blood results are next week
