Mouth ulcer from hell

beckywiththeshithair37 · 28/02/2020 09:01

When I'm sick or run down I tend to get mouth ulcers. They can be quite bad and make me feel generally headachey, tired and unwell. Right now I have two on my lip that have sort of joined together into one mega mouth ulcer. Because it's on the edge of my lip/mouth it is quite visible when I talk and not only is it causing me big discomfort but I'm paranoid about how it looks now too.

Any advice on how make it disappear quickly? Bonjela and the like do very little to help. I've heard dabbing salt directly onto them can help. I even tried a drop of neat gin as I thought the high alcohol content might help. It's only been a few days but it's driving me mad!

I used to get these as a child. I used hydrogen peroxide, but have a suspicion that it worked on the principle of causing so much instant pain that the nerve ran out of neurotransmitters and had to pause a while to make more. Dentist recommended chlorhexadine mouthwash as a preventative but warned that it could discolour teeth.

TwoleftUggs · 28/02/2020 10:51

Fellow sufferer here too. Bonjela is useless dont bother with that. Ive tried a few things and found Iglü mouth ulcer gel the best. It’s a weird sensation but it works. Make sure you get the one from behind the pharmacy counter and not the one off the shelf.

WTF99 · 28/02/2020 10:54

Definitely Iglu and difflam mouth wash.
I used both for chemo induced mouth ulcers.

yellowallpaper · 28/02/2020 10:59

Kenlog. You have to search the Internet for suppliers. I've had some from America, Australia and India. It's the only thing that works. It contains an anti inflammatory and a paste that sticks to the mucus membrane. I've tried all the above, and this is the only thing that works. Dab a blob on at night and by morning most of the stinging has gone and its starts to heal. Lasts ages, just a pain to get.

Emmelina · 28/02/2020 11:14

Salt. Dampen a cotton bud, dunk it in salt and apply directly.
It stings like an absolute mother* for a couple of seconds, then goes blissfully numb! And because it’s salt and has cleansing/healing properties I find it helps send it on its way quite quickly.

Gingernaut · 28/02/2020 11:16

Anbesol liquid.

Buy it over the counter and apply with cotton buds.

thickwoollytights · 28/02/2020 11:49

Tea tree from Holland and Barret. It's not expensive

Nowayorhighway · 28/02/2020 11:50

My DD gets ulcers quite often, Iglu is great.

beckywiththeshithair37 · 28/02/2020 18:13

Dear god I got some iglu today and it's vile! I mean it has definitely improved the pain so it's worth it just for that. But once it's on it turns into this gluey paste which sort of congealed on my lip Envy I left it for a bit then ended up scraping most of it off which has probably done more harm than good! Its probably best used at bedtime.

Also got some listerine which tends to keep the area clean if nothing else. Ffs am going away with dp this weekend and feel so paranoid about this.

Too late to get the Kenlog, I'm afraid. Tried igluu and it was rubbish. Mouthwashes don't help. You could try a soluble aspirin dissolved against the ulcer. Stings like hell, but might have an anti inflammatory effect.

Growingboys · 28/02/2020 19:48

Wow @yellowallpaper I too love Kenalog and always beg friends to bring it over from Oz but I did not know you could order it online!

I've just ordered two tubes from NZ - thank you for the tip!

It is literally for me the only thing that works on mouth ulcers, and I get them a lot.

Mydogatemypurse · 28/02/2020 19:53

Anbesol

Monmonga · 28/02/2020 20:08

I used to have them in childhood and one day dentist recommended something that worked wonders. It was to use water sanitising tablet (the type you take on holiday if water is not safe to drink), put a quarter of a tablet it one cup of warm water (1 tablet was for a liter of water, so quarter for 250ml), put your toothbrush in it while you shower, approx. 15 min. Then brush your teeth with the disinfected brush and rinse your mouth with the disinfected water (until all is used, do not swallow). This worked an absolute miracle.

This was in a non-English speaking country, so I can't tell the equivalent tablet, but the active ingredient of the one I used is 'chloramine B'.

Catmarni · 28/02/2020 20:13

A few years ago I was at the end of my tether with painful mouth ulcers and went to a gp. She said there wasn't really a treatment but recommended b12 supplements. I've been taking it since and it definitely helps. Also use sensodyne toothpaste.
Anbesol helps with the pain.

Streamside · 28/02/2020 20:45

Pyralvex is a rhubarb extract ulcer treatment, painful but the best I've ever used.

CottonSock · 28/02/2020 20:47

Best thing I've found is called kanka when living overseas. I still buy it now imported via eBay.

student26 · 28/02/2020 20:48

Sounds odd, but when I had an ulcer I used baby teething gel. Absolutely amazing. Tastes ok and numbs very quickly.

Squidgyflump · 28/02/2020 20:55

I feel your pain.

Im constantly battling mouth ulcers and today is no exception. I cant eat, Can barely open my mouth, and have the mother of all headaches.

To boot, I got my period too.

Im sorry, I can't offer any advice. Im just miserable and whiny

WitchDancer · 28/02/2020 20:59

I suffer too when I am run down. I take iron tablets at the first sign and it helps, but also swilling the mouth with warm salt water.

weeklycubrun · 28/02/2020 21:00

To the posters recommending kenalog, the generic name of the drug is adcortyl in orabase paste. It used to be available in the U.K. until 2009, then was discontinued for some bizarre reason. Probably funding. It was the business. Steroid paste that helped to heal the ulcer almost over night, and a sticky paste/plaster that helped to seal the area. Some of the products also contain local
Anaesthetic.
Anyway, I bought this in Hong Kong, Thailand and Singapore, and always beg friends/family to bring it over for me. Honestly amazing.
As a dentist when a patient comes in to see me I obviously can't prescribe adcortyl. I usually try and run tests if source of ulcer not apparent. I usually prescribe a steroid based tablet or mouthwash. It's definitely worth a visit to dentist.
Go to go as well and get checked for vitamin B/folate levels

weeklycubrun · 28/02/2020 21:00

Oops. Adcortyl was trade name in U.K. generic drug is triamcinolone

FluentlyExasperatedMadam · 28/02/2020 21:03

Anbesol is my fav, you can get it in local chemist/pharmacy. I'm epileptic and have seizures a few time a month and I bite the hell out of my tongue and inside my mouth.

Purpletigers · 28/02/2020 21:07

Salt rubbed directly into the ulcer . Rinse mouth and repeat until it goes numb and there’s a red ring around the ulcer . Never fails me . Painful as hell but does get easier the more times you rinse and repeat .

SageRosemary · 28/02/2020 21:09

Just got some pharmacy advice last week for my DD who was suffering from boil/ulcers all over her mouth from new braces. She recommended Medijel which she said was much stronger than Bonjela. My DD has stopped moaning about them anyway so I'm assuming it's effective!

LittleSweet · 28/02/2020 21:26

I had to get antibiotics from the doctor for the really big ones. There were a lot of them. The doctor recoiled when she saw them! I recommend mouthwash. I use corsodil at night and a normal one in the morning for prevention. Any topical gel and a salt mouthwash to treat. I don't recommend igloo. I used it and it stuck to my finger and pulled the ulcer goo off my lip. It hurt so much I cried.
