Optometrist to teacher free childcare

Mouth open moment on BBC news this morning. An optometrist who did not like her job retrains as teacher then moans she cannot work as no free childcare and a teachers salary does not enable her to work.. Well the average salary for optometrist is 50k. She is divorced. She thinks there should be free childcare for her.

Well sorry maybe she did not like the job but should have stuck with it until kids at school then retrained to teach.

So 50/50. Well sorry if you give up a lucrative job to retrain for a job you cannot do because your salary would be halved, then why expect the state to pay for your childcare when the rest of us have to pay for it.

Well there is some free childcare and there are some tax rebates available.

What's news to me is that optometrists area so well paid... Particularly given that I'm assuming it's fairly predictable and standard hourz.

Wow I qonder if I can change from teacher to optometrist.

It woukd get fairlh boring and repetitive in a dark room though.

I think she's got a point, not so much about herself but rather the lack of affordable childcare more generally - it's pretty shit that many people in professional jobs like teaching and nursing can't actually afford to work. We are chronically short of talented teachers and nurses in the UK, we should pay better wages for both.
