Is the amount of rain we've had bothering anyone else?

Thankfully not in a flooded area but we are still getting a ridiculous amount of rainfall.
Our local river is overflowing and has flooded the adjacent banks.
I mean how long will it take to dry the ground out? Is this because of global warming/climate change?
How are the insurance companies even going to be able to make a start on repairs when we're still getting so much rain?

No one remembers that we had minimal rain fall last year, and that our water levels were at their lowest.

midgebabe · 26/02/2020 07:02

I remember,,,extreme events are becoming less extreme and more the new normal unfortunately

Scunnnnnered · 26/02/2020 07:05

It’s not extreme. It was like this a hundred years ago.

happycamper11 · 26/02/2020 07:05

I'm in Scotland- it's getting a bit tedious now but it's just winter for us. There have been plenty worse. Thanks to the hilly landscape and the fact nice flat land in towns tends to be snatched up as rugby pitches it's not a problem for most.

Dragonglass · 26/02/2020 07:07

@Greysparkles It was dry and warm down south today

I'm in the South and it was raining most of the day, with a bitter wind and the odd sunny spell. We had lots of sleet in the evening. Definitely not dry and warm. I am so sick of it now.

SmileyClare · 26/02/2020 07:14

Great- somewhere to moan!
My fairly pleasant walk to work across a field and through some woods has turned into a sort of Bear Ghrylls survival course. Wading through water, slippery mud bogs and negotiating fallen trees. Sad I don't remember a winter as wet as this.

@happinessischocolate, you might be interested in this tweet from the Director of Flood Risk Management at the EA (ultimately, my boss).

And the map that goes with it.

It wasn't like this a hundred years ago. You can look it up: www.metoffice.gov.uk/research/climate/maps-and-data/uk-and-regional-series

Single years vary too much of course but if you take an average over 10 years 100 years ago and 10 years now, you'll see the average has increased.

happinessischocolate · 26/02/2020 07:18

Surely all the flood reports on the news and repeated weather reports saying that a month's rain has fallen in 24 hours can't have escaped your notice?

I don't watch the news or the weather, so yes totally passed me by, if anything important happens I still seem to get to hear about it.

In the news report I was saying about, it stated it was the worst weather they'd ever had etc etc and it was definitely worse effects here than what we have now.

U2HasTheEdge · 26/02/2020 07:20

I would love to emigrate, however that is not possible unfortunately.
Pointless comment.

I am sick of it too. There was a brief spell of sun yesterday and my mood lifted instantly. It lasted for about 10 minutes I think.

Roll on spring and summer. Sick of grey, wet and wind. So boring.

Thenextstorm · 26/02/2020 07:22

Greysparkles It was dry and warm down south today are you in Greece type South as opposed to UK south Hmm

natlove · 26/02/2020 07:22

Me! I am sick of it now. I'm on annual leave with my DD who is 2 and everything is hard work. Any walks, the park, feeding the ducks is out the window. Iv had enough now

SoupDragon · 26/02/2020 07:22

I notice that the "I love winter" posters have been very quiet lately.

I thought exactly the same. I also thought the same in Autumn about the .autumn lovers. It's been mostly miserable since about October. "Crisp mornings" have been largely absent!

megletthesecond · 26/02/2020 07:25

Yes. We're not near rivers or streams but we're fairly low. I'm eyeing up the local paths and fields for standing water.
I was even wondering if I should plant thirsty plants in my garden, except a dry summer would kill them off.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 26/02/2020 07:31

I love winter, but this is not winter, It's a strange cold and rainy season. I have grape hyacinths flowering in my garden.

I'm worried about the flooding, and I'm not looking forward to the inevitably hot hot hot summer.

LakieLady · 26/02/2020 07:33

I caught that few minutes of sunshine in the SE, too, @bumblingbovine49.

Then, 90 minutes later, I came out of my meeting and left the building into torrential rain. It was bitterly cold rain, too, and the wind was biting.

I'm tired of it and would love a few dry days, to be able to walk on the grass without wellies and to line dry some washing. But I'm also very grateful that we haven't been flooded.

Mind you, we're 300 feet above sea level, so if we were flooded, half the south-east would be under water.

Pimmsypimms · 26/02/2020 07:35

I'm sick of it too. I have to travel to the next village several times a day to do the school run and to go to work and the brook on my main route is very prone to flooding. If that road is flooded then I can't get through it and the detour will add an extra 30 minutes to a 10 minute journey.

Ginfordinner · 26/02/2020 07:38

Unless you live in the South East it isn't a given that summer will be hot hot hot. Where I live we had a hot weekend at the end of June, a warm July, a ridiculously hot few days at the end of July and a very hot bank holiday weekend. The rest of the summer was cool, damp and disappointing.

PhoneLock · 26/02/2020 07:39

Just wait until the thermometer tops ten degrees. They'll be back moaning about chub rub and sleepless sweaty nights.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 26/02/2020 07:40

Yep it is really affecting my mood making me feel so gloomy.
It literally rained all day yesterday and some if it was sleety too. My coat and my shoes didnt stand up to the deluge and I got cold and wet.
I am sick of the heavy, grey, oppressive skies. So depressing.

midgebabe · 26/02/2020 07:43

Extreme does not mean the same as unprecedented. means unusual and rarely occurring, not never seen before. As I say extreme is becoming normal

However, I suspect it won't be long before we have unprecedented heatwaves, droughts and floods

Stayawayfromitsmouth · 26/02/2020 07:44

Well at least the reservoirs and aquifers should be full to get us through the summer. We very nearly had a drought last summer. Not forgetting the fires on the yorkshire moors.
I wonder how much of the flooding is from neglect/ mis-management of our landscapes though.

SoupDragon · 26/02/2020 07:45

I love winter, but this is not winter, It's a strange cold and rainy season

Nope. It's definitely winter.

Roll on Summer! I can feel my mood lifting already.

dudsville · 26/02/2020 07:47

What a terrible "winter" here. Never really cold, and rain every damn day. It's like it's just been a very long autumn/spring. I'm desperate for some dry days so i can fling open my windows.
