Zopiclone is the shizz but how do I get rid of the taste?!

My psychiatrist has prescribed me months worth of zopiclone to be taken every other day. I have horrendous nightmares related to my ptsd, and this helps because I'm scared to sleep.

But the taste the day after and just before I fall asleep is disgusting! It's like I've been sucking pennies!!

Ahh some people get it and some don't.
I do! I never found a way to stop it.
Ask your dr for another sleep medicine. There are plenty.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 25/02/2020 22:07

I miss zopiclone havent had it for years but god it was good.

MrsMeg1 · 25/02/2020 22:08

I found taking with really big drink and juice rather than water helped!

EcoAGoGo · 25/02/2020 22:11

Zopiclone is great. I've taken it for 3-4 days a time every year or so to boot my sleep back into a proper routine. Black coffee in the morning gets rid of the taste.

Are you going to take it every night for a month?

You might find you don't need to take it anywhere near that long. Go easy with it because my doctors over the years have said it's addictive if you take it for extended periods of time.

I hope the nightmare go. I've been there with nightmares and being too scared to sleep. It's horrendous. Flowers

Ask if you can change to zopidem. They don't have the nasty aftertaste.

Hannah888 · 25/02/2020 22:36

I agree the taste is revolting. I didn't remember until I read your post that I haven't had it this month. I changed pharmacy and this time was given Zimovane which is identical but another brand. I promise it is identical but no horrible taste.

SingleSidedShoulderShrug · 25/02/2020 22:58

@@EcoAGoGo no he's prescribed me it for a month but I'm only taking it if ive had a particularly shitty day!

Drop the tablet right down the back of your throat rather than putting it on your tongue. Half a tablet (3.75mg rather than 7.5mg) works well for me without the hangover effect. Glad you’ve found something to help.

Gilead · 25/02/2020 23:23

The problem with zolpidem is not the taste on taking it, rather that it leaves a nasty metallic taste the following day.
DS found freshly squeezed orange juice seemed to help.

Gilead · 26/02/2020 02:33

Zopiclone, not zolpidem! Doh!

BitOfFun · 26/02/2020 02:34

Boiled sweets?

Whichoneofyoudidthat · 26/02/2020 02:38

Take a big mouthful of water. Hold it. Tip your head back, and drop the tablet in and swallow making sure it doesn’t touch your tongue (or anything if you can help it) on the way down.

It won’t eliminate the taste thing completely, but will help.

LangSpartacusCleg · 26/02/2020 03:10

Swallow quickly with a large glass of water. Get rid of the morning after taste with a large glass of fruit juice.

And enjoy sleeping!

Taddda · 26/02/2020 03:12

I took 7.5mg Zopiclone daily for months- it is physically and mentally addictive soni would say proceed with caution- I also built up a tolerance so before coming off I was up to 15mg (taking 7.5mg at 10pm, needing another at 2am to get through to 6pm).
Yes they work, but tapering off was really difficult (have a little google about Z drugs), in a similar way to benzo's slowly as you can or it's horrendous-
It's good that your taking them 'as and when' not daily, I was quite ill coming off and personally wouldn't take them again-

Are you receiving any other treatment for your PTSD? Transcendental Meditation, CBT or anything similar? Both were a great help to me (also youtube relaxation/sleep mediations).

Taddda · 26/02/2020 03:15

(Correction on the 2am till 6pm....that should have been 6am! Although sleeping for that long occasionally would have been fantastic! )

user1468348545 · 26/02/2020 06:26

Irn bru helped me! Like other say try to not let it touch your tongue but the irn bru sort of masked the flavour weirdly.

Apirateslifeforme · 26/02/2020 06:33

I dont think anything ever helped me. I just made sure that as DH was awake before me that he would bring up a cup of tea when he had one. It seemed to get rid of the taste first thing in the morning.
I'd always complain to DH that the taste was metallic. So weird.

HelgaHere1 · 26/02/2020 06:54

I have found that eating something with it slows the effect of the pill, eg a bit of banana, or some cereal, if you have it after the pill it washes it down and reduces the bad taste.
Also drop it to the back of your mouth and wash down quickly with ample water.
It seems to lose effect if you take it every night. So maybe 4 nights for me is max. It also affects my memory so not good for taking permanently. I have taken it on and off for years. Would love to give it up but insomnia won't go away.
