Should I cancel my holiday to Tenerife?

chachachaa · 25/02/2020 16:25

Travelling to Tenerife next week with my partner and son. Should I be concerned? Would you cancel? Been doing some research online and I don't think Expedia/airline will refund us or will our travel insurance cover this. What would you do?

Probably wouldn’t go TBH, it’s not a big island.

amaryl · 25/02/2020 16:32

Whereabouts?
Hotel?
Full board?

Meltedwellie · 25/02/2020 16:33

I would just go if it were me but if you’re not going to enjoy your holiday because of it then maybe don’t go.

pallisers · 25/02/2020 16:33

I would. It isn't the risk of catching anything more the risk of being stuck in a hotel under quarantine for a few weeks.

L1appelDuVide · 25/02/2020 16:35

I’m pretty relaxed when it comes to this sort of thing but I’d cancel because I’d be miserable stuck in a hotel under quarantine conditions.

PrayingandHoping · 25/02/2020 16:40

You won't get your money back

I would wait a bit longer and see what happens next before making a decision

mrsbyers · 25/02/2020 16:44

I’m very much at risk from it due to kidney disease and it wouldn’t stop me for a second

chachachaa · 25/02/2020 16:44

@amaryl full board hotel

OP posts:
chachachaa · 25/02/2020 16:45

That's my concern. If we decide to go, I know 100% I'm not gonna enjoy myself knowing what's going on around us and potentially having to be quarantined. Doesn't seem worth it

OP posts:
chachachaa · 25/02/2020 16:46

we also can't afford to loose the money.

Dieu · 25/02/2020 16:47

I wouldn't cancel, no way.

SallyWD · 25/02/2020 16:48

I would follow government advice. It's constantly being updated.

EnglishRain · 25/02/2020 16:49

I don't know whether to go either. We aren't going until a week Saturday. I'm pregnant, so I'm hoping I might have a chance of travel insurance coughing up...

onalongsabbatical · 25/02/2020 16:49

It's all very well saying you can't afford to lose the money, but in fact you've already spent the money. What you mean is you won't be able to afford to replace the holiday. Well a holiday is a luxury. Whereas your health and well-being is fundamental.

lightnesspixie · 25/02/2020 16:50

You won't get refunded and no insurance will not cover it. Unless the FCO issues a travel ban then you're covered

MaryShelley1818 · 25/02/2020 16:50

I wouldn't cancel. I would follow official advice.

ifonly4 · 25/02/2020 16:51

If you're unlikely to get your money back, certainly don't cancel it with the airline/hotel. If it were me, I'd so want to sit on the decision until a couple of days before.

lightnesspixie · 25/02/2020 16:52

We are going to Singapore and Australia in ten days and spent a fortune. I am dreading the spread of this virus like 🙈 having nightmares of spending it quarantined on the other side of the world

MargotB7 · 25/02/2020 16:52

My parents due to go end of this week Sad

LondonMrsA · 25/02/2020 16:55

I would. I wonder if the Insurers will pay out if you do?

SouthernComforts · 25/02/2020 16:55

Hmm tricky one. Personally I could not afford to take 14+ days unpaid after a holiday if I were stuck in quarantine. That would leave me unable to pay my bills next month, so, I'd possibly cancel.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 25/02/2020 17:00

Depends on whether you could spend a possible 2 weeks in quarantine, so really finances, work situation, etc., this could happen anywhere though so I would follow government advice.

Snaga · 25/02/2020 17:07

I'd cancel because my husband is classed as vulnerable to normal flu strains so exposing him to one that doesn't have any anti-virals to help recovery would be foolish at best. We wouldn't be able to replace a holiday of that kind of cost either but him being alive and healthy is more important than a holiday.

Remove my husband from the equation and I'd go if government still gave green light. I'm not remotely bothered about the virus from a personal perspective.

mencken · 25/02/2020 17:09

it is actually quite a big island.

one hotel under quarantine out of dozens. Obviously this does demonstrate how this thing spreads but unless the FCO locks us all down, you'll lose all your money. So that's the choice.

PrayingandHoping · 25/02/2020 17:09

No insurance company will pay out unless the government advise changes to DO NOT travel.

Which is currently isn't and is unlikely to at this point
