Should I cancel my holiday to Tenerife?

Travelling to Tenerife next week with my partner and son. Should I be concerned? Would you cancel? Been doing some research online and I don't think Expedia/airline will refund us or will our travel insurance cover this. What would you do?

Hingeandbracket · 25/02/2020 17:11

we also can't afford to loose[sic] the money.

Well then you have no choice but to go unless and until the government says not to.

Snowdropdelight · 25/02/2020 17:12

I wouldn't go op because its not even the island, but full board, food, the planes, airports are mixing pots

Molly2017 · 25/02/2020 17:16

I wouldn’t go

Gadgnkk · 25/02/2020 17:16

I think I’d be inclined to cancel. Tenerife is a holiday island with attractions that sort of means people go all over the island, regardless of where they’re staying. It is a large canary island but in the greater scheme of things, it’s a small place.

Gadgnkk · 25/02/2020 17:17

The money is lost whether you go or not iyswim

SwearyMcSwearySwear · 25/02/2020 17:17

It’s not the thought of catching owt, it’s the chance of ending up in a quarantine. The U.K. government haven’t exactly been proactive about helping out British people stuck abroad.
The hotel under quarantine is part of a big chain, their staff will move between hotels on the island to cover etc.

BabyWenger · 25/02/2020 17:17

Whereabouts in Tenerife? We've just come back from the north.

RocketFire · 25/02/2020 17:18

what if you cant get back into uk?

HairyFloppins · 25/02/2020 17:18

I wouldn't go anywhere at the moment but that is me.

hadenough · 25/02/2020 17:22

Going to Bali next week via Hong Kong.

I live in Spain and won't be cancelling. If it's going to spread it'll arrive here anyway so I don't think my risk is going to be any higher.

For most people it will be like getting regular flu (which also kills). Hysteria is more likely to damage your health.

Maighdeann · 25/02/2020 17:22

Read Skynews and the interviews of the people stuck in the hotel - personally, I wouldn't go

AlexaShutUp · 25/02/2020 17:25

Sit tight for the moment, OP. You'll lose your money if you cancel anyway, so you might as well wait and see if travel restrictions are imposed. You can still cancel/not go at the last minute if you're worried n

Cuddling57 · 25/02/2020 17:29

At least you have another week to see how the quarantine in this hotel goes. They will be on high alert looking for other cases. Also Italy are now more aware and have quarantined their areas.
Hopefully no more cases arise in Tenerife.

namechangetheworld · 25/02/2020 17:32

I wouldn't go. I wish I could be as blase about the situation as a lot of people on here.

speakout · 25/02/2020 17:37

I agree with SwearyMcSwearySwear

It is not the virus itself that scares me, but the thought of being quarantined in a hotel or when I come back to the UK.

Batshittery · 25/02/2020 17:40

I'm going in about 10 days. I don't plan cancelling. It's here in the UK

VenusOfWillendorf · 25/02/2020 18:14

You are not going to gain anything by cancelling now, so I would wait and see. The situation is changing on a daily basis. As others have said, unless you have underlying health conditions, actually getting it is not really the main concern. I'd be a lot more worried about getting caught up in quarantine or a lock-down situation while away.

However, if the WHO declares this a pandemic - its quite possible they will stop quarantining, as it's unlikely to do any good.

From The Guardian - a pandemic would mean travel bans would no longer be useful or make sense and would alert health authorities that they need to prepare for the next phase. This includes preparing our hospitals for a large influx of patients, stockpiling any antivirals, and advising the public that when the time comes ,they will need to think about things like staying at home if ill, social distancing, avoiding large gatherings etc

I live in Switzerland, and there's been a lot of calls on the government to close the Italian border. There are thousands of cross-border workers who come from the N. Italy into Ticino to work every day. The government have said no, basically because they think it's too late now to be of any use.

maria2bela · 25/02/2020 19:00

The resort that are currently putting guests in quarantine seem to be very unprepared for scenarios like this. The guests aren't being kept up to date with much and locked in their rooms, it's the risk of quarantine that scares me more than the actual virus. I'd probably cancel

WelcomeToShootingStars · 25/02/2020 19:05

I'd still go.

There's cases in the UK and I'm not hysterical about travelling around the UK so I've no reason to be about travelling elsewhere.

Neverenoughcoffee · 25/02/2020 19:11

May be worth checking with travel agent if there's an option to delay or swap to a different location.
It's a personal decision based on your own risk factors. I would go as we could afford to stay longer if we had to.

0hT00dles · 25/02/2020 19:28

Personally, I wouldn't go.

My dp's are cancelling flights to a neighbouring island at the end of next month-as it won't be long until it reaches there. My df has numerous health issues and this would mean he wouldn't make it. Nearly didn't come out of pneumonia last year.

I think reality is starting to hit home now. But I'd wait for the official line to see if you can get money back. The islands aren't big at all in the canaries so likely it will have spread.

Els1e · 25/02/2020 19:31

It’s a difficult decision and until the government give clear guidance, only you can decide what’s best for your family. My mum and sister are booked to fly to Venice next week and are having the same dilemma. Mum, who is in her 80’s, does have underlying medical conditions, so it is quite a risk. Wish the government would be clearer about the risk, not just say you’re probably ok if you are young and healthy and to self isolate. Useless.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 25/02/2020 19:46

We are booked to go to Naples in May - luckily I booked a refundable hotel and the flights were cheap so no great loss if we don't go. But at the moment, I am thinking there is no way we are going if things don't settle.

Spied · 25/02/2020 19:49

I'd not go.

Batshittery · 25/02/2020 20:01

The guests are not being locked in their rooms! One was on the evening news saying that they were confined to the hotel but were free to walk around and use the sun loungers.
