To think there are no destinations possible for our pre-baby holiday?

I'm pregnant and looking to book a babymoon in March as our last holiday as a couple without kids. We really want sunshine and hot / warm weather.

A lot of destinations have malaria or Zika, so are a no-go. We were starting to look at Tenerife as a possibility, (although its less certainty of hot weather) but this week they have had Coronavirus outbreak! (There was also a sandstorm which I presume was a rarity).

Can anyone suggest any other destinations for this trip? Preferably not a very long haul flight. I guess 8 hours from London airports would be tolerable.

I think the reason the virus is spreading so quickly is that people must have their holidays. More people than ever are flying these days that my concern would be the recycled air in the plane.

I tend not to overreact to things like this but TBH I would think twice about flying anywhere right now.

You could always go on a holiday in a floating petri dish cruise Grin

Surfer25 · 26/02/2020 06:19

The ratio of fresh to recycled air in a plane is 50-50 percent, and two things happen with recirculated air: Some air is dumped overboard while the remainder is pumped through HEPA air filters, which remove more than 99 percent of all contaminants, including bacteriologic agents.

Airplanes also use bleed air which is air obtained from the atmosphere via the engines. Yup you're breathing air that has been pulled through a jet engine. Could be contamination from the fuel in the air on the plane.

But planes aren't vacuum sealed using nothing but recycled air.

Dubai is awful, there no history or culture there, it's a soulless monument to capitalism and the epitome of more money than sense 5 stars hotels / service and guaranteed heat OP-
I would!

xmaselves · 26/02/2020 07:31

I definitely would be avoiding aeroplanes altogether if I was pregnant with the current threat of Coronavirus spreading, too much recycled air and no guarantee of the status of anyone else on board.

Mauritius does not have Zika, my SIL had to change her holiday last year from the Maldives to Mauritius as they are TTC.

As a PP suggested, what about Florida or another southern state?

SunnyMumm · 26/02/2020 13:46

I agree with the pp about Dubai. As I've said further up, it would be unacceptable to me based on LGBT rights alone.

Seychelles really is gorgeous OP, we went in April, hot hot hot, but i was never uncomfortable.
La Reunion? near Mauritius, gorgeous island, ideally you'd know some French but not essential

happydays00 · 27/02/2020 19:04

@SunnyMumm frankly it seems it will be impossible to find you a suitable destination. You've dismissed almost every possible suggestion (and there have been a lot!!) I think you may have to compromise on something or admit defeat and stay in the UK.

lostguider · 27/02/2020 19:22

How many weeks will you be when you want to travel? I was 5/6 months pregnant when I went to the Maldives.

LaurieMarlow · 27/02/2020 19:26

can I just reassure you that although your life will change when you become a mother you will still be able to have holidays

They will be very different though in fairness.

What about Malta?

Boshmama · 27/02/2020 19:28

Oman? I went to kefalonia for mine and it was beautiful

PrincessMargaret · 27/02/2020 19:33

No one has babies anywhere in the world apart from UK obviously. Stay home if you're fretting so much. I can't abide it when people ask for advice and then are rude to people giving sensible suggestions.

boniobiscuit · 27/02/2020 19:42

Tel Aviv? Should be in the mid 20's, plenty of beaches and culture plus seems to tick all the rest of your boxes.

Mrsmartinkemp · 27/02/2020 19:43

Majorca is perfect for you!

SachaStark · 27/02/2020 19:44

The Balearic Islands, though I expect you’ll say not hot enough.

EKGEMS · 27/02/2020 22:20

Miami,Florida or the Florida Keys or even Hilton Head Island,South Carolina! No Zika or Corona and no LQBT issues

Pippa12 · 27/02/2020 22:44

Malta is a good suggestion. What are your thoughts on Egypt? Beautiful country with great hotels and predictably warm weather. Reasonable price for a good quality 5*.

How far will you be? I flew to Greece at 20 weeks, I was really very uncomfortable on the flight home.

We’ve done canaries 3 times in the winter months, never been overly lucky seeking the ‘winter sun’ unfortunately.

OP has mentioned zika and malaria, which any pregnant woman would want to avoid if possible anywhere in the world, the former because of birth defect risks and the latter because of miscarriage and death risks. Getting stuck in a hotel for weeks due to coronavirus lockdown doesn't sound like much fun either, which doesn't affect residents. You can grumble that she's being picky with other destinations, but sarcastically suggesting that pregnancy concerns are unreasonable anywhere is very silly.
