To think there are no destinations possible for our pre-baby holiday?

I'm pregnant and looking to book a babymoon in March as our last holiday as a couple without kids. We really want sunshine and hot / warm weather.

A lot of destinations have malaria or Zika, so are a no-go. We were starting to look at Tenerife as a possibility, (although its less certainty of hot weather) but this week they have had Coronavirus outbreak! (There was also a sandstorm which I presume was a rarity).

Can anyone suggest any other destinations for this trip? Preferably not a very long haul flight. I guess 8 hours from London airports would be tolerable.

Babymoon??! Is that a thing? I came on to say Cape Verde. And most of the Canaries don't have Coronavirus.

SoonMummy · 25/02/2020 14:22

@fambae Cape Verde has Zika virus

SallyWD · 25/02/2020 14:22

I'm not particularly paranoid about corona virus but even I'd wait until the very last minute to book. You just don't know where it'll hit next. I hear today that people in UK who've visited places in Northern Italy now have to self isolate for 2 weeks even if they have no symptoms. You don't want to in the situation where you're heavily pregnant and have to self isolate. For those saying Spain and Portugal are very warm in March it's really hit and miss that time of year. My in laws are in Portugal, near Spain and we go every March or April. Sometimes it's 30 degrees but plenty of times it's been about 12 degrees and raining. When it does rain there it seems to go on for days! I'd say Cape Verde, Egypt, Dubai?

missperegrinespeculiar · 25/02/2020 14:26

Oman!

FamBae · 25/02/2020 14:31

@SoonMummy I should have checked, what a shame.

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/02/2020 14:36

Africa doesn’t have Zika and malaria. Some countries in Africa do. South Africa is a great destination but 12 hrs flight.

This. I can't stand when people lump the entirety of an amazing, diverse and enormous continent containing some of the most incredible things on earth into one homogeneous whole.

DazedandConcerned · 25/02/2020 14:39

Hurghada or Sharm in Egypt? Warm, nice beaches and swimming. Places still have a heated pool until April.

I'm back to Sunrise Royal Makadi in May, 7 ala cartes with unlimited visits, gorgeous beach, house reef, safe, sunny, and warm. People will say don't go to Egypt etc... Never had food poisoning, never felt unsafe even in crowded souks in Cairo. No chance of being rained out either.

Littlebluetruck · 25/02/2020 14:41

Cape Verde. Or Dubai.

Ikeasucks · 25/02/2020 14:45

Spain could be pleasant enough - low to mid 20s in March.

slippermaiden · 25/02/2020 14:49

I'd suggest a lovely week in Cornwall or something? Could hire an apartment somewhere like Padstow and eat lovely food and lay on warm sandy beaches getting vitamin d for you lovely baby 🥰

KittenVsBox · 25/02/2020 14:51

Oman, the Emirates.
Not sure how warm Jordan or Lebanon are at that time of the year.

smittenkittennn · 25/02/2020 14:51

Dubai is virtually guaranteed to be ideal weather with no risk of rain. I baby mooned there (I think it was in March too).

CornishPorsche · 25/02/2020 14:53

@slippermaiden there is more likelihood of snow on Cornish beaches in March than sunbathing weather!

CornishPorsche · 25/02/2020 14:55

How pregnant will you be when you want to travel? Have you looked into medical and travel insurance costs? Make sure any policies cover pregnancy and post-natal care just in case as it's often excluded.

yukka · 25/02/2020 14:55

Miami - nice weather at this time of year, plus enough tourist attractions and beach for chilling. Not sure how far along you are but you don't want to be sunbathing in full heat as your body temp will be harder to manage along with dehydration.

Spain, Marbella is current 22 degrees, we're flying next week.

muddypuddles12 · 25/02/2020 14:56

The only place you can really go to that's guaranteed good weather is Dubai or Abu Dhabi

FizzyIce · 25/02/2020 14:57

Agree, Cape Verde seems to tick your boxes

iano · 25/02/2020 14:58

California?
Africa is a huge continent. Not all countries have malaria or zika. Have another look at north Africa.

iano · 25/02/2020 14:59

Ah sorry missed the 8 hour maximum distance thing. Tbh once you've been on a plane that long you might as well add another hour or two..... that might help you find somewhere.

MyDcAreMarvel · 25/02/2020 15:03

Yes Dubai a good option if you really want heat when you are pregnant.

Brefugee · 25/02/2020 15:07

YABU for using the word "babymoon" Grin

MRex · 25/02/2020 15:13

The flights will be the biggest risk for coronavirus. Cornwall or Devon will be lovely and might get sun, last year Southern England got quite warm at the end of March, we had a party that ended up all in the garden. Look for places with stuff to do and nice places to eat, then you won't mind either way. Remember to take your maternity notes wherever you go.

SunnyMumm · 25/02/2020 15:14

@MrsTerryPratchett Thanks, but I am not "lumping" African nations into one homogenous whole in fact. According to the WHO the only African territories which are Malaria-free are Lesotho, Algeria, Mauritius, and the Seychelles. Mauritius has Zika, Lesotho is landlocked, and Algeria is not really my chosen beach holiday destination. Seychelles has been suggested on here as a possibility.

Middle East is really a no-go because of LGBT rights.

I'm not sure I'd trust Cornish weather in March @slippermaiden, as beautiful as Cornwall is, it's not exactly a winter sun destination! :-)

@FizzyIce and @Littlebluetruck a pp has said (and a .gov search confirmed) that Cape Verde has Zika virus. Otherwise it would have been ideal :-(
