To go on holiday next week

I had been planning on booking a last minute trip to Turkey next week. I haven't booked my flights but I know the ones I want to go on/the hotel etc.

My dad has said please don't go. He's worried about there being an issue with coronavirus - more because of the chance of hotels or regions being locked down than me getting it, I should stress. Whilst Turkey has no issue with it, Iran does and Iranians travel to Turkey a lot. Plus this is all moving so fast, things might be different next week.

I am torn because I think the risk of this affecting me in any way is extremely low, this is my only chance of a holiday for months and I have been looking forward to a bit of sun. But I don't want to go if my dad will worry. I'm in my 40s but parents still worry don't they? I feel if I don't go because of this it's a wasted opportunity because coronavirus is going to spread more and the chances of it affecting the tiny hostel I was planning on using are miniscule. He is cancelling a trip to Singapore because of being concerned.

I’d go, I’m off to Spain this week (not Turkey i know).

curlsnotfrizz · 25/02/2020 14:43

I'd go - it's not China or the far East.

DazedandConcerned · 25/02/2020 14:45

I'd go. It could flare up here in that time. I lived through SARS in Toronto working in the medical field, these things can change so quickly.

Enjoy your holiday.

Thank you! I think I'd be advising anyone else to go too.

We've just come back from Florence and Pisa. Just take anti bac wipes and hand sanitizer with you and keep spraying yourself.

SheChoseDown · 25/02/2020 14:57

Don't bother with anti bacteria gel as this is a virus and so will do absolutely nothing to stop it

ParisInTheSpringtime · 25/02/2020 14:58

I’d go. I’m off to Singapore in a few weeks and have no intention of cancelling.

We had a surgery closed near me this morning because a patient has walked in with it (suspected). I'm in Wiltshire. So it could be anywhere.

We flew home from Austria last week, and the gate next to where we were sat was loading a China Airways flight to Taiwan. It did cross my mind that we would be in contact, but equally, it could be anywhere.

The face masks many of the passengers were wearing seemed completely pointless as lots of them were removing them for selfies and chattering happily before putting them back on.

Of course your parents will worry. But what will be will be.

I think your dad is being a bit dramatic. I’m sure you’ll be fine.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 25/02/2020 14:59

Unless in the meantime the government advises against it, I would go.

MaryShelley1818 · 25/02/2020 15:00

I'm going on holiday next week with friends, and then 2 weeks later with DH and DS. No need to cancel unless you're going somewhere high risk.

I thought coronavirus was in the Wirral now, so what use is not going to Turkey going to be? You’re more likely to catch it in Blighty!

BelfastNonBlonde · 25/02/2020 15:02

I’d go - I’m away on holiday at the moment

cptartapp · 25/02/2020 15:02

Just back from Adeje in Tenerife where a hotel is in lockdown. I'd go.

Noooblerooble · 25/02/2020 16:40

I agree he's overdoing it but he isn't concerned about me getting ill - it's the chance that a region or my hotel will go into lockdown and I'll get stuck somewhere. I think we're going to be seeing a lot more of that over the coming weeks, looking at the panic in Italy.
