To think Disney Pixar's new film Onward is going to cause all kinds of problems...

From what I can see the general concept is that 2 brothers get to bring their father back to life for 24 hours to spend one last day together.

Now granted I have not lost a parent but I have taught several children who have gone through this horrid experience. The advice given is always to make it clear that death is final and that the person cannot come back no matter how much the child wishes it.

So surely the plot for this film is at best not well thought out and at worst it could give false hope that seeing their parent again might be a possibility?

Aibu or am I massively over thinking this?

There are only a limited number of plots and stories in the world and people somehow bringing loved ones back from the dead is one of them. (I remember some very dark episodes of Buffy based around this). People have written stories and fables on this theme for millennia. Generally speaking it doesn’t go well and there is a clear moral attached that we should leave the dead alone and honour their memory by living a good life and loving those around us. I have enough faith in the Disney/Pixar story telling tradition to think this film will have a similar narrative arc.

Most powerful, memorable children’s stories have similarly dark themes. Bambi, Dumbo and 101 Dalmations spring to mind. I had to be taken out of the cinema aged 4 because I found the ticking crocodile in Peter Pan so absolutely terrifying. It hasn’t made me frightened of alarm clocks or flying boys dressed in green.

If you are genuinely concerned that this story of elves performing magic will be confusing or distressing to children in your care, the answer is obvious.

YABVU to pass judgement before seeing it.

Lots of people just make up their minds about films or tv shows being 'damaging' or sending the wrong message without even seeing past the trailer, or doing a tiny bit of research. It's really annoying.

Also, the very end of Coco, where (spoilers ahoy!) the little girl/great grandmother comes out of the gate holding her dad's hand and does a little swing/jump? Made me teary, but in a good way.

You can't just shield kids from the knowledge that death happens, talking about it often helps.

@Gemm83 how have you managed to get a copy for home viewing?

Sid in Toy Story is absolutely not abused and neglected.

His sister is totally fine. They have a nice house and lots of toys etc. Get took to Pizza Planet just like Andy

Have you not seen the stately homes thread? Abusive parents can go to restaurants too!
