So I came across the story of Charlotte Nokes who died in prison in the Guardian today and googled further because I had never heard of her before.
The article I have linked gives a better overview of the sentencing policies that lead to her situation.
I like to think I know a wee about about the systems that are in place regarding sentencing etc for potentially dangerous long term offenders but I have been deeply disturbed by what I have read around this case and the experience of others. When I think of cases where people have been released and gone on to commit further devastating crimes, and yet Charlotte Nokes was effectively punished for her ongoing and obviously severe mental health issues beyond the minimum tariff doe the crime she was actually sentenced for, rather than being supported and treated and apparently being a great sounding candidate for rebuilding her life I feel very shocked ......
AIBU unreasonable to feel that this is an issue that really needs addressing?
