What's the most ridiculous of astonishing lie you've ever heard?

Just genuinely interested! Mine is that a colleague of mine told us her dad had died. So good she go home early? Of course we said he's who wouldn't say yes to that.. shame she didn't tell her dad he was meant to be dead or that she'd left early to grieve him as he picked her up as usual. Came in to ask where she was... we were like umm.. she's grieving you ? 😱

A girl I went to school with has recently served a short prison sentence for stalking a couple. It's all very bizarre, but she had also constructed another life through twitter and claimed to be in a relationship with some guy who knew nothing of her. This included taking pictures from his twitter when he'd gone to places like London, going to the places he'd been and posting photos of them both as though they'd been there together and also some dodgy photo shop.

She was always a bit of a story teller at school but this has just been insane!

TheJoxter · 24/02/2020 14:22

Ex would take other people’s stories and retell him about his family (usually an uncle). To the point of retelling my own family story that I’d told him and inserting his uncle into it, to me, and wondering why I didn’t believe him Hmm

He’s still a compulsive liar, claims on social media to have started a very successful business that’s earning him millions (he’s a pot washer in a pub on minimum wage with no qualifications beyond A levels), and has been going to move to London ‘within the next few months’ for about two years now.

Lovebug06 · 24/02/2020 14:28

Had a friend at school as a teenager. Someone was moving house so she claimed to have moved house 112 Times. Since I knew the 3 places she'd lived for years i said so you moved 109 times in a few months? She was adament and apparently knew every place and address and house, amazing mansions all these places were and she remembered every detail even though she would have been a baby!
She also lied about holidays constantly telling everyone of her luxurious weeks away when she was actually camping in the UK. Nobody cared and camping was fine and Even when her sister would mention where they'd been she'd still be adament later. One time I went on my first lovely holiday, she was furious and claimed to have been there 12 times already. Obviously before I knew her, as a baby HmmShe then said she was also on a holiday at the same time and kept on about it. When I got back to school and asked her how it was she was telling all these tales, my friends face a picture as she had been at school the whole time!
She lied about everything. She invented family members, killed off made up nieces and nephews then would forget and talk about them a week later. I was always understanding and tried to be a good friend but she would turn and be quite nasty. If I challenged her she would make out I was the liar and she couldn't believe I was saying these things. Luckily I would tell my mum and dad the things she was saying a lot so I knew I weren't going mad when she denyed them! I kept my distance as an adult but a lot of people know her as a liar now, and she seems to change her whole friendship groups regularly so I'd guess she hasn't changed.

@crispysausagerolls

It’s fascinating comparing the similarities of these people.
My friends mother would also refuse to acknowledge the problem.

There was a time when we were around 16 when her lying was getting seriously bad, it was starting to piss people off and turn them against her, me and another friend were noticing the lying was really starting to cause problems and we tried to talk to her mum and her sister, thinking maybe they would have a word or get her some kind of help for her but they both acted as though we were blowing it way out of proportion, I specifically remember her mum saying “so she tends to exaggerate somewhat, it’s just a sign of a great imagination”
She then accused us of being jealous and bad friends. Confused

We used to have quite a big group of friends who pretty much did everything together but by the end of it most of them couldn’t stand her and refused to talk to her because they were sick of the lying.
The sad part is for most of the time she didn’t seem to notice that most of our group avoided her and wouldn’t speak to her.
By the end of the friendship she had been almost completely excluded from everything by most of the group because everyone didn’t like her.

If you can find a direct relation of your own who is linked to a descendant of the pope or Henry viii etc, then going back 1000 years is not hard work

How are these descendents being found, from 1000 years ago when most folk could not read or write?
We did not start recording marriages, births & deaths until 1837.

hiddenmnetter · 24/02/2020 14:49

I know a guy whose family lived in China for several years (this part was true), however he used to tell the most unbelievable lies about his life there- he knew someone who got their energy from eating lightbulbs, that he got into Cambridge but chose not to go (despite terrible a-levels, on the basis that it's not what you know, it's who you know), he once told a friend that he had contacts in Vietnam and could get a 5-star all expenses paid holiday for around £100. When a friend who didn't realise he was a massive liar asked him to hook him up, he said 'ok' and made a phone call, then 5 minutes later said 'sorry he's in prison for child sex offences'. I mean, it was funny, but blatantly a lie.

sunshineandshowers21 · 24/02/2020 14:51

a girl in my year at school was a compulsive liar. i don’t think she ever spoke one word of truth. her surname was morgan and she was apparently part of the family that owned the morgan fashion company and was super rich. she told everyone she lived in a mansion - she actually lived in a council house in the street behind me. she had cancer about four times. she’d had three miscarriages by 15. her boyfriend was mega rich and had bought her her own private island. we couldn’t see photos of her boyfriend because he did undercover work for the government. her brother died - she didn’t even have a brother! she’d regularly fake seizures and faints. i fell pregnant whilst still at school and when everyone found out she told everyone she was also pregnant - she took photos of my scan that i’d posted on bebo (cringe!!), flipped the image, and pretended it was hers! she carried on the pretence though, and apparently had a stillborn baby the day after i’d had my little boy - despite never having a bump. i haven’t seen or spoken to her in years but i have no doubt she’s still going through life lying.

DobbyLovesSocks · 24/02/2020 14:53

@TheReluctantCountess maybe she meant a hysteroscopy? I had one whilst trying to conceive. If she was younger she may have mis-heard/misunderstood.

My dad was in the RAF and was often sent to a place in Italy to fix aeroplanes. My dad has an accent and I was convinced the place was pronounced a certain way. When someone tried to correct me I was adamant they were wrong

BusterMove · 24/02/2020 15:02

Parish records, mostly. They did keep records of baptisms, church marriages and burials in Parishes before that.

crispysausagerolls · 24/02/2020 15:06

Re the “said they couldn’t have a baby then had one” - tbf to those people, that happens! I’ve had operations and was told I would never conceive and I have a son and another on the way. I would hate for friends of mine to think I had made that horrible time up!

@JollyAndBright

Did she ever lie about you? I found out that her friends who did not know me very well disliked me because she had been using me as an excuse for years eg “I can’t come out tonight crispy is making me do XYZ” and using me as some sort of evil foil so she could play victim with them. Also very upsetting. Those friends never really cared about her either as they all knew about her lies and genuinely didn’t try to help her/just laughed about it but she clearly has/had such huge issues. I wonder if your friend’s mother and mine are part of the reason this has all happened! It’s a great source of sadness to me.

ReplacementPlasticUterus · 24/02/2020 15:08

An ex-colleague of mine who tried to convince us that he had been in the "Special Forces", and was the Army's top champion downhill skier, he'd even been selected for the Olympic team. Given his age, and the number of years he'd worked for our firm, this could not have been in the slightest bit possible, and we all knew it.

It was quite amusing when a few weeks later, he claimed he hadn't been able to make it into the office following some light snow.

JollyAndBright · 24/02/2020 15:24

@crispysausagerolls

It is for me too, I often think about her and feel sad that I no longer have her friendship, despite everything.

She never told malicious lies about me, more like she would incorporate me into a lie, in an attempt to give it some validity I assume.
For instance, she would make up a story about going somewhere and claim I was with her, if I ever found out I would call her out on it but she would always say something along the lines of “oh, was it not with you, I was sure I did it with you, it must have been with [one of her imaginary friends]”

I always thought her mother seemed nice but did let her get away with a lot, her dad died when she was in primary school and I think her mother tended to let her get away with a lot and have whatever she wanted because she wanted to make up for the trauma.

ColourMyDreams · 24/02/2020 16:05

A woman who used to live next door to me told me that she was married to Peter André. She even changed her surname by deed poll to his.
According to her, they went on honeymoon to Africa and whilst there they were attacked by a lion, which he fought off and killed single handed.
Then she was bitten by 24 tarantulas as she slept while a snake tried to strangle her. ( No idea what Peter was doing while all this was going on )
She divorced him when she found out that he was bonking Katie Price and took him for every penny he had.
And her dad taught Brian May to play the guitar.
How I kept a straight face I have no idea 😂

Youvegotafriendinme · 24/02/2020 16:24

DH works with someone, ‘A,’ who regularly ‘faints’ at work so he can go home early. Makes up very tall tales when he fancies a day off and even killed his dad 3 times in about 2 years. Shortly after the 3rd time his dad had died, the dad actually called up to speak to ‘A’ and when colleagued asked who was speaking and was told “ As DDad” the colleague told him he’s meant to be dead and As DDad said “oh not again!” Shock

I worked with a young lad who told the most hilarious lies. How he ever thought they were believable I’ll never know. My favourite one was when his DM was pregnant with him, she went to the doctor as she’d been feeling a bit weak and the doctor did a iron test while there and said her levels were dangerously low, opened a drawer in his desk and pulled out a raw steak and made his DM eat it there and then! Grin

My DSIL is a terrible layer and the things she lies about are just so silly and pointless. We could prove her lies in front of her and she would swear blind it was wrong. Still don’t trust a word that comes out her mouth.

Tara336 · 24/02/2020 16:45

I’ve known a couple people that are terrible liars one of the worst was phoning me at work claiming they had been diagnosed with kidney disease at one of the highest stages, that her brother was a match for transplant but didn’t know and she would be goin* for dialysis immediately, this awful lie was kept up for about 3 weeks until she forgot about it. I have since been told that she has told lots of my friends that I was being emotionally and physically abused by my Exh! Honestly I could write a book on her tall tales. I also worked with a guy who claimed he flew to LA for the weekend to meet a girlfriend and she had come home with him but had to immediately as his mum didn’t like her

FairyJuice · 24/02/2020 16:46

I remember a girl joined our school temporarily while she was in foster care and she used to tell the most ridiculous lies. Once in science class there was a black and white photo in our book of a baby with an extremely rare medical condition and she tried to convince us that she was the baby in the photo, even though the book had been in print for longer than she had been alive Hmm It was sad really, and some of the stuff she told us was harrowing but we never knew what we could believe from her. She was only in our school for a few weeks and I still remember her now.

SisterAgatha · 24/02/2020 16:55

messolini9 Because recognised historians have found them before, there are records in history books and via the inheritance of large estates, mansions, titles etc so you can be sure the information is correct, and typically rich people would have had documents kept for their lineage and inheritance.

Poor families didn’t have that which is why normal people without a famous, royal or rich descendant can only go back so far.

SisterAgatha · 24/02/2020 17:00

Just as an example of course marriages from before 1837 are known. Danny Dyer is linked to Thomas Becket who is sufficiently wealthy and famous to have had his lineage noted. How do you think Who do you think you are is conducted if we can only go back to 1837.

Marriages and births were recorded by churches long before that, you just need to search the parish records and not the GRO centralised ones.

readingreadingreading · 24/02/2020 17:01

Had a uni friend who came from a strict muslim family - so she didn't drink. She would drink orange juice at all parties, generally bringing her own. But she happened to be be allergic to something in the orange juice, causing hyper symptoms that were very similar to drunkeness.

For some reason we actually believed this until someone saw her adding vodka to her drink.

To be fair I think this was aimed at deceiving her family and ensuring she was never seen in a photo or anything with a drink in hand.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/02/2020 17:52

isnt there a medical condition where you can become drunk from fruit juice? Or am.i imagining that?

SnickettyLemon · 24/02/2020 17:57

In my late teen /early 20's I had a friend (friend A) who was a compulsive liar. When one of our mates got appendicitis friend A claimed she had her appendix out a few years previously. None of our friendship group could recall this, so friend A said we must all have been on holiday when it happened. At that stage we had only ever had one girly holiday together and friend A had been on that holiday. A year later friend A really went into hospital to have her appendix out, apparently doctors from far and wide came to study her as she was the only recorded case of someone with 2 appendix. A few years later there had been a bad car crash in out town. A few days later friend A told me how she had personally pulled the victims from the wreckage. I questioned her about this as the two of us had been out together that night, she tried to convince me I had got my days wrong. Later that evening she started to tell other friends about her heroic feat and when they said I thought you were out with Lemon that night , friend A said that I had helped in the rescue, but I was either in denial or too modest to talk about it.
However the biggest lie I was told was by the nuns and others at my strict Catholic primary school. We weren't just told that you shouldn't have children until you were married, but that it was physically impossible to have them unless you were married. When my cousin got pregnant at 20 out of wedlock and I told the teachers ,(thinking my cousin must be very special!) I was told that I disgusting for spreading such filthy lies. One of the reasons I am now lapsed!

Lincolnfield · 24/02/2020 18:11

Must fess up! When I was about ten, I told a girl at school that I had a pony (I didn’t) and would sell it to her for £5.

Late one evening her parents arrived at our house to buy the pony!

My mum was furious. I was in so much trouble - but she did say ages afterwards that she couldn’t understand intelligent people thinking they could buy a pony for £5 - particularly as we lived on a Council estate.😂😂

FeegleFion · 24/02/2020 18:11

A very dear friend of mine travelled from Florida to Sussex last summer (she was invited) to meet up with a chap she’d been getting to know online.

My lovely friend arrived in the UK and he was a no show. She found a cheap air b&b and proceeded to attempt to make contact (ringing him, texting him) and he made excuses about how he was super busy and would definitely meet up before she returned to Florida.

Friend was understandably bemused. Then a ‘friend’ of the chap called my friend to pass on the tragic news that the man in question had taken his own life.

Friend was obviously shocked to the core and grieved for this man.

She returned to Florida and slowly started to get herself together, when who pops up to her on a forum site we use? No prizes I’m afraid.

Oh it doesn’t even end there... about 3 months ago my friend got a message from this man’s ‘cousin’ informing her that the man in question had... you guessed it. Taken his own life.

My darling friend and I and a few others who knew the original story were just flabbergasted that he had the temerity to attempt the same lie!

AmberAndAlexsMum · 24/02/2020 18:18

My ex spent nearly six months trying to get me to believe that he was actually an alien from Venus 😁😁. He also used to tell me that he worked for a sultan in Bahrain once.

He was long term unemployed and living with an elderly aunt. 😆😁

Needless to say there were many other lies as well.
