To find this wrong in a young child's book - particularly in a Bookstart book?

'bath' rhymed with 'laugh'.

now i have read through and neither of the words make sense anymore!!!

mummymagic · 05/09/2007 21:22

Hey! this thread is still going

Totally agree with Snowleopard that there are a lot of crappy cheap books with the words randomly added as an afterthought (FWIW I don't think this is one of them actually). But it's usually because they think they have to rhyme so don't make any sense (like Year 2 learning rhymes - i have a cat, he is so fat, he is not a hat).

My current hated book (and yes, I know I bought it ) is one that says 'I got dirty' and (next page) 'I got clean' - eek. Problem is, I go overboard on changing words and making them flow and sing-song and they end up dd's favourites

LL - nice to hear from you - came back to see if this was still going
Glad it's not only me annoyed by the bottle left in the cot illustration!!

whomovedmychocolate · 06/09/2007 17:14

Hey, I just noticed - Bookstart - not Booksstart. So they are calling our kids names are they?

The scheme offers a selection of books, so it should be plural. Either that or put a space in.

Personally I'm more of a libraryslut.

pinkyminky · 06/09/2007 23:30

One of our bookstart books depicts a dog feeling 'barking mad'. Now as far as I'm aware this means he feels he is insane, yet in the context of this book it means he is cross. For me, that is a bit irritating.
Have to say, we really like Peekaboo baby. my Dd received it in her bag. My Ds had Bedtime for Baby in his, by the same author and that was a big hit too.

Twinklemegan · 06/09/2007 23:41

My opinion of the Bookstart "books"? Great chewing material. Thank God we'd already got him some (so rather a waste of taxpayers money all in all).

Twinklemegan · 06/09/2007 23:43

And yes we probably should've given them back come to think of it. But they did save his other books when all he wanted to do was eat them.

Ditto to Aloha. I can't believe this thread got caught up in long and short A's when this is blatantly not the point. Grrr!

There are a lot of dreadful books for small kids out there - a set of 3 my mum bought for DS spring to mind immediately (The Little Helicopter, The Little Fire Engine and The Little Police Car). Not only are they so badly printed that one page is printed twice, but there are typos and hideous syntax errors. Argh. Mind you, DS dad is even more picky than me - I moan about the text, he has managed to teach DS to say when looking at a book 'Look! Badly drawn elephant!' etc.

Though I do recommend for age 2.6 plus a lovely book a friend gave me called The Little Mole Who Knew It Was None Of His Business. It's all about animals pooing on each other's heads. Now can you guess what language it might originally have been written in?

jasper · 06/09/2007 23:56

they don't rhyme

Twinklemegan · 07/09/2007 00:01

Our favourite books here (DS is 13 months) include The Magic Sky (delightful story about polar bears and the Northern Lights), Dear Zoo and picture books full of photos of animals.

MilkMonitor · 07/09/2007 08:38

Is it a crime not to rhyme?

I hate the way children are taught from the off that rhyming is 'important' in poetry and the like. It's daft. It's better for kids to play around with words including rhyming etc instead of having parameters set.

mummymagic · 07/09/2007 08:50

Our BooksTart (love it) is obviously better than yours . We got Lullaby Lion and Happy Baby (a really nice book with lots of pictures of babies). Dd still loves both.

Agree with Milkmonitor - it's about enjoying words and sounds.

laundrylover · 07/09/2007 18:26

Madamez, we love The Little Mole too! The poo descriptions are fantastic.

TBH, I think the Bookstart books are fine and obviously all the people on this thread are very booky so our kids are going to see many different books in their early years. For some parents the Bookstart books might be the only ones to get through the door so as long as the babies like them it's fine by me. Both Peekaboo and Bedtime for Baby were hits with my two even though I object to the bottles etc. - they just like the flaps and pictures.

Flibbertyjibbet · 07/09/2007 18:39

My inlaws from Manchester would find that rhymes perfectly - they don't seem to be able to say 'th'.
My niece and nephew are called samanffa and Maffew and they have baffs and laffs.

madamez · 07/09/2007 20:58

laundrylover - so do you read it aloud complete with, er, actions?

laundrylover · 07/09/2007 22:14

Well actually the book is at my parents at the moment and you've reminded me to get it back - no we don't do actions although DD1 would kindly oblige if asked as she is keen on talking is through her motions!
