AIBU not to see my DP because of Coronavirus?

sensibleoroverthinking · 23/02/2020 15:01

My DP have just got back from a tour of South Korea and Japan. They have asked if they can come round next weekend to see me and DS, aged nearly 1.

I've said no! I want to wait two weeks to make sure they don't have coronavirus. I tried to say it tactfully but I think they might be a bit offended.

AIBU?

Maybe we'll leave it three to four weeks then! I really hope they don't get it as they are both in their early seventies, although both fighting fit (touch wood).

We do video calls fairly regularly already so yep I'll make sure we keep doing those. Maybe a bit more frequently for the next month.

Can you face time?

I know it's not the same but you're showing willing as well as taking precautions?

hoolydooly · 23/02/2020 16:41

It makes no sense that so many people are saying YANBU!
Does no one care what the foreign office say on this? Nothing about self isolation when returning from Japan or South Korea.
They didn't just take a tour of Hubei for heaven's sake!

MiniGuinness · 23/02/2020 16:44

Your DS1 is in the high risk category as his immune system is very immature, so if he were to catch the virus it would affect him much more than a mature healthy adult.
Can you link to research on this? So far everything I have read shows children are less vulnerable to Coronavirus.

TheGirlWithAPrince · 23/02/2020 16:46

Those that say yabu don't realise how much this has got out of control and that people are DYING from it... If your 1 year old caught it then I doubt they would survive through it ( most children who have caught is have passed as well as older people) so no yanbu

Windyone · 23/02/2020 16:48

So are you saying that everyone flying into the UK from affected areas should self-isolate as a matter of course?
Should we be stopping flights from these areas?
Where should my husband go when he returns from his business trip to Japan? Surely by the logic on this thread he can’t come home as there are vulnerable people in the house. Should the government be providing areas for people to self isolate?

TheyDoDoThat · 23/02/2020 16:48

Advice is that there is no need for a person who has returned from one of the named countries to avoid other people unless they start to have some symptoms

But the advice also factors in how to make sure the country keeps ticking over hence why it says keep going to work etc. If this was not factored in the advice would be to self quarantine.

MiniGuinness · 23/02/2020 16:50

most children who have caught is have passed Can you link please. My understanding is that no children under 10 have died (reported 4 days ago) maybe you have a more recent news report?

BunsyGirl · 23/02/2020 16:52

Windyone We’re not allowed to make business trips to Japan or a number of other South East Asian countries at the moment. We’ve been told that, if we do go to these countries, we will have to self isolate for two weeks when we get back. Lots of other companies have given similar instructions to their staff. Does you husband work for a Japanese company?

MsJaneAusten · 23/02/2020 16:52

Your DS1 is in the high risk category as his immune system is very immature, so if he were to catch the virus it would affect him much more than a mature healthy adult

High risk category identified by who? Everything I’ve read places children at lower risk than adults. Please don’t scaremongering unnecessarily.

gamerwidow · 23/02/2020 16:53

Logically there is little to suggest they will be infectious but I think with a 1 year old I’d be illogical too and ask them to wait.

Tulipan · 23/02/2020 17:00

No shit, @TheGirlWithAPrince. I thought they were just a bit ill with it. DYING you say!

It probably is beyond the point of no return if the incubation period really is a month. Which is why I wouldn't bother worrying. Too late

sensibleoroverthinking · 23/02/2020 17:02

I'm not saying everyone should self-isolate. I just don't want to risk my DS catching it from his grandparents. If we can easily avoid that, it seems silly not to.

FCO guidelines do say to avoid all but essential travel to a couple of areas of South Korea (not sure exactly where my parents were) but that advice was last updated yesterday. The situation seems like it's evolving rapidly there today.

I havent seen any reports of children dying? source?

TheGirlWithAPrince · 23/02/2020 17:25

My bad about the previous comment... It is serious but someone else mentioned it to me... Turns out they were talking about how dangerous normal flu is and thought it was about coronavirus - _-

DesLynamsMoustache · 23/02/2020 17:34

From the BBC under 'Who is worst affected'

The old and the sick. The current fatality rate is less than 0.5% for people under the age of 50. But it rises to 8% for people in their 70s and 15% for people over 80. Meanwhile, nearly 11% of people with diseases of the heart died when infected. As did 7% of people with diabetes and 6% of people with long-term lung problems. The average for healthy people is 0.9%.

ineedaholidaynow · 23/02/2020 17:38

I can't imagine it's much fun for 1 year old having Coronavirus whether they have it severely or not. I wouldn't want to be responsible for infecting them.

Sunflower20 · 23/02/2020 17:38

YANBU I think it's totally fair enough. People really shouldn't be travelling around at the moment, especially to Asia. Better to postpone until this virus is under control.

Aridane · 23/02/2020 17:40

It looks like the incubation period is up to a month so I wouldn't bother

Sighs - there is an article - not peer reviewed - which suggests up to 24 days. However, the World Health Organisation believes such cases are ones of re-exposure to Coronavirus

AriadnesFilament · 23/02/2020 17:42

YANBU

Aridane · 23/02/2020 17:42

People really shouldn't be travelling around at the moment, especially to Asia. Better to postpone until this virus is under control

And people shouldn't ever go out in winter given the annual death toll from flu in the UK is higher than the world's total death toll from coronavirus

Aridane · 23/02/2020 17:57

As of today, per WHO, Italy has more confirmed cases than Japan! Let's whatever we do not go to Italy!

Aridane · 23/02/2020 17:58

with Australia having as many as Malaysia

Aridane · 23/02/2020 17:59

and France twice as many confirmed cases as India, Philippines and Cambodia put together

xtinak · 23/02/2020 18:25

I think YANBU but just to reassure you children are the least affected by the virus based on peer reviewed statistics.
