Inspired by the fast forwarding thread! Grin

Judging by the comments there seems most (women?) would find film-watching much more comfortable without the sex scenes. I know I would!

So let’s have a vote.
YANBU = Prefer no sex scenes
YABU= Love them

they are just unnecessary, aren't they?

I disagree about fight scenes, in so many movies they make sense.

CHRISTonAyamaha · 22/02/2020 12:17

I don't like sex scenes, particularly the incredibly elaborate ones. I loved Homeland but the Carrie scenes where she had loooouuuud bonking sessions were just unnecessary. The Wire too had a lot of them that could have been trimmed down.

I think it comes from this old fashioned notion that sex sells, but actually in my opinion I think a lot of people find it off-putting. As part of the story I can see why they'd be included, but I just don't want to see buttocks tensing and untensing, loud shrieking, breasts, and whatnot. It can be tastefully done (pun) without being so in your face/threatening viewers with tinnitus.

Yes - the fight scenes in the Reacher films say a lot about the character.

Fight scenes can reveal a lot about strategy, whether someone has a sense of honour or fair play etc. And there are certainly fight scenes that I can't watch.

MitziK · 22/02/2020 12:23

Most of us here aren't the Target Demographic.

It's all about the men - there's no point to a woman in most movies if you take out the obligatory cowgirl scene, as she's only there as a convenient resting place for the leading man's cock plot point before the 'important' bits.

Which is usually the point at which she gets murdered, kidnapped or the bad guy attacks. Or all three.

HepzibahGreen · 22/02/2020 12:27

Yeah I HATE the fact that as soon as a couple snog for the first time he's up her like a rat up a drainpipe within 30 seconds
Women are not necessarily up for it after a few seconds of kissing! And the woman is always super orgasmic, writhing about in extasy when he's done nothing to warrant it!
Gah. I only like sex scenes if they are funny.

PegLegAntoine · 22/02/2020 12:28

DH really doesn’t like sex scenes at all. He gets annoyed when they are gratuitous

AmelieTaylor · 22/02/2020 12:28

Some are better than others.

What I really hate though, is eith a seen or implied sex scene then when they show them afterwards the actors have underwear on, and not in a steamy way, it’s ridiculous.

janemaster · 22/02/2020 12:28

Also hate the obligatory shower scene with a young woman. Woman goes home. She has to have a shower and the phone has to ring while she is in there so you see her getting out.

ThunderGarlic · 22/02/2020 12:28

I voted YABU but it depends entirely on the plot and the actors.

When it fits into the narrative and the actors are convincing in being attracted to one another, I love the sex scenes in my favourite films. The best ones also show facial expressions of both men and women and capture whispered phrases and natural gestures that make it seem real and interesting, intellectually, emotionally and sexually.

When sex scenes are gratuitous, the camera lingers only on the woman, everyone is fully depilated, pumped full of silicon and making off-putting fake moaning sounds like a porn film, I wince and turn off.

CassandraCross · 22/02/2020 12:29

Imo the most sensual scenes are in the film Witness, all underplayed and no grunting, humping or loud orgasmic noises and yet incredibly sexy. Less is more.

DoTheNextRightThing · 22/02/2020 12:30

YANBU. I'm not prudish, in fact I find Naked Attraction highly entertaining! I think it's just the fact that A) you know it's actors and it's not real sex, that just makes me feel uncomfortable, and B) there's never a good reason for it to be there. Seeing them have sex doesn't further the story in any way. You can know they had sex because they wake up in bed together or whatever without actually seeing the scene. On top of that, it's always the film you choose to watch with family that has the kinkiest sex scene in it 😂

catwithnohat · 22/02/2020 12:35

Really don't see the point of them (unless its part of the plot line) Usually doesn't bring anything to the party.

If I wanted porn I'd look it up on t'internet!

ThunderGarlic · 22/02/2020 12:37

Another vote for the "Don't Look Now" scene with Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie, and some of the Outlander sex scenes. I also particularly recall the sex scenes in Buffy the Vampire Slayer series 6 which ranged in tone from extremely hot to disturbingly horrible but always felt like part of the plot and convincing in illustrating a twisted relationship between two damaged individuals.

More recently, "Call Me By Your Name" did sex well.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/02/2020 12:50

I dislike it when it’s added just for the sake of it. It’s easy enough to let an audience know what’s going to happen without all the grunting and grinding.
I’m now remembering a granny, even ages ago when there was anything remotely hanky-panky-ish on TV: ‘Kissing and slopping!’ or if it was a bit more full on, ‘Smut and filth!’ 😂
Funnily enough she was not at all prudish in RL. Though she did once tell me that she’d stopped ‘walking out with’ some young man, ‘...after he tried to get his hand down my placket fastener!’ 😱

MatildaTheCat · 22/02/2020 12:53

In American productions the woman almost always keeps her bra on which I find amusing.

MotherofDinosaurs · 22/02/2020 12:58

Outlander is terrible for this. Love the characters, love the story, fast forward the ludicrous 10 mins of every single episode we are meant to spend watching them shagging. I just don't get it.

ParsnipToast · 22/02/2020 12:59

As someone else said, it's the shower scenes that piss me off too. So many films and tv with a random, completely unnecessary shower scene thrown in just so they can get a bit of boob and bum in.

BatShite · 22/02/2020 13:07

Not bothered by them tbh, but they do very often seem to be randomly stuck there in an attempt to show an actresses tits. Quite unnecesary, but usual.

Thats one of the things that ut me off the witcher actually. It seemed everytime the actress playing Yennifer had a big scene, she was naked for no reason! As if blokes would not be interested in a film/series if they dn't maage to see tits? Hmm

janemaster · 22/02/2020 13:09

I don't care if an actress keeps her bra on. I would not want to flash my breasts for a gratuitous sex scene.

janemaster · 22/02/2020 13:10

The shower scene in No Offence is brilliant though. Absolutely loved that.

jackparlabane · 22/02/2020 13:15

If it's a typical male-gaze, woman-gets-on-top-so-we-can-see-her-tits, man magically is hidden by a sheet, then I'm not interested. Sex scenes or nudity done well, there's some male eye candy too, then as long as it doesn't come across as superfluous, I'm all for it.

Buffy series six, for example. Hustlers was a recent film where not only does Jennifer Lopez act amazingly, but despite being in a strip club, you got to see both sexy scenes and all the tedium and stress and worries the characters had, at the same time. Female director.

I remember being a teenager and all the girls being obsessed with Kevin Costner films. Not because they were particularly good (in retrospect) , but because you were guaranteed a scene with his arse and often one of him soaking wet, too.

Waterandlemonjuice · 22/02/2020 13:16

Most are gratuitous. They’re even worse when you go back to films made in the 70s, 80s and 90s. It’s pure sexism, make gaze bullshit.

FenellaVelour · 22/02/2020 13:21

I don’t mind them if they’re done well. But I prefer to read erotic fiction. I do find that sexier if written well (not 50 Shades).

If I can watch fighting, murder, war crimes... then why censor sex.

Lilyamna · 22/02/2020 13:45

I’m willing to bet that men like sex scenes more, and that’s why there are so many. Male directors.

OP posts:
Crystal87 · 22/02/2020 13:55

I'm not a huge fan. I find them cringy and unnecessary to the story the majority of the time. A lot of films show boobs or some kind of nudity when it's not central to the story, it's like they just have to get it it in there.
