to think old passports were black, not blue

I have my old passport from the late 80s.

It is definitely black.

Yet the Government keeps talking about the old blue passports

What colour do you think old passports were?

on’t ever remember putting my occupation on my passport

What about distinguishing features?

Very dark blue, I think.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 23/02/2020 22:12

My old black/navy one has distinguishing marks and height.

Nekoness · 23/02/2020 23:03

@drivingtofrance this is so interesting because I 100% see two tones of black in your photo. The passport has a sheen to it whereas the book is a dull matte not reflecting the light but the undertones are still black. No navy warm undertones.

It’s fascinating because we all obviously see colour differently to one another. I know without doubt that my colour perception is what the majority see due to my work, but it’s one of those weird things you just don’t argue about with friends in real life.

Nekoness · 23/02/2020 23:05

Oh and you need to remove the grey carpet from your pic. That tricks your eyes into seeing one object more blue when it’s not.

Deadsouls · 23/02/2020 23:06

Could we not have got the blue passports, (since it seems to matter so much to some), and stayed in the EU?

Yes, we could have and moreover we were going to whether we left the EU or not. The colour was always going to change and Brexit has nothing to do with that but why let the facts get in the way.

Interesting, do you have any links that you can post to support this assertion? Was it some kind of election promise? Or mandate? When was the colour going to change? And when was this legislation bought in?

Not only that, I feel quite strongly that if any of the U.K. governments between 93 and 2016 had introduced residents cards (the kind most EU countries have to evidence that treaty rights are being exercised) we could have avoided the whole Brexit situation.

I have looked all over and I can't find anything. I clearly remember when the announcement was made that the colour was going to change that some civil servants or perhaps MPs said that it had always been the plan, but googling I can't find anything.

Deadsouls · 25/02/2020 14:22

@FlamingoAndJohn

You could well be right. I don't know the truth of it. But the desire for a return to blue passports and the removal of 'The European Union' on the front, has become conflated with Brexit. Maybe it is important to 'some' Leave voters, Priti Patel seems to happy about it, given the way she was talking about the colour change.

Mordred · 25/02/2020 14:25

We could, of course, have had any colour of passport we wanted while being part of the EU.

Still, got to please the Daily Express crowd, no?

PixieRabbit · 25/02/2020 14:37

Here’s my old one, issued in 1988. Next to my black address book, the passport is very dark blue.

This is going to be one of “those” famous internet debates isn’t it?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 25/02/2020 14:45

It’s navy.

I also recall an announcement, made a few years ago before the referendum crap started. Then it went quiet.

BreconBeBuggered · 25/02/2020 15:32

OP, I've been saying it for years. I still have an 80s vintage UK passport, and never ever thought of it as anything but black. In any light. I'd match it with black shoes and handbag and everything.

SoupDragon · 25/02/2020 15:44

Mine from 1984 is definitely black.

SoupDragon · 25/02/2020 15:47

As an aside, I'm delighted so many have kept their old passport(s)!

Mine has a stamped US visa in it, valid multiple entries indefinitely apparently.

SoftBlocks · 25/02/2020 15:48

Very dark blue.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 25/02/2020 16:11

I am always disagreeing with people about blue and black. I say things are navy blue and they insist they are black. I used to think it was just my DP but I have since disagreed with several people about the colour of one of our towels (I say it's blue, they all say black). so I do think people see navy and black in different ways.

AlpineSnow · 25/02/2020 16:32

Same with turquiose and green. I sometimes see turquoise when other people see green

BMW6 · 25/02/2020 16:42

YABU - very dark blue, NOT black!

WhentheDealGoesDown · 25/02/2020 16:51

Very dark navy on our 3 old ones

SwearyMcSwearySwear · 25/02/2020 17:10

Never had one, never saw one. And never intending to get one either.
