I have my old passport from the late 80s.

It is definitely black.

Yet the Government keeps talking about the old blue passports

What colour do you think old passports were?

I said it up thread but I’ll say it again.

There was no designated shade of blue for the passports. They were a lot less sophisticated than modern ones. They were hand written for a start. The depth of the colour just depended on way the ink was mixed that day.
Also, they were always going to change back to blue regardless of Brexit.

Are brexiteers really making a fuss over the colour of their post brexit passport? God help us. Or is that just the Daily Mail whipping up a froth?

What bloody difference does it make what colour the passport is. I'm surprised they don't want it printed with a nice bright union flag in that case, just to let all the foreigners know that they have a special BRITISH passport.

I'm perfectly happy with my burgundy passport thank you.

And yes, the old ones were an extremely dark navy blue.

Ah but you see it was the EU that forced us to have burgundy passports (they didn’t) and now that we have Brexit we can go back to the old blue one (we were always going to change to blue no matter the result) that we used to have when the uk was great and the summers lasted forever and everyone had a job and there were no foreigners and you couldn’t even buy a pint of milk on a Sunday and the food was crap. Froth froth froth.

mrsBtheparker · 23/02/2020 15:14

Dark blue, mine got wet and badly stained my light coloured jacket which is is how I remember.

Of course it doesn't but there is a moaning section that likes to make anti-British comments about it. I recall being in a queue on the Tijuana/USA border, my OH was mocking me for having the new burgundy one, a German in the queue was mocking her OH for the same reason, neither of us liked that, prefering our own.

BackforGood · 23/02/2020 15:22

I'm with you OP. Mine were (are) black.

DGRossetti · 23/02/2020 15:27

Arguing over what colour they may - or may not - have been is a wonderful way to avoid the total cost to the whole nation of getting blue ones.

DGRossetti · 23/02/2020 15:27

avoid discussing ffs.

I'd give up my blue passport for an edit button.

Nekoness · 23/02/2020 16:06

I have an old black UK passport and a navy blue US passport in my hand right now and there is no mistaking the UK black for dark blue when compared to a US dark blue passport

Nekoness · 23/02/2020 16:14

two expired passports. It’s definitely black

PurpleFlower1983 · 23/02/2020 16:16

Very dark blue

DGRossetti · 23/02/2020 16:17

I wonder what it would be in Farrow and Ball ?

bellinisurge · 23/02/2020 16:19

Nope, that's very very very very very dark blue. Father Ted joke may be old and reused but it is still funny (if you are me GrinGrin(

The change in colour has nothing to do with Brexit. The colour of the passport was not changed by the eu and they were going to change (back) to blue anyway.

Nekoness · 23/02/2020 16:29

“I wonder what it would be in Farrow and Ball ?”. 😂 love it!!! So mumsnet.

Alas, we are a Little Greene household, but happy to oblige.

U.K. is Little Greene 119 jet black
US is Little Greene 252 dock blue

The change in colour has nothing to do with Brexit.

I know that.
You know that.

But let's remember, that having blue passports was trumpeted as a "benefit" of Brexit.

Misandei · 23/02/2020 17:26

Mine was hard back black like *Neko's. I think they issued them in both black and navy blue, DM's was navy blue.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 23/02/2020 17:29

Mine from 1986 is definitely navy blue. It's also hand written, which seems like madness now.

drivingtofrance · 23/02/2020 17:41

Blue.

Here is my old passport. Issued in 1987 as a replacement after mine was stolen on a teenage holiday in Lloret de Mar. That was a fun trip trying to find the British Embassy pre- smartphone/google.. :)

I photographed it next to a book with a black cover . It's definitely blue.

DGRossetti · 23/02/2020 17:41

Is it "Smell the glove" black ?

Rainbowunicat · 23/02/2020 17:42

I'm too young to have had a passport that wasn't burgundy. I'm just here for the jokes about priest socks.
Perhaps those of you with black passports are members of the clergy? And the rest of you mere mortals have passports that might look black, but are actually very very very very very very very very very very very dark blue. I think that must be it.

Crymea · 23/02/2020 17:43

I’ve still got my first passport and it’s definitely black.
I’ve just renewed my passport last week and it’s still burgundy but now Great Britain not eu.i expected it to be blue

katy1213 · 23/02/2020 17:45

Very dark blue. Much smarter than beetroot! The one that always puzzles me is when people mention their job and say 'That's what it says on my passport.' No it doesn't ... and it hasn't for decades!

Spacie · 23/02/2020 17:49

I have 4 old passports in my possession issued between 1978 and 1993 and they are all definitely black.

I know what you mean. That bugs the hell out of me. It’s a standard comment used by comedians but I don’t ever remember putting my occupation on my passport.
