to think old passports were black, not blue

I have my old passport from the late 80s.

It is definitely black.

Yet the Government keeps talking about the old blue passports

What colour do you think old passports were?

However, it might be nice to get some stamps in it again - one upside of leaving the EU/EEA I guess!

Most countries don't stamp them any more whether in Europe or not. I have a Russian and North Korean stamp but that's it.

AlpineSnow · 23/02/2020 01:42

Dark navy

StarbucksSmarterSister · 23/02/2020 01:43

I have my old one. It looks black. At best it's an incredibly dark navy.

I'm not colourblind btw

Asimovsfutureishere2020 · 23/02/2020 01:50

But the old ones were bigger, weren't they? Longer with 2 white/cream sections on front.

Been wondering the same OP - I remember my dad's passport being black in the early 80s (travelled a lot for work and used to look at the stamps inside) - definitely not dark blue.

VenusTiger · 23/02/2020 01:53

Yes @Asimovsfutureishere2020 - I recall a white section, for your name I think??

CondorDays · 23/02/2020 01:59

I've got an old one from the 1960's that belonged to a family member which looks black to me. The interesting thing about it is that is for both him and his wife from the days when a wife could travel on a husband's passport. Also, it has information about their height, hair colour and eye colour.

ImOnlyHereForTheCapybaras · 23/02/2020 02:01

very dark blue. can see why you might think they were black.

lostinleaves · 23/02/2020 02:04

My old passport has my eye colour on it, you could also have your children on it. I think that'd be a good idea now,

Time40 · 23/02/2020 02:04

Some of my parents' very old ones are black. My first passport is dark blue. If I put them side by side I can a big difference. (I really ought to get rid of some of this old stuff ... )

Pixxie7 · 23/02/2020 02:06

Definitely dark blue.

testing987654321 · 23/02/2020 02:15

The one I have from the 80s is black. It might technically be an extremely dark blue (still looks black) but if you told anyone to look for the blue passport they would think you were barking.

bellinisurge · 23/02/2020 07:29

I went through at least one. Very very very very dark blue. Old guts like me will be disappointed if it isn't very very very very dark blue. Grin

Spudlet · 23/02/2020 07:33

@bellinisurge They shaft you every time....

BunsyGirl · 23/02/2020 07:38

lostinleaves...where have you visited that hasn’t stamped your passport? Every country that I have visited outside the EU has stamped mine...with the exception of French Polynesia as it is a French overseas territory and so has an EU and non-EU line at passport control.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/02/2020 07:39

They were very dark blue and could have stayed that way. It was the UK government's choice to change the colour not the EU. Several other EU countries have blue passports and I believe Irish ones are green. Making then blue again is just another pointless thing to spend money on.

CaptainMyCaptain · 23/02/2020 07:42

I had a dark blue one from the mid 70s.

bellinisurge · 23/02/2020 07:55

@Spudlet , got to go to Habithat😂😂😂😂

Grandfather’s passport,1932. Dark blue.

notthemum · 23/02/2020 08:24

Mine issued late 90s is a dark burgundy colour. I have never irl seen any that are not.

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 23/02/2020 08:31

I've only ever had a burgundy one but DH travelled to a wedding when he was a baby and his old passport is very dark blue. I think I'd like a dark green one.

ChloeDecker · 23/02/2020 08:36

I have my old hard backed one as a baby from the 1980s and it is definitely black!

ArriettyJones · 23/02/2020 08:39

The passport office itself accepts that some people saw the very dark blue passports as black and include both terms in its description of the old documents.
