Would you cancel surgery?

Supposed to be having day surgery today but have started with an illness the past few days.

Started a while back as per my other thread with a bad throat, yesterday started with a fever and this morning have all the usual cold symptoms and achey muscles, lethargic etc...

My concern is mainly because I can't drink from 11am and I'm constantly guzzling water at the minute to both ease my throat and because I feel dehydrated. I can't take any throat soothing stuff etc... Last time I had this surgery I was waiting around all day until about 5pm before actually going down.

Wyyd? Husband thinks I might be best cancelling and going next week instead but the hospital have said there may be a risk of blood poisoning if I do that although it's small.

I would probably go ahead with the surgery. Especially if you've been waiting for it.

If you are concerned then give them a call straight away.

I think you’re best ringing them and asking them - they may cancel it themselves if you’re ill

Ring the hospital and ask them as they'll have their own guidelines on when they can/can't go ahead. DH had surgery a couple of years ago and was coming down with a cold, the ward said it was fine to still have the surgery so long as he didn't have a cough.

I went for surgery a few weeks ago and was told illness is fine unless it requires antibiotics and then they get a bit wary.

Ask the hospital, they're the experts, not you, DH, nor us!

They normally cancel it if you’ve got an virus due to the anaesthetic. So I’d tell them.

JustWearThePants · 21/02/2020 15:22

They've cancelled it themselves and sent me home as I had a high temperature and cough.
