To feel insulted

I saw my rheumatologist today because of suspected arthritis. I already have a diagnosis of Ehlers Danlos Syndrome.

As I've taken pain killers and anti-inflammatories... my joints aren't swollen so they can't tell. Basically they don't know.
My rheumatoid factor in my blood is borderline, and x-ray didn't pick up much, but they want repeat bloods as they think I have a fatty liver and accused me of drinking excessively (I don't bloody drink at all!)
And they've booked an MRI to see if that picks up anything.

But she asked me repeatedly how much I drink, and asked if I was sure when I said I don't. I can't with the medication I'm on for other stuff anyway, even if I wanted to. But I don't!

And I certainly don't look like a heavy drinker (I know that may get some flack, but my 2 of my uncles are alcoholic and ones partner is too. One uncle and partner are in recovery. The other isn't. You can definitely tell a heavy drinker) I'm 28 and actually don't think I look too bad! (If anyone wants to advance search me there's a thread started by me in style and beauty which has a photo of me)

It was her insistence that I must be drinking that upset me.
I categorically do not. I've seen the problems drinking can cause alone and while on medication. I've seen it almost kill one uncle, and I'm watching another uncle drink his life away.
So AIBU to feel insulted?

I know in the grand scheme of things it's not a big deal, but I'm now dreading my next appointment and feeling like my issues will just be palmed off as being due to alcohol which is fundamentally not true.

Patients lie. Alcoholics lie very well. Dont take it personally

Fellow Ehlers Danlos syndrome sufferer here, also got very bad arthritis in my feet due to Freidberg disease. I don't have rheumatoid arthritis, just bone inflammation in the feet and my bloods come back fairly normal. I have been asked about alcohol intake in the past as I have Gilberts syndrome which throws abnormal liver function tests. It is not that unusual for doctors in probe alcohol intake, given the size of the alcohol problem in the population. I would not feel too insulted as they have to look at a variety of possible causes. Ehlers and Freidberg disease gives me terrible peripheral neuropathy and I have been asked a lot about drinking behaviour (since it causes that condition in some people who have significant alcohol intake).

My 11 year old son has recently been diagnosed with fatty liver disease, even he got asked if he drinks alcohol. I guess it happens and they have to ask. He doesn't so they moved onto other causes. He's now in the middle of tests for metabolic disorders. He needs to cut out sugar and cut down on carbs. I also don't drink alcohol but for some reason, people never believe me when I say that lol.

don'tpet yeah, I get they have to ask. I just didn't appreciate the fact that she disbelieved me when I said I don't drink.
Obviously iwbu, as it seems to be a thing that people lie about.

Ah well. I'm sure we'll figure it out eventually, and I'll just keep telling everyone that I don't bloody drink!

Maybe if you seemed visibly irritated by the question it would cause them to try and dig a bit more? Who knows but as a fellow teetotaller I feel like we get quizzed on Non alcohol consumption from lots of people. It can be very irritating not to mention dull!

Although in a different I had a similar situation when I went to a new doctor , I had a bad cough at the time and I always lose my voice but I had not gone because of the cough I knew that would sort its self out in about a week ( I had waited two weeks for the appointment so did not want to cancel )
I had wrote down what was wrong with me and the medication that I was normally given by my previous GP .

My New doctor asked how much I smoked , I indicated 0
he asked me again so I wrote down none I do not smoke ?
He said If I was going to lie to him he would not treat me
I underlined what I had just wrote and pointed at my illness and the medication I would like , I also wrote that I did not want anything for my cough and showed him a bottle of throat spray I was carrying .

He still insisted that I am lying and I must be a heavy smoker to get such a bad cough. .
I walked out !
