To send child to World Book Day in last years costume?

Last year I spent months and a lot of time and money creating an amazing costume for my son, from one of his favourite books, because he looks a bit like the character. It was bloody brilliant if I say so myself.

This year he has absolutely no idea what he wants to go as and hasn't read much because he refuses to engage with books at the moment, (that's a whole different issue).
But anyway, it's two weeks ago and I have nothing prepared and no inspiration. He hasn't got any suggestions. Would it be wrong to send him in the same costume? It still fits.
I dont want to buy a readymade plastic costume new from the Asda.

And it would be a shame not to wear the last years costume again. And half the kids in his class will just be superheroes anyway. He's 7, in Y2.

AIBU?

I would and am doing this

Knittedfairies · 20/02/2020 16:37

Absolutely use the same costume again!

peanutbuttermarmite · 20/02/2020 16:37

A very good idea

I’m sending DD7 in last years Matilda outfit as it still fits. DD10 is going in her Halloween outfit as the demon dentist; I’ll tone down the make up. I do get a bit fed up spending on outfits for school and always aim to get more than one use out of them. DD’s Roman outfit has been kept for her younger sister to wear.

TippledPink · 20/02/2020 16:39

My DD has worn the same dress for he past 3 years on World Book day.

elliejjtiny · 20/02/2020 16:39

Yanbu. One of my dc's will probably wear his brother's tiger onesie from a few years ago. My 9 year old has written his autobiography and wants to go as himself!

InsideNo · 20/02/2020 16:40

Primary school teacher here. I’ve been Luna Lovegood for the past four years.

onemouseplace · 20/02/2020 16:42

We have recycled the same dinosaur costume in various incarnations for the last 5 years or so. This year I think it can be The Enormous Crocodile for the youngest DC.

RhymingRabbit3 · 20/02/2020 16:55

Definitely do it. Nobody else will notice or care and its not worth the time and effort to make a new costume if he isnt even bothered!

On a related note I was a bit confused yesterday in the "world book day" section in sainsburys that they had costumes for batman, toy story and Disney characters. I mean technically you can probably buy a "book of the film" for toy story and batman is a comic. But it's not really a "world book day" costume is it!

5foot5 · 20/02/2020 17:04

Of course YANBU. A costume that good deserves more than one outing.

Kuponut · 20/02/2020 17:07

I've managed to get two kids' worth of use and various dressing up occasions out of things in the fancy dress box in this house! The dalmatian dance costume did Disney characters, World Book Day, come as an animal day x2 at least.

PureAlchemy · 20/02/2020 17:09

If he’s happy to wear it, I’d absolutely send him in the same outfit again.

My DC’s old school annoyingly had a different theme every year, so we could never get away with that sort of thing.

WhereAreTheAdults · 20/02/2020 17:12

Why are you even asking this question? Of course it is OK.

And (gently meant) no-one will remember what he wore last year. Or care. Or this year.

OhCaptain · 20/02/2020 17:13

I can’t be the only person who wants to know what the costume is!

ChanklyBore · 20/02/2020 17:16

Sure.

Or find one of his friends and swap for their last years costume. Then swap back, if you like, for next year.

bathorshower · 20/02/2020 17:18

Definitely not a problem.

Surely the best way to approach world book day is to look at what costumes you've got, and then work out the book? DD got a cat onesie for Christmas, so she'll be going as a cat, though I'm not sure which one yet. One year she'd had a princess costume (I know), so she went as a princess. Definitely an approach which keeps me sane!

Elouera · 20/02/2020 17:20

Has you asked your son? What does he think? If he is happy to wear it again, then why not?

Elouera · 20/02/2020 17:20

#have you asked

PleasantVille · 20/02/2020 17:25

Why are you even asking this question? Of course it is OK

This with bells on, WBD isn't any kind or real thing you know, newsflash - you actually don't need to join in at all.

Buying unnecessary costumes is a ridiculous waste of money and does nothing to promote reading. All the wasted money would be much better spent on improving literacy standards for struggling pupils.

Say there are 3 million primary school children, even if the parents only spent £2 per child that's £6.000.000 extra that could be spent every year, you can tell I really object to WBD Smile

JRUIN · 20/02/2020 17:47

You'd be crazy not to!

ringletsandtwiglets · 20/02/2020 18:04

At my school, we say children can come dressed as their favourite character, OR bring their favourite book. Free, easy and stress-free for those who don't like/ don't want to get dressed up.

SpeedofaSloth · 20/02/2020 18:08

YANBU.

Kuponut · 20/02/2020 18:09

My kids' infant school get them to just come in in pyjamas with a "bedtime stories" theme. Unfortunately the juniors don't and some parents make it into a ridiculous one-up contest. My mum bought a load of costumes reduced to clear in the aftermath of WBD to stock up the dressing up box so we've got plenty to draw upon (DD2 has an absolutely cute as hell Cat in the Hat outfit)

AngelOfDeathNix · 20/02/2020 18:21

Go for it! The fun of WBD has gone from our house when the school decided to choose the book for each year group and then send home a list of character suggestions for each book.

ADJ1151 · 20/02/2020 18:23

If it still fits - absolutely. I think it’s great to get a second year out of something!

Annoyingly my children’s school don’t realise details about world book day until last minute! Some years they do it, others not. They also change the theme. Last what they had to dress as a word. So we usually get no notice. Really frustrating.
