To send child to World Book Day in last years costume?

Last year I spent months and a lot of time and money creating an amazing costume for my son, from one of his favourite books, because he looks a bit like the character. It was bloody brilliant if I say so myself.

This year he has absolutely no idea what he wants to go as and hasn't read much because he refuses to engage with books at the moment, (that's a whole different issue).
But anyway, it's two weeks ago and I have nothing prepared and no inspiration. He hasn't got any suggestions. Would it be wrong to send him in the same costume? It still fits.
I dont want to buy a readymade plastic costume new from the Asda.

And it would be a shame not to wear the last years costume again. And half the kids in his class will just be superheroes anyway. He's 7, in Y2.

AIBU?

Our school recently had an eco awareness week and have been trumpeting everything they've been doing to look after the planet.
Except they’re still indulging in world book day dressing up, so they don’t really “get it”.
I’m astounded at the number of parents who will buy an outfit just be worn once for this event (ditto children in need, Christmas jumper day, school plays dictating this or that must be worn).
Such a waste. We really need to knock it on the head.

Fairypiggy · 20/02/2020 18:26

I am planning on doing this. Hoping the Harry Potter robes will last a few years!

Danascully2 · 20/02/2020 18:30

I totally look at what we've got in the house and then find a related book. I'm baffled by the number of parents who ask their 5 year old what they want to be and then go out and buy that specific costume to wear once. I appreciate as they get older it's trickier as you can't just stick them in something they're not keen on but still....

Gadgnkk · 20/02/2020 18:33

I sent my ds in the Harry Potter cloak for several years.

ActualHornist · 20/02/2020 18:35

Are you serious. Why on earth would you even give a second thought to this? Of course YANBU. YABU to post about it at all.

Minesril · 20/02/2020 18:36

I found a brilliant fantastic mr fox outfit in an antiques/odds & sods type shop back in January. Just got an email asking that the children wear PJs on WBD Angry

StupidBrexit · 20/02/2020 18:39

Yadnbu. World Book Day has got totally out of hand. I hate the waste it now produces. One use costumes, decorate an egg, make a poster, make a model etc etc. Can we not just read a bloody book?

MadeleineMaxwell · 20/02/2020 18:40

Our school is doing a WBD bring a potato dressed as your favourite character thing this year, which I have to say I think is genius.

Mockersisrightasusual · 20/02/2020 18:42

Keep them at home and say they went as the invisible man.

StupidBrexit · 20/02/2020 18:43

Sorry to be all mealy mouthed and a party pooper, but I think it's an awful waste of food. What's that? About 300 potatoes painted and glued and then chucked away?

MadeleineMaxwell · 20/02/2020 18:50

Well, StupidBrexit, in relative terms I think overall I'm in in favour of wasting a few compostible potatoes that even the least advantaged families in our school are likely to be able to afford and produce so that all kids can join in, rather than the acres of plastic fabric used in various Asdalike costumes worn once and thrown away/charity shopped. But that's just me.

TeaMilkNoSugarThanks · 20/02/2020 18:55

Yes. Just say it's the sequel to last year's.

victoriashleigh · 20/02/2020 18:57

Totally agree! @MissPoldark

I’m a primary teacher and we are actually looking into minimising the amount of days our school dresses up. As well as putting more emphasis on making a costume together, rather than buying supermarket tat. We trialled an after-school workshop with fabrics and paints and materials to decorate old clothes and had such a brilliant turn out.

I also read an article the other day about a school who “dress” a potato for WBD instead. Very cute!

Slugsforsalt · 20/02/2020 19:07

Our school is doing dress up, decorate a potato, make a poster of your favourite book and also pyjamas. Hmm

Nodancingshoes · 20/02/2020 19:12

Of course you should! My child wore a shark onesie for 3 years running - shark in the park!!!

itsgettingweird · 20/02/2020 19:14

I work in a school. I brought a little red riding hood costume from amazon for a tenner.

Purely on the basis I can wear it for a few years in a row and pretty much use accessories to hand to become any female traditional tale character!

This year I'm thinking I could be Gretal! Or probably Cinderella. I could probably become Heidi at some point with it too!

Burplecutter · 20/02/2020 19:51

My dds school have sent a letter out saying there'll be no costumes this year at all. But they will celebrate with activities.
I'm glad because it's another con to make parents spend more money.
Last year they had a PJ's only rule.
But many parents bought new PJ's for it. I know kids use PJ's and costumes again and we are comfortable financially. But it's so nice not to even have to think about it.

hamptonedge · 20/02/2020 19:57

We don't dress up at our school as it does nothing towards encouraging children to read, which is the whole point of WBD🙄

PumpkinP · 20/02/2020 20:08

I don’t even know why this is a question. My son has asked to wear the same costume as last year as he loves the book. Why on earth would it be unreasonable Confused

MockneyReject · 20/02/2020 20:09

We had an email saying they weren't dressing up, due to complaints about the cost, but were doing activities designed to encourage a love of books.
Followed a few days later by another one, saying parents had complained and wanted to do it. So, now it's optional.
Except it isn't, is it?

Snugglemonster84 · 20/02/2020 20:09

I am. I'm sick of paying out for an outfit that's only worn once

PumpkinP · 20/02/2020 20:10

My dcs school does themes which is annoying, last year it was Peter Pan, meaning you can’t just wear costumes you already have though we chose to ignore the theme but every else stuck to it so must have been lots of people going out buying new costumes!

Whoopsies · 20/02/2020 20:11

My ds dressed as a skeleton for Halloween last year, I've convinced him to go as a skeleton from the funnybones books for wbd. Best idea I've had in ages!! Definitely reuse the costume!!

SpeedofaSloth · 20/02/2020 20:12

I really don't like sending the kids to school in pyjamas. I always send then in t shirt and leggings/ joggers instead.

JosefKeller · 20/02/2020 20:18

Why would anyone even care?

If you believe parenting groups and forum, at least half the kids will wear a costume chosen for the look of it, or chosen by a parent, which has absolutely nothing to do with their favourite books anyway. At best some will have seen the movie.

Schools have to try to make it fun because of so many parents who are allergic to books and reading, and the kids are not supported at all.
