To send child to World Book Day in last years costume?

Last year I spent months and a lot of time and money creating an amazing costume for my son, from one of his favourite books, because he looks a bit like the character. It was bloody brilliant if I say so myself.

This year he has absolutely no idea what he wants to go as and hasn't read much because he refuses to engage with books at the moment, (that's a whole different issue).
But anyway, it's two weeks ago and I have nothing prepared and no inspiration. He hasn't got any suggestions. Would it be wrong to send him in the same costume? It still fits.
I dont want to buy a readymade plastic costume new from the Asda.

And it would be a shame not to wear the last years costume again. And half the kids in his class will just be superheroes anyway. He's 7, in Y2.

Its fine so long as he doesn’t mind, but my son would have been embarrassed so I wouldn’t have,

@PumpkinP

TBF with a Peter Pan theme, you could just send DC in wearing pyjamas and say they were one of the Darling children 🤷‍♀️

PumpkinP · 20/02/2020 20:43

We didn’t think of that last year but I just wish they wouldn’t do themes full stop, just unnecessary. this year it’s fairy tales which is a little bit more flexible!

JosefKeller · 20/02/2020 21:30

I agree, I don't understand when theme events need another theme!
Book day surely is enough.

Reminds me of "themed weddings". As if a wedding is not enough by itself.

Buying unnecessary costumes is a ridiculous waste of money and does nothing to promote reading. All the wasted money would be much better spent on improving literacy standards for struggling pupils

Agree. I hate WBD. Love reading but the pressure to get dressed up is silly

Shouldbedoing · 20/02/2020 21:32

If it fitted, yes of course.

Stompythedinosaur · 20/02/2020 21:52

It's fine. I handcrafted a costume for dd1 to be Max from Where the Wild Things Are that I'm reusing, and planning to use for dd2 after that. I took me hours!

It's quite normal to do this in my experience of working in an infant school. Same costumes used over and over, and often for various different 'event' days.

I teach and I wear the same costume for almost all of our dress up days!

autumnboys · 20/02/2020 22:03

Do it! I have recycled many a costume for WBD & all the others.

WellTidy · 20/02/2020 22:04

Ds was Harry Potter three times, I think. And it wasn’t even handmade. I got it from Tesco.

Aragog · 20/02/2020 22:08

^. So, now it's optional.
Except it isn't, is it?
^

Why not?

Completely optional at my school and always has been. We always have some who dress up, some who just bring in a favourite book and some who don't participate at all. Some just come in uniform as normal and some come in their home clothes. So go full on costume. No one bats an eyelid over those who choose not to dress up though.

Throughout the week we do other activities too, and we really highlight reading a lot that week and especially in the day. I mean, we already have a big focus on books and reading anyway but make it even more obvious on that day.

Crunchymum · 20/02/2020 22:12

Mine will go as Muggles (ie non uniform)

We'll participate properly when the school decides to recognise WBD accordingly.... its not about the costume or lining the pockets of the stores who sell the generic costumes

MrHodgeymaheg · 20/02/2020 22:19

Do you really need to ask?

CheshireChat · 20/02/2020 22:25

At DS's school, 99% kids seem to dress up for various events so a kid in uniform would really stand out, though not one in their own clothes.

I asked his teacher if he can be a paw patrol character as that's what he wants to be and we already have it and she was absolutely fine- in fact insisted there's no need to go out and buy stuff. She's lovely in general though.

YouJustDoYou · 20/02/2020 22:26

Mine asks to go in the same batman costume each year.

GeorgiaGirl52 · 20/02/2020 22:45

My mother was a master seamstress and made me many beautiful costumes for Halloween and other events - witch, Pilgrim, tuxedo kitten, scarecrow native American Indian, and others. I saved them and both my daughters wore them and now my one granddaughter wears them.
Re-using a costume makes it special.

SpeedofaSloth · 21/02/2020 09:29

I make my daughter's WBD costumes as I sew for a hobby, I would love for her to reuse one TBH.
