To ask what the obsession is with teeth veneers!

Just that really! So many young people (20's and 30's) these days have either half or full sets of veneers. Yes I know it's good to look after your teeth and have them straight and extra white etc but I don't get that if they're in good condition then what is the need to cover them up with veneers! A woman I know who had lovely teeth before now looks like she has a full set of oversized dentures at aged 34 with her very expensive recent purchase, they actually add years on to her, and her 'own' smaller teeth looked more youthful and natural. To me veneers look artificial and surely they can't do your own teeth any good! My own dentist said it's the most popular question he gets asked. He blames the celebrity world that we now live in with Instagram etc showing everyone with the perfectly straight American smile and people then want that. I think as well when someone just has the top done you can really see the contrast from the bottom ones no matter how good they are. I'm not slating them completely as they do have advantages such as for discoloured or broken teeth etc but everyone is starting to look like Liz Hurley (who has veneers!) with their sparkling 'teeth'!

I agree. I also wonder how people will cope with maintaining and renewing the veneers for the rest of their lives.

Take perfectly healthy teeth, file then down to stumps and glue fake "teeth" back on to cover the stumps. Repeat every ten years. And in the mean time hope to god no decay starts in the stumps because it's almost on impossible to detect until the tooth falls apart and your veneer falls off.

Implant anyone?

Mental thing to do.

No idea why it's become popular. They look about as convincing as fake boobs or lip fillers.

@lilmisstoldyouso that's such a good description, it should put people off getting them! I heard recently that it's a regular thing a lot of people save for these days and even get loans out a bit like a loan you'd get to do up the house! It just sounds like madness to me when they need replacing so often as well! I think your own natural teeth makes you look unique and artificial teeth completely changes a persons face to almost looking like a different person...

When they are done properly and not as an enhancement they look fine and you would never know.
I have the misfortune of having 10 missing second teeth, when the milk teeth fell out there was no replacement and my top 3 front teeth were tiny with huge gaps. I spent the years until I was 30, being soooooo conscious, that I wore false teeth and had massive gaps (the irony is, I have really healthy teeth other than that) Braces were no option, so I put up with it.
Then I found my dentist I still have today, 25 years later, amazing bridework and veneers and my confidence soared overnight. In fact all but one bridge are the original ones, 25 years on. My veneers also the same. But they are so natural, not big or bright white either.

I had to have veneers on my top front 4, because a shitty dentist did fillings badly, that weren't even needed, and cracked and killed the teeth. Dead teeth go grey over time. Got a good dentist that did lovely veneers in keeping with my teeth colour and size.

15 years later, chemo crumbled those 4 teeth from the roots up, so now have implants, again in keeping with the rest of my teeth.

It was painful and took a long time, I wouldn't recommend it unless you have to!

Do you know you’ve read my mind op. I caught a glimpse of a woman in tv this morning I can’t remember her name but she’s filling in for Lorraine. She has got those big white ones they just look like dentures. I don’t understand it.

Butterfly98 · 19/02/2020 20:04

@Lllot5 yes I know what you mean! Those ones cost a lot of money only to make them look like they're wearing oversized, cheap dentures! Have you seen the chef Gino Da Campo's ones? Now they are comical!!
