I've been I'll since the very start of january. I was initially off a few days with a viral infection, came back in & promptly threw up & was then back off for 2 days with a D&V bug. Then immediately got whooping cough (which caused incontinence) and have been I'll with that for 5 weeks - tho didnt miss a day at work. Sunday night, was getting organised for work when got terrible stomach pain and spent all night vomiting & on the toilet. I fell asleep about 8am and was late phoning into work sick. I'm now due back in tomorrow and am genuinely scared I'm going to get sacked! I've just had s horrendous run of illness since new year and I wish it hadn't happened as much as anyone. How should I handle this?

  1. Look up your work's absence management and sickness policy
  2. Speak to your union rep if you have one
  3. Request a letter (will need to be private) from your GP detailing your poor run of health.
  4. Wait for HR and management to raise the issue.
  5. If you are still sick, do not rush back in to the office when you have not recovered. You will just get sick again which looks worse than one longer period of absence.

  1. If you are not already in a union, join one.

You won’t be self certificated for all of that so I wouldn’t panic yet, though I appreciate easier said than done. Go in and then go from there. I’m sorry you’ve had such a rough time, I hope you’re back to full health soon!
