Saw the panorama program about amazon last night and its been on my mind all day.

I noted that the BBC News app on my phone also ran a story about this too - so been reading that in break times.

It actually sounds terrifying. As someone so eloquently put it
"Amazon is first and foremost a Data Mining company,,that also happens to sell items too !!

Some senior bigwig stated that ""we" that's us, fall into three areas Lazy, Greedy and Horny. It transpires we are not customers par se but more commodities to them.

I'm actually in two minds to remove the amazon app from my phone...I just don't trust it.

The BBC reporter asked for a record of his data and was told his computer wasn't sufficient enough to store it !!

I just never realised that amazon knew so much about us.

It's not just Amazon. Google tracks you in exactly the same ways and knows at least as much about you, especially if you use Gmail.

GladAllOver · 19/02/2020 22:22

Facebook and Twitter do exactly the same. They provide you with a free service in exchange for knowing all about you.

Google are open about it, hence why you can report the google ads that are displayed on the right hand side of MN, you are really not interesting enough for amazon to target you with the odd targeted add, people being slavishly apple and thinking they are above it all, even with some form of adblocker is why my industry pays a lot.

I will repeat, MN in general is a case of a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, i will add an emphasis on the little knowledge

Absolutely terrifying stuff those who have mentioned about the useless ads etc need to watch the program. Yes we know our data is mined but does everyone who owns an Alexa know it is listening ALL the time and your conversations are transcribed by workers for Amazon? Does everyone know Amazon own Ring? The fact that Amazon have issued Ring to law enforcement in the USA and UK and that data collects to show registration numbers who comes and goes to your property at all times and it's all logged leading to the Amazon's new effort a patent registration for drones to monitor people's homes for "security". Yes it's all allegedly "opt in" but who monitors this? No good saying the Competition Commission etc that's a small part of the "worldwide" Amazon. If the spying isn't enough to worry people what about the safety aspect? Knowingly selling car seats that have failed safety inspections.....

I could go on Grin

The thing is, Amazon also supplies resources and it's busily putting a lot of resource suppliers out of business, e.g. high street shops. As evidenced here, many people are becoming reliant on them.

There is potential for serious future misuse, especially as certain resources become scarce. We already see "no platforming" and "cancel culture". What if Amazon's data controls your access to resources because of your political views? What if it's food or water?

So, excuse my ignorance
If I were to delete the amazon app and in future log onto their website...would that achieve anything.
Besides amazon my only other app is EBay and WhatsApp

I’d be happy to delete eBay too ...then just log onto their website

I run Ghostery which blocks the trackers and Adblock+ for the ads. I also use a VPN to access the internet.

I don't have a TV, don't have any loyalty cards and use a couple of different debit cards. I also haven't used Amaon for more than free kindle books for a couple of years now

It won't be perfect but I aim to mess with their algorithms as much as I can
