My phone has packed up (an old iphone) and I need a replacement ASAP so posting here for traffic - sorry.

I can get an iphone 8 (refurbished) or a new Huawei P30 lite for the same price.

Has anybody got either of the phones who can say what is good/bad about them please?

Voting if you don't want to type a message!

IABU - Iphone
IANBU - Huawei

The Huawei is excellent

Graphista · 18/02/2020 20:20

Sorry but I love iPhone. I'm on my 3rd, first was a 4s, then an se and now I have a 7.

I use Tesco mobile and I'm only about £25 a month for it inc usage.

PekLafet · 18/02/2020 21:47

iPhone definitely

marashino · 18/02/2020 22:46

I'm less sure about the iphone because how bad the battery has suddenly gone on mine - it's been charged twice today and has drained to flat very quickly despite me always having everything turned off - I don't leave data on or anything else that drains the battery but it's going to be no use like this

I'm wary about getting another iphone, especially second hand because of that.

I’ve got the 8, had it about 18 months and the battery life is fine. I charge mine at night mostly and it’s just running down now.

I think it depends if you actually want a change, as opposed to more of the same. Apple operating systems are pretty much the same in all their devices, maybe with slight tweaks with each new model or update, or the better camera like in the newer ones.

Huawei will be a complete change for you. I couldn’t do it, I’ll forever be Apple loyal now I think!

marashino · 18/02/2020 22:59

I've had it for two years and it's been fine until yesterday. I had android before so I'll get used to it again quite soon if I go for the Huawei. I'm not so bothered about a change I just want a phone that will last more than two years without the battery giving up the ghost - I've never had this with any other phone.

I looked online at several webpages to save the battery use on the iphone and I'd already got their recommendations as my settings before this happened.

I have the p30 pro and love it after being an apple geek for years.

Raindrops17 · 18/02/2020 23:04

You can send your iPhone off for a replacement battery, I'm going to do it with my iPhone 7 and will cost about £40

PelicanPie · 18/02/2020 23:09

I wish I knew about the replacement battery. I’ve just upgraded but my last phone was fine apart from the battery. Where do you send it?

TwinMumSuperHero · 18/02/2020 23:25

I've got a p20 Huawei - absolutely love it. Much better spec than my old Samsung for the same monthly price and no noticeable difference in operating system
So definitely go Huawei vote from me (but I've always hated Apple anyway and never had any of their products)

Elieza · 18/02/2020 23:32

A new iPhone battery may be the way to go? A cheap fix that will get you back on track same day if you go to a local corner shop type place (check reviews online first or go with word of mouth)

shadlo · 18/02/2020 23:38

I've got the huawei p20 pro and absolutely love it, the battery is fantastic and the photos are amazing. I'm due an upgrade in 2 months but seriously thinking about just going sim only as there is absolutely nothing wrong with the phone after almost 2 years

Bawbags · 18/02/2020 23:39

I had my iPhone 8 for two years and its battery is perfect. DD has it now. Now that phone had some serious, serious use. It's never out my hands.

Huawei provide support to the Chinese government in their human rights abuses towards the Uighurs, the largest internment of a minority since WWII, with over 1 million people detained.

I have an iPhone 8. I am sort of wishing I'd got an SE or made the jump and switched to Android.

The whole case is made of glass so after 10 years of smartphone ownership, I now have a cracked phone for the first time - the back is riddled in fractures - I don't find it a wise or user-friendly material choice. The battery is OK but not great. It seemed amazing at first but 18ish months on and it drains faster than my old iPhone 5 did at this age. I use my screen a lot (3 - 8 hours using data for google maps and web browsing mostly) and it rarely makes it through the day without needing a recharge. At 8 hours I wouldn't be so bothered, but 3 hours is too skimpy for me. On the pro-side, it's light and good to hold and the whole Apple experience is still, to my mind, superior to Android. But I am wondering if it's worth the premium.

voiceoverlady · 19/02/2020 08:09

I was also in the quandary OP but HUAWEI don't support gmail/google apps like googlemaps so that was a nono for me as my business email is gmail. I ended up with a Samsung in the end and I'm really happy with my decision.

Raindrops17 · 19/02/2020 09:00

This is details for Apple's battery repairs. Sorry it's £49 for my iPhone 7. £69 for more recent models.

PelicanPie · 19/02/2020 13:31

That’s really helpful, thank you!

I got the Huawei in the end, I read the stuff about human rights and that's important but every company has issues which I don't agree with. It does support google apps now, thankfully.

It's better than the iphone 6 by miles.
