Choosing Milk Formula

Hello everyone,
How did you decide on which brand of milk formula to give your baby?
I’m finding it really hard and cannot decide between Aptamil, SMA or HIPP.

Hipp Organic.

It’s the cheapest Smile

I looked at the list of ingredients I all the formula (I camt remeber what the document is called, sorry) and decided on Aldi Mamia - basically the same as Aptamil save for .1 of one of the ingredients if I remeber correctly. I've heard its actually manufactured in the same factory and its significantly cheaper. Ds was all good on it, we used aptamil premade when needed (ie out and about).

You just need stage 1 - all of these special pro ones are a marketing ploy. It's also worth noting that stage 1 is all baby needs until age 1 when they can switch to cows milk. Formula companies arent allowed to market to under 6 months, so they invented follow on milk.

Another Aldi fan here. Cow and gate changed and the youngest didn't like it. Tried Aldi, it's lush, tastes like cream. Cheapest too. We just buy 4 at a go because if we can't get to Aldi we can't get it.

We settled on Cow and Gate as they were all much of a muchness where cost was concerned, but C&G didn’t cause constipation (SMA) and didn’t seem to go through them like water (Aptamil).

My primary need (after digestibility of course!) was price as I had twins on formula, a tin a day was expensive.

They’re all the same , choose the cheapest ?

Purpletigers · 19/02/2020 13:52

Or taste them all yourself first and choose the one that tastes the best ?

I don't think they are all the same! A good friend was using Cow and Gate and her son had terrible reflux. She swapped to HIPP and his symptoms improved literally over night.

I personally have used Aptamil (DD1) and Aptamil Profutura (DD2) and have had no issues with either.

I've heard really good things about Aldi's own formula - I was too scared to rock the boat as DD has been so good on Aptamil PF - but do wish I'd have started her with this as it's about half the price!

We used C&G for combi feeding as that's the one the hospital started DC1 on and it agreed with him so we stuck with it. From memory its the cheapest of the branded ones that you can buy anywhere (Mamia may well be cheaper but then you'rs stuck going to Aldi). Aptamil and C&G are made by the same people, but Aptamil is more expensive.

We did Aptamil because that’s what the doctors gave my first in hospital. If they give it to the Nhs it’s probably a pretty good marketing tactic. No idea how hospitals choose which formula but I can’t be the only one that just stuck to what I was given.

PrayingandHoping · 19/02/2020 17:57

@Cremebrule only the biggest brands do the ready made little bottles. That's why they end up being the only choices in hospitals
