to think BBC Radio is something that we don't want to lose in this country

You don't need a TV license to listen to it.
It is a source of local news and chat - something that was really useful yesterday with the floods - I was listening to it as they were interviewing local MPs and environment people about the flood updates.
It's also good for discussions on local issues.

The national radios are institutions - Radio 4 covers a wide range of topics and genres. It's got a lot of great comedy on there - but also has science discussion, history, plays, documentaries as well as great news coverage.

The other stations are great for developing talent, bringing awareness of artists.

Maybe there are too many local stations. Maybe not.

But I do think it's under threat and selling of BBC Radio and its local stations would be a loss. It's something that I think is unique in the world (I could be wrong about that - maybe someone can tell me if other countries have something similar to it)

I don’t listen to them anymore. Absolute rubbish now.

People do though:

BBC Local Radio reaches 15.5 per cent of adults in England (6.7 million)
2.3 million people tune into BBC Local Radio, but no other BBC station (34% of listeners)
BBC Local Radio plays an important role in reaching 1.1 million listeners who consume no other radio at all (16% of listeners)
The majority of the audience to BBC Local Radio is over 50, which is the station’s stated target audience
58% of BBC Local Radio listeners are over 55; 47% are C2DE and the male:female split is 51:49

I love Radio 6 - would miss that terribly if it went.

PickAChew · 17/02/2020 15:58

Agree with Foxgloves. Who else would play captain Beefheart in the middle of the afternoon?

Mordred · 17/02/2020 16:22

If 6 Music goes, I'll be gutted. Love it - the best radio station ever.

BarbedBloom · 17/02/2020 16:24

I don't listen to any BBC radio stations at all. I just don't get on with any of the channels

NewnameOldposter · 17/02/2020 16:25

Absolutely love radio 6.

I agree that selling it off would kill it.

I'm not originally from the UK, I think the beeb is indeed a wonderful and unique thing that needs protecting

QuestionableMouse · 17/02/2020 16:25

I can't remember the last time I listened to the radio.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 17/02/2020 16:35

I bloody love radio 4, and listen to a fair bit of radio 2. Is it really, actually at risk though?

TulipCat · 17/02/2020 16:37

I listen to Radio 4 every day. There are some great shows, and I love that my children and I can listen together. I would be so sad if we didn't have it.

FamilyOfAliens · 17/02/2020 16:38

If 6 Music goes, I'll be gutted. Love it - the best radio station ever.

Same. It’s the only antidote to the bilge that comes out of the other music stations.

Backtoreality1 · 17/02/2020 16:41

Love BBC radio2/4/4ex. Listen to them far more than I watch television. Would be devastated if we lost them ;(

TabbyMumz · 17/02/2020 16:41

Never listen to it. Havent done for about 20 years.

TooMinty · 17/02/2020 16:43

I ❤️ 6Music. Last time they threatened to close it I wrote them a very stern email which I am sure convinced them to keep it - nothing to do with David Bowie petitioning them!

Hingeandbracket · 17/02/2020 16:45

I agree about national stations - I would gladly pay a subscription for them too although I don't personally listen to Radio 2or3.
BBC local radio is utter rubbish though and I wouldn't miss it at all (even though I am in the target age range)
Another fan of 6 music here.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 17/02/2020 16:50

I listen to radio 4 most of the day unless I am working. Without it my grasp of current events and general knowledge would be much depleted. Listened to File on 4 yesterday and learned all about the post office's inadequate IT system causing them to fire about 550 post office managers for theft they had not committed. At least 50 got criminal convictions (some were imprisoned). All started about 16 yrs ago and is still being sorted out. This sort of programme is what the BBC do well.

Basecamp65 · 17/02/2020 16:57

I would pay the license fee for 6 music on its own - its amazingly good
I also occasionally listen to radio 4 but the rest of the stations and the entire TV production i never use.

Hingeandbracket · 17/02/2020 17:03

This sort of programme is what the BBC do well.
Whilst I agree, the BBC is way behind on this. Private Eye has been reporting on it (the Horizon scandal at the Post Office) since at least 2014.

Hingeandbracket · 17/02/2020 17:03

On BTW @mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork I get the reference in your name - chiz.

Hingeandbracket · 17/02/2020 17:05

As I posted on another thread - the local radio response when I was stuck in traffic gridlock due to floods last was some bloke playing Elvis records.

iolaus · 17/02/2020 17:06

I don't listen to the BBC radio (oh wait - I think I may have had radio 5 on once during the euros when I was driving during one of the Wales matches)

thegreekgoddessofcheese · 17/02/2020 17:09

I'd pay the license fee to keep Radio 4 and 6music alone. Both are absolutely wonderful examples of the BBC at it's finest. I'm sure others feel the same about Radio 1/2/3 etc.

Francina670 · 17/02/2020 17:10

They can get rid of Radio 1. I don’t think that serves any useful function and post license fee they won’t have to justify it as offering something for everyone. Young people can get their music from Spotify.

PumpkinP · 17/02/2020 17:11

I don’t listen to the radio at all so couldn’t care less.

Iggly · 17/02/2020 17:16

The issue I have isn’t so much changing the license fee arrangement for the BBC.

The issue I have is what this represents.

This government doesn’t like the BBC precisely because it’s getting whispers in its ear from the likes of Murdoch.

It has been lobbied, effectively bribed, to destroy the bbc simply because the media moguls don’t like it.

They want more money from us for a shitter service.

That is the problem I have with this.

The bbc offers fantastic value for money with no fucking adverts or hidden bias.
