to think BBC Radio is something that we don't want to lose in this country

You don't need a TV license to listen to it.
It is a source of local news and chat - something that was really useful yesterday with the floods - I was listening to it as they were interviewing local MPs and environment people about the flood updates.
It's also good for discussions on local issues.

The national radios are institutions - Radio 4 covers a wide range of topics and genres. It's got a lot of great comedy on there - but also has science discussion, history, plays, documentaries as well as great news coverage.

The other stations are great for developing talent, bringing awareness of artists.

Maybe there are too many local stations. Maybe not.

But I do think it's under threat and selling of BBC Radio and its local stations would be a loss. It's something that I think is unique in the world (I could be wrong about that - maybe someone can tell me if other countries have something similar to it)

I would miss radio four massively. It teaches me so much, makes me laugh and opens my mind every day.

It would be an awful loss.

peacebypeace · 17/02/2020 17:17

I would be gutted to lose 5live.

DecomposingRat · 17/02/2020 17:18

Local radio? Mine is BBC Radio Norfolk. Phone ins about gardening and locals bemoaning immigration and basically any change since the 50s is something I can do without.

Avelinebread · 17/02/2020 17:20

I don't listen to Radio 4 anymore since they had guest editors who I despise and don't think are valid people. But I love radio 2 and I love the world service and whatever anyone says about the BBC, when we are all hiding in our cupboards under the stairs waiting for the nuclear strike/earthquake/aliens, we will all be frantically trying the BBC and realising its worth as a reliable source.

chomalungma · 17/02/2020 17:20

I don't listen to Radio 6 but I do listen to Radio 4
Some people don't listen to Radio 4 but they do appreciate local Radio.

I think it's an incredible service - so much out there on the radio. It would be a shame for it to be lost.

That's the thing. Come real crisis, their political leanings and love for activists won't matter because they will still advise us better than the daily bloody mail Grin

TempsPerdu · 17/02/2020 17:29

I listen to 6Music and Radio 4 (though not the Today programme any more). DP loves Radio 3. We’d be devastated to lose any of them - none of the commercial channels come close.

Kittensinmysupper · 17/02/2020 17:30

In the words of some comedy parody that I can't quite remember .. (might be 'not the 9 o'clock news ' but that's showing my age....) I would pay the licence fee OR a subscription for Radio 4. Intelligent, thought provoking , almost EVERY day. I would be bereft without it.

TempsPerdu · 17/02/2020 17:31

And I’d love to know what if anything all those who’d be happy to scrap the BBC are listening to, as I’m obviously missing something!

Timeandtune · 17/02/2020 17:35

I love radio 4 and 3 and 4 extra and the World Service. I have learned so much over the years. Would be lost without them.

Sparklingbrook · 17/02/2020 17:50

I love Radio 1 in the morning, Greg James is great, I don't want to lose him.

SpeedofaSloth · 17/02/2020 17:53

Radio 6 is why I have a DAB radio. I love R4 too. YANBU OP.

tonsattingforbjudes · 17/02/2020 17:58

Radio 3 and 4 are an integral part of every day of my working week and I often listen at weekends too. The depth and breadth of both are fantastic and I'd miss them both hugely.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 17/02/2020 18:01

I listen to Radio 4 everyday and I don't have a licence - so glad you don't need one for radio! I would happily pay for it but I also think not everything has to be weighed up as worthwhile or not according to market forces. We would lose an awful lot if life was all about profit.

Figmentofmyimagination · 17/02/2020 18:08

I’d pay my licence fee just to keep radio 4 going - and not just for me but for all the years when it was my dementia-suffering mum’s constant companion.

I spent my last hour together with her in the care home listening to gardeners question time - a programme she loved and I loathed. Well I was ‘listening’ - and periodically ‘commenting’ on it - she was unconscious I think, although her eyes were open. Maybe she was listening. I’m not sure what leaves you last when you are dying.

Figmentofmyimagination · 17/02/2020 18:12

I could lose BBC television and not be that bothered - but to lose our BBC national radio stations would be a cultural crime.

Giggorata · 17/02/2020 18:18

Agreed, there is nothing to compare to BBC radio... superb, diverse, a cultural icon.

woodhill · 17/02/2020 18:19

I enjoy radio 2 now particularly at the weekends

pontiouspilates · 17/02/2020 18:45

Radio 4 and 6 Music are fantastic and I'd be very sad to see them go. I also quite like a bit of World Service.

MurrayTheMonk · 17/02/2020 19:41

I listen to bbc radio (2, 5, 1 or 4) all day.
I would miss it dreadfully if it were gone.

Having lived abroad I appreciate the excellence of the BBC. We'd be mugs to let it go without a fight.

Gingerkittykat · 17/02/2020 19:48

I love radio Scotland, it has a hugely diverse range of programmes and I listen most day.

I also don't have a TV license since I gave up on live TV a long time ago but would happily subscribe to BBC radio.

PomPomtheGreat · 17/02/2020 23:26

To answer one of the OP's original questions, yes we do have national and local radio here in Australia, on the ABC. I listen all the time, just as I used to listen to Radio 4 when I lived in the UK, although that of course that wasn't local. I didn't really listen to Radio Solent, which was I think my local one, because it never had anything I liked, although I occasionally checked the traffic updates on the way to work.

Here's my local one now. I'd really miss it if it disappeared.

Haphazardhacker · 19/02/2020 23:15

I’d pay the fee just for BBC three counties alone, and for JVS alone too, he is quite literally the creme de la creme of luxury radio personalities. My life would be very poor if we lost three counties

Katinski · 19/02/2020 23:40

Wake up to r4,lights off most nights after Sailing By,4,4extra,r3 and the World Service....what's not to like?

Arseit · 19/02/2020 23:47

@Francina670 - I think you’ll find it’s not just ‘young’ people who listen to Radio 1. So I for one would very much like to keep it, thanks!
