To ask you about fabric?

Posting in aibu for traffic (sorry). Am in India atm and am blown away by all the beautiful fabric here. Would love to buy a bunch and get some lovely workwear made up once I'm home but I'm completely clueless about dressmaking and I think most of the material here is better suited for warm weather wear? If you make your own clothes... what sort of things would you make with silk/satin/brocade and cottons that would be practical for England?

Tops and summer dresses, mainly,or lighter weight bottoms like pyjama trousers or full swishy skirts.
If you don't have a particular pattern in mind I'd usually buy 2 or 3 metres for a top and maybe 4 metres for a dress, to be on the safe side if the fabric is narrow in width say, a metre) or a bit less if the fabric is wider (like 1.5 metres).
