To ask to what extent the Trans issue is age-old, bog-standard sexism re-framed?

I'm not an academic, I can't quote chapter and verse on feminist literature, but too many things about this apparently minor issue that women apparently just need to shut up about and get over don't add up.

Why is this so central that leadership contenders of the main opposition of political parties apparently can't talk about anything else? While we have so many real economic issues in Britain? Why are they so ready to lose voters over it?

Why have trans issues gone straight to the top of political agendas, when gays had to fight so long, Jews had to fight for centuries, women's fights have never stopped?

Why are women being told to lie in court? and "be kind" - in a legal court, designed to assess whether someone has broken the law or not? Really?

Why are the oh-so-overstretched police forces finding so many resources to ring up (Harry Miller) people discussing the issue on Twitter, and even prosecute women over it?

Why are the practical implications that so many complain of uniquely affecting women? Rapists in women's prisons, men in women's shelters, men taking women's prizes in sport and so on? Why the close link with sexuality, when on the surface it's just about identity? Why does a female academic need security while going about her daily job? Why are others being forced out of their jobs?

Women's rights have been on the backfoot for a while, feminism has been blamed for the lack of jobs, the restriction on employment rights, the rising house prices. Women have always been blamed for the existence of children and the absence of fathers. Then this debate suddenly becomes so central, even while we're told that it's a minor problem that doesn't really matter.

So many questions. This article by Julie Bindel has some too blogs.spectator.co.uk/2020/02/feminism-for-men-is-bad-news-for-women/

AIBU to think that this is just another iteration of the age-old war of the sexes, cast in a more subtle form to enable men to push women back out of public domains?
