To be considering ditching cows milk?

I've been hearing so many bad things about it lately and after drinking it, mainly in hot drinks, I'm thinking of giving it up.

Stories of pus in the milk has put me off. Plus the whole way the dairy industry is.

I need to find a decent alternative for coffee though as struggle taking it without milk.

I stopped drinking cows milk about 5 years ago. It's not an issue at all and most coffee shops will now offer alternative milks. You need to be aware of how many products have milk in them ie:crisps.

incognitomum · 16/02/2020 15:35

I've found a dairy nearby who has a vending machine with raw milk. The cows graze in the fields in between milking. I'm going to contact them and ask what happens to their calves.

Beef calves are kept with their mothers for 8- 10 months . They are allowed to stay together but do indeed make a huge fuss when they are eventually separated . A good farmer will do this gently so as not to distress the calves any more than necessary.

Purpletigers · 16/02/2020 16:02

There isn’t any pus in cows’ milk .

cushioncovers · 16/02/2020 16:23

Let us know what they say op.

BillywilliamV · 16/02/2020 16:27

Cows milk is so carefully regulated, checked, Quality assured. We have the highest animal welfare standards in the world, but if you want to waste money... entirely up to you!

BoredOfTheBoard · 16/02/2020 16:33

When I cut out dairy I noticed after a while my joints were not so stiff and sore. Has anyone else had this? Not sure if it is coincidence

LoveMySituation · 16/02/2020 16:40

For anyone uncomfortable with removing calves, there are some that don't

Too expensive for me, but I thought I'd share. Think I saw it on here à while ago

BossAssBitch · 16/02/2020 16:45

My asthma disappeared when I gave up milk.

And pus has been found in milk.. gross.

Oatly Barista, as other have said - best for the environment and v creamy. Oatly also have no affiliation with companies that are involved with animal exploitation unlike many other ‘vegan’ brands.

peeledplumtomatoes · 16/02/2020 16:45

We haven't drunk cows milk for years. We have oat and soya. The thought of drinking cow's milk makes me feel a bit sick and I don't like the taste. Am happy that there are plenty of widely available alternatives.

TooOldForSims · 16/02/2020 17:03

Second of all, in what world does it make sense to consume processed plant water that is fortified with chemicals over just consuming milk from animals?

In what world does it make sense for an adult to continue to consume breast milk?

TooOldForSims · 16/02/2020 17:05

And how well the cows are treated is irrelevant. They are still being artificially impregnated and having their babies taken away. And it is still breast milk of another species meant for baby cows.

motherheroic · 16/02/2020 17:08

At the end of the day cows milk isn't for us. It's supposed to nourish calves until they are over half a ton.

Me? I like plain old soy milk. Versatile and doesn't make anything too sweet or sickly.

ItIsWhatItIsInnit · 16/02/2020 17:28

I gave up most dairy since becoming lactose intolerant - I always hated cheese so that wasn't an issue. Cream and eclairs are my one weakness so I still have those sometimes. I still have greek yogurt as I can digest that fine.

Coconut milk in coffee is lovely, and Almond Breeze is really creamy and quite neutral tasting for tea/cereal.

managedmis · 16/02/2020 17:33

If people are giving up milk, would they give up cheese and yogurt too?

I'm not trying to goad, just wondering from a health /enviro perspective

FET2020 · 16/02/2020 17:48

Milk is a far superior product in terms of nutrition than any pretend milk on offer. It’s just not very fashionable at the moment.

VivaLeBeaver · 16/02/2020 17:57

I like coconut milk, does anyone know how that compares on an environmental front?

InfiniteSheldon · 16/02/2020 18:05

Does that comparison include the food miles? There is a significant carbon footprint from transportation as well as production

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 16/02/2020 18:07

Oatly barrister has rapeseed oil in it. U don't like eating that at all.

Treacletoots · 16/02/2020 18:14

We have oat milk, cashew milk and hazelnut milk, occasionally rice milk. We also have soy and almond Yogurt. I find the cashew and oat the closest to regular milk and hazelnut is delicious on cereal or hot drinks, but the strongest flavour.

Totally agree that drinking a cows milk is just a little bit odd!

My uncle has arthritis which improved massively when he gave up dairy (not just milk).

I haven't drunk milk for years now, I have soya milk made from soya that grows 100 km from where I live (not in the UK). I have got so used to it that it now tastes absolutely delicious, whereas when I first had it I thought it tasted fine, but still preferred milk. Now I think milk on cereal tastes gross.
A positive side effect has been that I have low cholesterol levels, whereas beforehand they were borderline.

Kittywampus · 16/02/2020 20:10

I gave up on cow's milk after I worked out that it was a major cause of the stomach problems I'd been having. I've switched to oat milk and now that I've got used to it I prefer the taste. I'm happy with this from an ethical point of view too: I've been veggie for years and never been entirely comfortable with the dairy industry. I've stopped having cheese and other dairy products too. However I am not always strict about products with small amounts of milk in the ingredients, particularly when eating out or visiting friends, because tiny amounts don't seem to upset my stomach and avoiding them completely would make life very difficult.

MCP86 · 16/02/2020 21:46

For those concerned about the added ingredients in oat milk and may be feeling a tad lazy to make their own...
Oatly organic is the answer!!
Much much better taste than oatly barista (in my opinion)
Oats, water and a pinch of salt are the only ingredients.
