To just admit myself to the emerg room

15 weeks pregnant and been so ill since Tuesday, severe diarrhoea, mixed with constipation, stomach hard to touch and delicate. Anyway went to the docs on Thursday who helped me out a bit with some prescription liquids to help things out but it’s now Saturday and my stomach is playing up yet again. Have eaten little to nothing and the pain has given me sleepless nights.

When I rang my hospital (the Women’s in Liverpool) they said only come into the emerg room if I’m bleeding? But I’m not having that. So I’m wanting to go along and just wait it out there so I can get some sort of reassurance scan and speak to someone. Plus my doctor even said if the pain stays/worsens just go straight there.

So would I be unreasonable to just rock up?

Glad you went OP.
You can’t be sure it is a stomach bug, or even dehydration.
In my first full term pregnancy an episode of general stomach pain, diahorrea and vomiting were the only signs of a placental abruption. I won’t go on about what happened but determining that it could be something pregnancy related is important.
Hope all is well

I hope everything is ok.

Well you’ll know what to do if there is a next time...not ask on here. It amazes me how many woman without any medical qualifications give advice about not going for medical advice. It might be gall stones which is quite different. The GP told the OP to seek more advice if persistent pain. Being pregnant especially for a first baby makes you worry more. Ringing 111 was the right advice from some. To those that don’t know a doctor often phones back. I know because I had this happen followed by an ambulance with two paramedics and a trip to hospital. I wasn’t pregnant.

I hope everything goes well for the rest of your pregnancy.

We phoned 111 the other night for our toddler, were sent straight up to the hospital at 10pm. Seen straightaway, given a prescription for the 24 hour chemist just around the corner, and told to come back if he got any worse as they were there all night.

I couldn't believe how well the system works. There's no way I'd bother A&E.

SnoozyLou · 15/02/2020 16:01

It was the out of hours doc we saw btw.

ohtheholidays · 15/02/2020 16:08

I hope your okay OP and that your getting what ever help is needed Flowers

anothernamejeeves · 15/02/2020 16:09

@Bestoption nope I worked for 111 and have been a qualified nurse for ten years
Get your facts right

Some really spiteful comments on here today aimed at a woman who is not only pregnant but feeling very unwell too. I think some of you have forgotten what a worrying time pregnancy is and how out if control you can feel. Chocchoc88 Hope you feel better soon and are feeling less anxious now you are in safe hands.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 15/02/2020 16:50

I agree that dehydration is the big risk here. I see you went to the hospital and hope you're feeling better, OP.

For the future, I'd stock up on some rehydration liquid or some ice pops (the sort children have when they're ill, they're called Pedialyte here in the U.S.). You can just suck on the ice pops instead of trying to eat and they replace electrolytes.

Good luck! Flowers

I had these symptoms when I was 6mnths pregnant with DS. I had my pain and symptoms dismissed and was sent home from hospital 3 times before I was finally taken seriously and admitted. Even then, I had two weeks of faint disbelief from medical professionals until my bowel perforated and they found I had a total obstruction due to adhesions.

A full laparotomy, a premature birth and months of recovery and more surgery since and I wish I'd been more forceful at the time and not accepted being told I was over-reacting to a stomach bug.

Obviously, that's rare and I'm not saying this to scare anyone - I'm just saying only you know how bad you feel and you can't let others tell you it's nothing - even if they are medically trained. I was in so much pain. I knew things weren't right. No one believed me.

@Chocchoc88 I’d read all your posts when I commented and I’m fully aware of what the womens offer considering I’ve been a patient there far too many times and I’m a HCP as well. I’m glad you’re being seen to but asking for a reassurance scan wound me up. The NHS is on its knees as it is without scanning anyone and everyone on a weekend with D&V!

Mysa74 · 15/02/2020 20:04

I hope every thing is okay op xx

gingersausage · 16/02/2020 16:09

@TatianaLarina and @Bestoption I got a call back from a specialist nurse practitioner. Is that clinical enough for you or would you like to bitch about that too?

TatianaLarina · 16/02/2020 16:21

@gingersausage

Woah - overreaction much. A recent discussion on 111 showed that many posters didn’t know that the bods on the phone lines have no clinical training. There have been various cases in which children have died because the advice given by the agent was not appropriate.

I wanted to clarify that.

Fwiw one of the children who died, the mother had been advised by a nurse from 111. The child actually had intentional obstruction which the nurse missed. Thus phone advice, even from someone with medical training, is not necessarily reliable.

I had this last week it was 5 days before I was anywhere near back to normal. The stomach pain after was a bitch, I was in tears with the pain. With me it was trapped wind and hurt like hell.
What worked for me was a mixture of a warm bath (not too hot for you obviously), warm lemonade, ronnie and slowly increasing the amount I was eating. I am only now after over a week back to normal and have now caught the damn cold going around.
