To just admit myself to the emerg room

Chocchoc88 · 15/02/2020 10:41

15 weeks pregnant and been so ill since Tuesday, severe diarrhoea, mixed with constipation, stomach hard to touch and delicate. Anyway went to the docs on Thursday who helped me out a bit with some prescription liquids to help things out but it’s now Saturday and my stomach is playing up yet again. Have eaten little to nothing and the pain has given me sleepless nights.

When I rang my hospital (the Women’s in Liverpool) they said only come into the emerg room if I’m bleeding? But I’m not having that. So I’m wanting to go along and just wait it out there so I can get some sort of reassurance scan and speak to someone. Plus my doctor even said if the pain stays/worsens just go straight there.

So would I be unreasonable to just rock up?

Hope you feel better soon and everything is ok. Anonymous online forums are not the right place to seek medical advice so you will always get mised advice from posters.

dontgobaconmyheart · 15/02/2020 14:08

You may well be dehydrated OP but surely anyone with D&V knows you should be rehydrating or using rehydration/electrolyte sachets to avoid it, unless there are complex health needs at play then going 'in' to hospital to IV rehydrate is a very short term plan and should be considered carefully if it is potentially contagious d&v. Nothing wrong with seeking help if situations arent manageable, at all, but rehydrating is something that can largely be avoided if you can keep a glass of water down.

111 will pretty much always advice seeing an out of hours doctor, they are not doctors and therefore have to cover their backs. A family member does this job and they simply follow a flow chart, if theres a trigger point hit or more info needed you go to a doctor or nurse for further assessment.

Humphs27 · 15/02/2020 14:15

It could be appendicitis’s, it doesn’t sound like a bug. I would probably go to a general AED rather than the women’s

rainbowcase · 15/02/2020 14:18

Dehydration in pregnancy needs to be assessed by a professional as it can have serious consequences.

Not disagreeing, however OP wants to go and get scanned, not because she was worried about dehydration. Surely being pregnant and having D&V most would take steps to prevent dehydration anyway?

AlexaAmbidextra · 15/02/2020 14:22

You don’t know it’s a bug and neither do all these people diagnosing you over the internet. Call 111 and take their advice. Also, it may be nothing to do with your pregnancy so don’t assume that.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 15/02/2020 14:38

Go for a scan because you have a tummy bug? To pass it around to other pregnant women?Hmm

Hoik · 15/02/2020 14:46

So many people being needlessly shitty with the OP. She's in pain and feeling unwell from either a bug or an as yet unknown medical problem, she's understandably worried about the effect it is having on her pregnancy, she has said herself that a scan was for reassurance and is secondary to getting herself checked out which was the main point of going.

NHS advice is to call 111 if you have diarrhoea and/or vomiting with severe stomach pain or signs of dehydration. OP has followed this advice and is now going to get checked out by a professional which is the best course of action in her particular set of circumstances.

Hoik · 15/02/2020 14:48

OP said in her second post that she had realised they won't do a scan so she will wait until she is recovered and then enquire about one. She also said her own GP had told her to go to the hospital if the stomach pains didn't stop.

SirChing · 15/02/2020 14:50

Really glad that you called 111 OP. It's potentially VERY dangerous not to listen to your own intuition about whether you need to seek further advice.

Fine to tell OP not to go to A&E, but all those who have just said "it's a bug so rest and fluids" - I am presuming that you have all nurses someone with a perforated bowel?

It is so dangerous to give unqualified medical advice online. OPs should always be told to contact GP/111/A&E or 999 depending on the severity of how they describe their symptoms. Telling posters NOT to seek medical advice is so irresponsible.

PerpetuallyExhaustedPigeon · 15/02/2020 14:56

You know full well Liverpool Womens won’t do. ‘Reassurance scan’ especially on a weekend and especially when you have D&V. You did the right thing calling 111 and if you want a scan get a private one. Honestly!

Chocchoc88 · 15/02/2020 15:03

@Perpetually I don’t know ‘full well’ hence my ask. Jesus Christ.

OP posts:
Ineedcoffee2345 · 15/02/2020 15:08

I've never heard of a reassurance scan for having D&V onlt for bleeding etc. Another waste of NHS money.

PerpetuallyExhaustedPigeon · 15/02/2020 15:11

@Chocchoc88 Well now you do. I’m surprised you didn’t think that a tertiary centre hospital that doesn’t actually have a full A&E and simply has a gynae ER for urgent gynae/obstetric EMERGENCIES wouldn’t provide bloody ‘reassurance scans’. You’d be totally unreasonable to rock up to the Royal A&E with this too.

Trees2905 · 15/02/2020 15:13

Please don’t go to a maternity hospital to insist on a scan when you’ve got a tummy bug! Phone 111 and go to A&E if you are worried about the tummy bug dehydrating you.

Lozz22 · 15/02/2020 15:17

The EPAU where I live doesn't even scan on a weekend so I think you'll be extremely hard pressed to get a scan today. I had to go in to A&E one Saturday night when I was 9 weeks Pregnant because of bleeding and passing clots. Was told they couldn't scan me until the Monday but it looked like I had a kidney infection so was prescribed antibiotics. Wasn't too concerned because I also had a SCH and was told to expect bleeding and clots. Dr did another Pregnancy Rest and it came out straight away with a blazing positive. He said the lady before me was also Pregnant and hers wasn't anywhere near as strong as mine. I did unfortunately find out our Baby had died at my scan a couple of days later. But I do have problems carrying though

whatsleep · 15/02/2020 15:21

Glad you’ve phoned 111. Hope they can check you over properly and offer reassurance if there is nothing to worry about. Hope you’re feeling better soon Flowers

Chocchoc88 · 15/02/2020 15:25

@PerpetuallyExhaustedPigeon - I’m currently in a hospital being seen to though? So my symptoms have warranted me to come along. You haven’t read my updates/posts since my original one. Also, take a look at this on the Women’s website which led to me questioning what I should do, simple as that:

www.liverpoolwomens.nhs.uk/our-services/maternity/if-you-are-concerned/

I’ve never known a group of angrier women than those on MN, honestly.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 15/02/2020 15:27

Best of luck @chocchoc88, I hope you get soon too fast! I felt like I was dying, it’s an awful bug.

oncemorewithfeeling99 · 15/02/2020 15:28

Hope you get some help and are feeling better soon OP

Rosebel · 15/02/2020 15:29

I'm glad you called 111 and they got you an appointment. I was referred for a reassurance scan earlier this week due to having stomach pains so they may do the same or refer you to have a scan Monday.
I hope you're okay its horrible feeling rubbish and especially worrying when you're pregnant. Pay no attention to the people on here being nasty. You know you're body better than they do.

SirChing · 15/02/2020 15:31

Are people in competition to see who can be most scathing to the OP? It doesn't make OP look bad but it says an awful lot about some posters.

isadoradancing123 · 15/02/2020 15:32

God, so much sarcasm and nastiness, no need for it

isadoradancing123 · 15/02/2020 15:32

Of course its better to be checked,

Thehop · 15/02/2020 15:36

Get well soon

undead · 15/02/2020 15:45

I found out that they quite relaxed in Women's. I was sent there by midwife because of high blood pressure. They measured and said I will fine and see midwife in a week. Two days later I felt ill and called them. I said I was seen for possible pre enclampsia two days ago sand o feel significantly worse. I was told that they are busy and go to walk-in clinic. I went and they sent me straight away to Womems and I was induced.
