To just admit myself to the emerg room

15 weeks pregnant and been so ill since Tuesday, severe diarrhoea, mixed with constipation, stomach hard to touch and delicate. Anyway went to the docs on Thursday who helped me out a bit with some prescription liquids to help things out but it’s now Saturday and my stomach is playing up yet again. Have eaten little to nothing and the pain has given me sleepless nights.

When I rang my hospital (the Women’s in Liverpool) they said only come into the emerg room if I’m bleeding? But I’m not having that. So I’m wanting to go along and just wait it out there so I can get some sort of reassurance scan and speak to someone. Plus my doctor even said if the pain stays/worsens just go straight there.

So would I be unreasonable to just rock up?

So you’re not talking about a&e but the maternity units triage department?

Taking possibly quite a nasty stomach bug into a room full of pregnant women... after being told they can’t/won’t do anything? Why? If anything you call out of hours, like 111, and ask for an appointment if you feel that you need seen by a doctor. A scan wont help the shits, but taking it into a room of vulnerable people will spread it.

CakeandCustard28 · 15/02/2020 11:01

Not a good idea to go hospital with a stomach bug, infact it’s just selfish risking infecting other patients who are vulnable. Rest and take plenty of fluids. Can’t you get a private scan for when your feeling more human? Wouldn’t request a NHS scan for a sickness bug.

Hoik · 15/02/2020 11:02

NHS guidance is to seek medical advice if you have vomiting/diarrhoea and are experiencing severe stomach pain or signs of dehydration (there are other circumstances where you should seek advice too but these two are the most relevant to OP).

OrangeLindt · 15/02/2020 11:03

Ring 111 instead. A&E is for Accidents or Emergency's, not Diarrhoea.

Tombliwho · 15/02/2020 11:04

Yes take your severe D&V bug around other pregnant women. Excellent idea.
Alternatively phone 111.

Hoik · 15/02/2020 11:05

OP, there is advice here about it

www.tommys.org/pregnancy-information/symptom-checker/diarrhoea-and-vomiting-pregnancy

Ring 111 and see what they say, they will probably want you to attend either a walk-in or out of hours. In my case they sent an ambulance as I'd fainted due to dehydration Blush

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/02/2020 11:06

I’ve never had a vomiting bug with diarrhoea and constipation. That sounds like something else.

CalamityJune · 15/02/2020 11:07

OP has sought medical advice and she has been given it. A scan will do absolutely nothing. And if you feel well enough to sit around in a waiting room for an indefinite amount of time, then you're well enough to lie in bed feeling sorry for yourself, drinking fluids and waiting for it to pass.

I'm sorry you feel unwell but yes, you would be being very unreasonable

icedgem85 · 15/02/2020 11:08

You mention a scan. They won’t scan you at A&E - especially for a tummy bug. Even if you were bleeding, all they’d do is check it wasn’t life threatening to you and send you to EPU on Monday. There’s no reason to think this is a risk to your baby. Just stay at home and remain hydrated, lucozade for electrolytes and dioralyte. Of course if you are worried you are severely dehydrated then you should go to A&E and they will give you fluids.

MayMiracle · 15/02/2020 11:08

I had a couple of awful gastric episodes when I was in the first 20 weeks of both my pregnancies.

Vomiting, diarrhoea, horrendous cramping, tears from the pain. Once I went to hospital because I felt so awful. They found the baby's heartbeat, checked my urine (which showed I was really dehydrated from the v&d) and sent me on my way. There isn't much they can do aside from rehydrate you.

A week or so later i went for a scan which thankfully showed all was okay. The DR said that the baby is usually very well protected and insulated from all of this, and blissfully unaware of how dreadful you are feeling.

Rest and fluids, or ice chips. It's miserable, I know. But it will pass Thanks

stuckinthemiddlewithtwats · 15/02/2020 11:09

I doubt they'd scan you anyway.
I was admitted to hospital in absolute agony a couple of weeks ago (I'm due in less than a week) and they didn't scan me then even though I have reduced movement and a high risk pregnancy.

They're very unlikely to scan just for your reassurance and you don't want to go spreading any germs around where other pregnant women may catch them. Best to wait until it clears up as it's likely just a stomach bug. Give it a few more days and see how it goes.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 15/02/2020 11:12

Its likely OP that your actually badly constipated. The diarrhoea is likely all that can get around the blockage.
Speak to your pharmacist about stool softeners or Glycerin Suppositories then see your GP if no improvement.

Bipbipbipbip · 15/02/2020 11:15

You've got a bug by the sounds of it. Don't take it into a waiting room full of pregnant women, mostly likely women having miscarriages, they don't want D&V too. You need rest and fluid, you can do that at home.

LittlePaintBox · 15/02/2020 11:16

There are conditions like appendicitis and gallstones which can cause acute episodes of pain, but presumably your GP checked you out for anything like that. You're obviously in distress and in pain, but going to hospital isn't going to cure that if you have a bug.

Southwest12 · 15/02/2020 11:16

I would ring 111 and see if they can get you an apt at out of hours, if it's bowel related rather than pregnancy then the emergency unit at the Women's will be of no use at all, you'll need to be referred to your local hospital where the surgeons are based.

Heckythump1 · 15/02/2020 11:16

No.... This is neither an accident or an emergency.
You would be very selfish to go to a maternity unit or A&E with a stomach bug.

lurker69 · 15/02/2020 11:19

don't got to a&e you have been given medical advise if you really don't trust it phone 111, hospitals get shut down thanks to people brings sickness bugs in and spreading it around! they will not give you a scan I had a massive bleed and all they did was check heartbeat and send me home, I had to pay £90 for a private scan to find out it was caused by a low lying placenta. I know its concerning being ill when you're pregnant but theres nothing that can be done, try and rest and take small sips of water to try and raise hydration

Wonkywyebrows · 15/02/2020 11:20

Is this an issue with pregnancy or a potential stomach bug?
If it’s a stomach bug I can’t see anything would thank for for potentially infecting other pregnant women with it?
Ring 111 if you’re worried.

Elouera · 15/02/2020 11:21

You said you'd go to A&E and even pay!

Then see a private Dr and ask them for a scan!

PinkShinyFlowers · 15/02/2020 11:23

Ignore everyone on here.

If you are worried and feel ill , see if there is a local walk in centre to try

A&E on a weekend will be hellish, and you will wait for hours.

If you don’t feel terribly ill, see doctor next week.

lostfrequencies · 15/02/2020 11:25

When I was around 18 weeks and got a sickness bug and took to my bed for 2 days. I became really dehydrated and felt bloody awful so I ended up calling 111 who gave me an out of hours appointment which lead to me getting admitted to hospital and diagnosed with sepsis.

So I'm glad you've decided to call 111 and hope you feel better soon.

lostfrequencies · 15/02/2020 11:26

Sorry I didn't my message to try and scare you! I just thought you were getting some harsh messages from people making out that you were being OTT.

fairynick · 15/02/2020 11:27

The advice here is shocking! The doctor said to go to A&E if the symptoms stay/get worse which they have! Mumsnet think they’re martyrs for never going A&E and it’s pathetic. I think people rocking up to hospital with a scratch are pathetic and a strain on the NHS, but people who are unsure/have borderline symptoms ESPECIALLY PREGNANT WOMEN, it’s always best to be safe rather than sorry.

OlivejuiceU2 · 15/02/2020 11:27

You’re unlikely to get a scan to be honest with you. I had pain and bleeding, went to a&e as advised on the phone. Didn’t do anything but book an appointment for me much later on in the week.
Thankfully my baby was fine, we paid for a private scan.

NoSharon · 15/02/2020 11:37

It could be any number of things really. I'd see what 111 advise.
