To ask if you drank alcohol during pregnancy

I'm curious as to people thoughts on alcohol during pregnancy?

I was always of the opinion that I wouldn't touch a single drop of alcohol during pregnancy but now I'm wondering would it be significantly harmful to have say one small glass of wine with dinner every so often (less than once a fortnight).

None. Not worth any risks and it would feel like giving my baby alcohol to me.

Not a drinker though so it was no hardship to not have any.

Megan2018 · 14/02/2020 18:15

Not a drop.
Didn’t want it and I was a big drinker before. Only had about 6 glasses since she was born-used to drink 6 bottles a week!

Connie222 · 14/02/2020 18:30

I’m always far too sick to drink water, let alone alcohol.

If I wasn’t sick I wouldn’t drink though as I don’t see the point in just having one drink. I drink to get drunk and I wouldn’t do that in pregnancy.

Whatisthisfuckery · 14/02/2020 18:30

Roughly speaking I had a very small glass of wine per week, but in reality not that often.

StoneofDestiny · 14/02/2020 18:59

Not a drop - took no risks re food, drink or anything else.

TheNavigator · 14/02/2020 19:07

Not with the first 2. With the 3rd I didn't realise I was pregnant until half way through and was drinking heavily as I was grieving the death of my second child. What can you? Maybe she'd be Einstein if I hadn't caned it for half her gestation but I think she is a million times better than that. She is perfect.

At the risk of starting all this up again, I bet you got into cars without a second thought.

LowcaAndroidow · 14/02/2020 19:51

Hope none of these "took no risks" posters were fat or old when they had their babies Grin

whywhywhy6 · 14/02/2020 19:55

No. There is no evidence confirming it is safe to drink during pregnancy (or breastfeeding). People say they believe it’s safe but unless they’ve carried out a proper study, they have no idea.

MarchDaffs · 14/02/2020 19:57

What would you feel is a proper study?

Pinktornado · 14/02/2020 19:59

I felt so sick I couldn’t face alcohol anyway. Especially beer which I used to love. Still can’t face it 2 years on Sad

TheFuckingDogs · 14/02/2020 20:00

Giant gin in the bath when almost 2 weeks overdue! Recommended by the GP if you’re interested 😊

whywhywhy6 · 14/02/2020 20:02

An evidence based scientific study with a control group and significant sample size blah blah rather than simply saying “I have a healthy attitude to risk and although I wouldn’t give my baby half a glass of champagne I’m ok with drinking it myself and letting it cross the placenta or via breastmilk”. People are happy to kid themselves and claim there’s no evidence it does harm, without acknowledging there’s also no evidence it doesn’t do harm.

SlowMoFuckingToes · 14/02/2020 20:02

It's a teratogen. They can't do the study because no ethics committee would let you. That told me all I needed to know. It's poison to the baby so no I didn't drink any.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/02/2020 20:09

Well I unknowingly drank alcohol not knowing I was pregnant. I was young and visiting a friend at university and drank a LOT - clubbing, drinking shots and spirits.

Didn't touch a drop after I found out I was pregnant, the guilt was too much. Had a healthy baby.

Nat6999 · 14/02/2020 20:22

I had a glass of wine at my mum's 65th birthday dinner, I was 6 months then & a couple of Baileys at Christmas when I was 8 months, that was all i had.

Nat6999 · 14/02/2020 20:29

Peachesforfree have you tried Sainsburys alcohol free wines? The red is lovely, I'm not a massive fan of red wine but it is light, fruity & not too dry, very much like an Italian red, the rose is also nice very much like a Zinfandel.

LaurieMarlow · 14/02/2020 21:18

You don’t seem to understand the mechanics of how we produce breastmilk. I suggest you go educate yourself.

couchlover · 14/02/2020 21:38

I love a drink and drink more than moat but no I managed 2 full pregnancies without drinking. I don't see the need and we don't really know the effects on the babies

FET2020 · 14/02/2020 21:49

No I didn’t want to risk a much wanted and hard fought for IVF pregnancy, but my best friend was pregnant the same time as me and she drank a little. Both our babies are super healthy, so a little alcohol can’t hurt.

StoneofDestiny · 14/02/2020 22:00

Yes - essential to get to work. Wasn't essential to drink alcohol or eat soft cheeses etc

LaurieMarlow · 14/02/2020 22:02

Yes - essential to get to work

Did you ever get in a car for any other reason than to go to work?

MarchDaffs · 14/02/2020 22:02

Did you avoid all nonessential travel?

avocadotofu · 15/02/2020 08:32

Nope I didn't. I just didn't feel it was worth the possible risks.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 15/02/2020 08:47

I didn’t get shit faced but had a few drinks here and there .
