To not know how to use a flannel?

I went to a Temple Spa party my friend was having a while ago. The person who was demonstrating all the products handed us all a hot flannel to wipe our faces with, and it was heavenly!

I've never used one before and I have bought a couple now but I haven't started using them because I'm not sure how to?

I know that sounds really silly but do you use them to take off your makeup? Or do you wash your face and then wipe off your soap/cleanser with them?

Also, then what do you do with them - where do you store them? We don't have a towel rail in the bathroom, just a radiator at the moment as we've not long since moved into a new house. Do you wash them after every use or is it more of a weekly thing? How many do I need?

I feel very silly that I've gotten to 30 years old without knowing this! Grin

I use mine once and wash. My mother uses her face flannel a few times and her body flannel once - it's up to you. In the old days, we used to change them weekly or every few days if you were fancy Grin

Store them over the basin edge or on the radiator/towel rack (they quickly get whiffy otherwise - they really need to dry out between uses)

Take your makeup off first, as otherwise it stains, and use to remove facial cleansers or wash.

But if you have never used a flannel before, what have you been using?!

Thelnebriati · 13/02/2020 11:45

In the shower I use a scrunchie to wash, then a flannel to rub down. I have to rinse it and wring it a few times, then I'm nearly dry when I step out and use a towel.

Google Caroline Hirons. She is the queen of flannel use.

Don’t feel silly! I think it is partly because we are now so aware that make up wipes aren’t very ecological that flannels have started to make a come back. Until recently, they were definitely seen as old fashioned and weird. I remove make up with a normal cleanser and then use a liquid melt (but very gentle soap would be ok as long as it was not drying. Liquid handwash will be too strong). Run your flannel under the hot tap, squeeze, and wipe round your face and neck. You will need to do it a few times to remove everything. The advantage of a flannel over hands alone is that they are slightly exfoliating. You should use a clean one every day. They can look nice rolled up in a little basket. Old ones can go in the laundry basket.

I switched to washing my face with soap and a flannel a couple of years ago and have never looked back. Now when I use a cream cleanser or wipes it just doesn't feel clean to me. Just foam up in my hands, rub over my face, rinse the flannel in clean warm water and clean off. Then I rinse the flannel under the hottest water and stick on the radiator. I tend to wash them after a couple of uses, every time I put a wash on I stick them in with it.

I use a hot flannel to oil cleanse. Takes off even the most stubborn makeup like a dream. Use once and then wash with bio and they come out beautifully white and clean. Sometimes if 3mo DD is having a tricky evening I use a face wipe instead and properly cleanse in the morning, the muck still on my face is revolting 🤢 If you're using to remove make up or are in any way prone to spots I would definitely wash after each use.

Thelnebriati · 13/02/2020 11:59

I soak mine in a small bucket with some bio powder and O2 powder, then they go in the wash with the towels. I get bundles of the really cheap ones, they're nice and rough.

littlepeas · 13/02/2020 12:04

I double cleanse - rub cleansing balm all over dry face and rub off with flannel (lukewarm for me as too hot makes me all red), then wash again with foaming wash and remove with flannel. One use per flannel - I was them with the towels.

ClientQueen · 13/02/2020 12:06

Here

I have a basket of grey flannels and use them every day and they get washed with everything else

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 13/02/2020 12:06

Thank you for all your replies, and for not making fun of me Grin

Before now, I've always just used cotton wool pads to take off my makeup, or occasionally wipes.

That's another thing too @nettie434, I've been feeling bad for using something disposable, so will be much better from that perspective too.

I also use cotton breast/nipple pads instead of cotton wool now for removing eye makeup. They get stained but I'm not fussed!

Nitpickpicnic · 13/02/2020 12:14

I agree that grey flannels are the best- buy 6 or so, use them then rinse with hot water at the basin. Good for 2-3 goes then in with the school uniform or towel hot wash for mine.

Makeup will stain white ones, and bleach is not good for the environment. The grey ones will still come up clean, but not need to be ‘pristine’.

OldEvilOwl · 13/02/2020 12:18

How do you wash your face in the morning? I always use a flannel with warm water to wash my face, then put moisturiser etc on when it's dry

TheWordmeister · 13/02/2020 12:19

I double cleanse. I take my makeup off with Dermalogica pre-cleanse and then use a hot, clean flannel to wipe off. I then use their Special cleansing gel and again, wipe off with the rinsed flannel which then goes into the wash.

I use white flannels land they get put in with the towels on a wash.

myself2020 · 13/02/2020 12:23

I use 3 types (different colours so i remember): face (get washed every 2-3 day, rinse and dry on radiator in between), body (arms/legs/armpits etc, get washed same as face), and “down below” ones (get washed after every use). i have a wetbag for the ones ready to be washed, and they go straight into the machine

Aridane · 13/02/2020 12:35

Other than as a child, I’ve never used a flannel.

AuntieMarys · 13/02/2020 12:37

Love a flannel for double cleansing

speakout · 13/02/2020 12:37

I love my flannels too- I have a huge pile of them. I use them for face and body.
They can be picked up very cheaply- I think Home Bargains have cotton flannels for 39p each.
I have cut a few into squares and turned them into make up remover pads.

I was all my flannels and wipes after one use in a hot wash.

NewName54321 · 13/02/2020 12:43

DM used to carry a damp flannel in a plastic bag in her bag for cleaning up children's hands and faces.

opinionatedfreak · 13/02/2020 12:43

I’m also a nocturnal double cleanser - morning single cleanse I use muslins.

I’ve got some liz Earle /branded ones and some I made by hemming old baby muslins.

I use one per face wash so two/ day and wash them with my towels.

My skin doesn’t Like hot water so I use tepid to avoid going bright red.

separatebeds · 13/02/2020 12:45

I have a pile of muslin cloths to wash my face. I think their structure is better for removing tiny bits of dirt /makeup and dead skins.
Cleanse with chosen cleanser applied with finger tips and then wipe face clean with damp cloth.
I use one per day then wash and store in a folded pile in bathroom cupboard.
These cloths take up much less space than a bulky towelling flannel.

I bought these from ebay.

SidsWife · 13/02/2020 12:48

I’ve never used one either. The only people I know who have flannels are elderly.

Lily193 · 13/02/2020 12:51

Another vote for muslin cloths, with Eve Lom or Votary cleanser. Flannels are too harsh for my skin.
