Liqourish or Liqouriss?

PyongyangKipperbang · 12/02/2020 23:25

I say Liqourish but in a couple of audio books I have listened to lately, both the readers say Liqouriss.

Am I wrong?!

YANBU for Liqourish
YABU for Liqouriss

I say liquorish but spell it liquorice like in my name!

BackforGood · 12/02/2020 23:39

"ish"

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 12/02/2020 23:39

Definitely 'iss', probably a regional thing. I'm in West of Scotland and it's always 'iss' here.

EBearhug · 12/02/2020 23:45

licker-ish
(liquorice)

VeryQuaintIrene · 12/02/2020 23:47

Iss. Can't think of any other instances of "ice" being pronounced "ish", but prove me wrong...

MelanieFrontage · 12/02/2020 23:48

Lick-rish

Hmmm, written down that looks all kinds of wrong 😂

Doyoumind · 12/02/2020 23:48

Definitely ish.

LoseLooseLucy · 12/02/2020 23:50

Licker-ish.

Emijen · 12/02/2020 23:51

Lick-rish for me

PenguinsOnParade · 12/02/2020 23:51

Iss I think. I can't quite decide which one I would say if I wasn't thinking about it and I don't say it very often as I can't stand the stuff.

I'm Scottish but I've heard both used here.

xyzandabc · 12/02/2020 23:52

Iss. My parents, who I learnt it from are Scottish, maybe a dialect thing?

SarahAndQuack · 12/02/2020 23:56

I say 'lickoriss'. Definitely heard both though.

FWIW I'm a medievalist, and the spellings I find in medieval English support the idea people used to say it with a 'ss' rather than a 'sh' sound. It seems the 'sh' pronunciation came about later on.

PorpentinaScamander · 12/02/2020 23:58

Lick or ish

I dont need to say it often. Its vile stuff Grin

PurpleFlower1983 · 12/02/2020 23:59

‘Ish’ is definitely the modern pronunciation here in Pontefract, the medieval historic home of liquorice.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/02/2020 00:01

Licoriss

(Loving that midnight on MN finds a contribution on this important subject from a medievalistGrin)

YasssKween · 13/02/2020 00:04

I thought this was going to ask which spelling to use for a baby name.

Bit disappointed tbh Grin

HollowTalk · 13/02/2020 00:05

I love that about MN too, @errolthedragon!

PenguinsOnParade · 13/02/2020 00:19

Changing mine. Had to speak to DH about it, he's an ish and after going over it a few times I think I'm actually an ish as well. It's a weird word when you say it over and over, no matter which pronunciation you use.

Blimeyoreilly2020 · 13/02/2020 00:21

ISHHHHH!

SarahAndQuack · 13/02/2020 00:26

Grin @ErrolTheDragon, I'm currently trawling through fifteenth-century letters.

Some are fascinating (or infuriating). I've just read one by a brilliant lady who is telling her husband how to manage his business better, because she's the expert. But they are hard going to read, so I am also on MN, and also looking up their medical remedies.

WorraLiberty · 13/02/2020 00:32

It's lick-riss for me but that could be down to my Irish parentage, I'm not sure Grin

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 13/02/2020 00:33

Lic-r-is, but the 'is' is sounded behind my teeth, not with my lips, iyswim.

Probably makes me sound like a right humpty that way, but it seems like a word that should be said as though it's being whispered, to me.

Sonichu · 13/02/2020 00:34

Absolutely fucking rank.

I mean "iss".
