Liqourish or Liqouriss?

I say Liqourish but in a couple of audio books I have listened to lately, both the readers say Liqouriss.

Am I wrong?!

Definitely 'iss', probably a regional thing. I'm in West of Scotland and it's always 'iss' here.

Iss I think. I can't quite decide which one I would say if I wasn't thinking about it and I don't say it very often as I can't stand the stuff.

I'm Scottish but I've heard both used here.

I say 'lickoriss'. Definitely heard both though.

FWIW I'm a medievalist, and the spellings I find in medieval English support the idea people used to say it with a 'ss' rather than a 'sh' sound. It seems the 'sh' pronunciation came about later on.

‘Ish’ is definitely the modern pronunciation here in Pontefract, the medieval historic home of liquorice.

Changing mine. Had to speak to DH about it, he's an ish and after going over it a few times I think I'm actually an ish as well. It's a weird word when you say it over and over, no matter which pronunciation you use.

Grin @ErrolTheDragon, I'm currently trawling through fifteenth-century letters.

Some are fascinating (or infuriating). I've just read one by a brilliant lady who is telling her husband how to manage his business better, because she's the expert. But they are hard going to read, so I am also on MN, and also looking up their medical remedies.

Lic-r-is, but the 'is' is sounded behind my teeth, not with my lips, iyswim.

Probably makes me sound like a right humpty that way, but it seems like a word that should be said as though it's being whispered, to me.
