Is this a crap Valentine's day "gift"?

My partner and myself don't usually swap pressents, just get a pizza and watch a film. And he's hard to buy for and never wants anything.

But I want to show him how much I appreciate him so thought I would secretly tidy/organise his office, which has become a complete dumping ground for junk. (Kids toys, old clothes, etc) I won't be throwing anything away that belongs to him btw or going thru his filling cabinets or anything just tidying, cleaning and maybe buy a few plants, pictures, etc to brighten it up.

Is this a good idea? I'm just doubting myself now and worried he'll just be a bit unimpressed. Like, I've just cleaned and tidied - so what?!

PurpleDaisies

I haven’t taken issue at all.
I was conversing - what I thought a forum was for. My mistake!

I maybe should clarify, we've always called the room his office but he doesn't really use it much. I think he likes the idea of his own space (I refuse to call it a man cave) but I doubt he'll ever use it much.

So it wouldn't be his stuff I'm moving/organising but other things that have kind of "migrated" there over time. He has a comic book collection in there and dvd's and I won't be touching those (much as I'd like to!) and I wouldn't throw anything of his away.

It's mainly moving things out of there that prob shouldn't be there in the first place!

Lovely idea OP.

I think its a good idea - maybe put a bottle of something and/or favourite chocolates on his desk afterwards as the "gift".

BlueJava · 12/02/2020 10:45

Personally I wouldn't see it as a present per se, more as you doing a favour. However - he may not like it if he has private stuff there! Or likes his own space his own way. Perhaps tidy up and then give him a gift he'd like in it (DVD, something that connects to what he likes/alcohol).

Thank you know your partner so should be more clues up on whether he will appreciate this or not. I personally think it’s a lovely gesture. Why don’t you give it a fresh lick of paint maybe put a shelf up or two additionally?

FizzyIce · 12/02/2020 10:59

It’s a nice idea.
We don’t celebrate it but I do like doing little things to let dh know I appreciate him and he’d like this

I'd not like someone rearranging my office. It may look at mess to others but I know where everything is. A TA once did this and it never got over it, really. I no longer work there. I was polite enough at the time btw but actually cried in private. It was my stuff even if it looked old or unnecessary to her. She filled a wheeley bin!!!
Sorry to speak so colloquially but I was once in management! Honestly. 16 years ago when I was ambitious.

StiffUpperQuip · 12/02/2020 12:10

I'd love it. I'm not the neatest of people and my house can get in a pretty big state (nothing channel 4 documentary worthy though) until I go mad and blitz the place but if DH did the mad cleaning and organising instead of me? Hell yeah I'd like it.

My local Sainsbury’s has expensive-ish wrinkle cream on its valentines gift shelves (as opposed to the more everyday creams that cost a tenner rather than £15-20 that the ‘gift’ ones do).

Nothing says happy valentines, I love you, quite so much as ‘look I think you need anti wrinkle cream’!!!

singtanana · 12/02/2020 18:49

I actually did this! It was his birthday so I bought a new office chair too but I think he was more pleased it was tidy and the pictures were up. It was a general dumping ground. There’s really no where in our house that is secret/private to the other so I wasn’t worried about it being an intrusion.
