DH travelling to Singapore?

Jadefeather7 · 12/02/2020 04:13

Hi
I’m pregnant and we also have a young baby.
DH was planning to go to Singapore at the end of this month for work. Most of his clients are there and he’s just finished a big project and doesn’t have much on at the moment. His company are ok with people continuing to travel to Asia. He thinks he will be able to go in April (I’m not sure it’s going to be over by then?) Once the baby is here in a few months it will be difficult for him to go for a bit so he would really like to go before May.
AIBU to think it’s probably going to be too risky to Travel there for a few months?

Don't worry now about something that hasn't happened yet. I don't think they will let him go if the virus isn't under control. Just quietly watch the situation unfold.

Jadefeather7 · 12/02/2020 04:35

Well they are letting him go, he just said to them that he thinks it’s too risky because I’m pregnant....

But you are talking about him flying in 5/6 weeks time. Things will be different then....either it won't be bad or it will be terrible and your husband won't go.

paperpens · 12/02/2020 05:05

Does anyone ever wonder what would happen if pilots and cabin crew refused to fly in case they got coronavirus?
This hysteria about travelling is ridiculous.
The UK has coronovirus too you know?

My family lives in Hong Kong and I am so glad I didn’t buy plane tickets to visit during Easter this year. (Because of the social unrest since last June). Singapore has a similar number of confirmed cases to Hong Kong (49 vs 47). It’s causing mass panic in the city. There was a huge rise over the last week as a family of 9 was struck down after a family gathering, and then another outbreak where 5 are infected in the same apartment block. The apartment block case was where someone living in a flat infecting others in the same block. The flats share the same soil stack. This is the same reason behind a huge sars cluster in 2003 inside an apartment block. (www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/health-environment/article/3050068/coronavirus-your-toilet-how-hong-kong-policy)

And you have seen how the British man who attended a work conference in Singapore infected a cluster in France and Brighton.

I don’t think it’s BU to be worried about travelling to region. I wouldn’t plan to go at the end of this month as I don’t think it will be over. April maybe different. Basically unless the crisis is over, I wouldn’t be going. Even if I have purchased the plane tickets to visit my family, and the insurance won’t refund and the planes aren’t cancelled, I won’t be flying under the current situation.

NotGenerationAlpha · 12/02/2020 05:08

This is the link to the article about the apartment block. The spread was due to substandard alteration to the water and sewage pipes. www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/health-environment/article/3050068/coronavirus-your-toilet-how-hong-kong-policy

NotGenerationAlpha · 12/02/2020 05:10

The article also has a picture showing how some of the cases are clustered. While the numbers infected locally is low, it shows how spreadable the disease is. Similar to the case here in Brighton.

I live in Macau and things are pretty calm here. We are all just staying home and schools, casinos, bars, gyms, etc are shut. Supermarkets are open and well stocked. I think it’s a little worse in HK and a lot worse in some areas of China, of course.
As someone else has just posted, just wait. I wouldn’t be booking any flights yet...
It may have peaked; it may get a lot worse in Europe and other countries while is stabilises here in Asia. No-one knows. Just stay calm and wash your hands a little more often. And eating Chinese food is fine! Haha!

NotGenerationAlpha · 12/02/2020 05:26

But Macau has only 10 cases! I don’t know how it has so much fewer than Hong Kong? Did it close borders? There were protests in Hong Kong about the border issue by health care professionals.

It’s also calm because shops are closing? Restaurants are struggling badly too as HongKongers are staying home.

But then my parents are the panicky type!

NotGenerationAlpha · 12/02/2020 05:28

Ah you said public places are closed. I think that’s where different people behave different in the face of crisis. I don’t think the family hotpot and apartment block clusters are helping.

This hysteria about travelling is ridiculous.

It is, it's getting worse and frankly a bit scary.

In the last day or two some schools in the UK have started asking/telling parents who have been to the far east recently not to do the school drop/off pick up or go anywhere near the school gates. I also know of an instance of a child of a crew member being excluded from school temporarily because that parent had been to HKG earlier this month..

Whatever happened to "keep calm and carry on"?

BTW apologies if I didn't mention it earlier but I must disclose I've been to Singapore in the last couple of weeks so the sensitive had better wipe their keyboards and screens down with an antiseptic wipe...

OfftoPenscome · 12/02/2020 05:45

My work banned all business trips to the effected countries in that part of the world already 2 weeks ago.

I would not want him going if I was you.

DH is due to go to the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona soon. His employer still wants him and his team to attend despite many exhibitors pulling out. Shock

100,000 people attend - i am very uncomfortable about it.

Jadefeather7 · 12/02/2020 06:38

I should add if I wasn’t pregnant I’d probably not be as worried about is as I am.

@notimagain an independent school in southampton has closed over the coronavirus already. www.dailyecho.co.uk/news/18228736.st-marys-independent-school-remains-shut-amid-coronavirus-fears/

DH has a colleague with a son in the school. She's also home in isolation because of it. One of DD's classmates' parent teach at that school too. But the classmate has left, otherwise, we'd have two fairly close link to this suspected case. DD goes to chinese school in southampton and it's already closed because of the scare. There were barely anyone at the saturday school for the last two weeks either.

sansou · 12/02/2020 17:05

DH is booked to go to Barcelona for the Mobile World Congress too and I've more or less persuaded him that it's not a good idea to go stand in a conference hall amongst thousands of people in the midst of this pandemic. It's not essential and yes, his work/job would suffer as would everyone else's who are cancelling by the day.

SueEllenMishke · 12/02/2020 17:11

I was meant to be attending a conference in Singapore in 5 weeks and it's been postponed as they're predicting it will get worse. I was for to do other things while I was there and I've postponed the whole trip for now.

Frazzled2207 · 12/02/2020 17:18

I think rather than him actually getting the virus my main concern would be flights getting stopped while he was there possibly making it very difficult for him to get home. Or they might make him self-isolate when he gets home which presumably would be ok for you but annoying for his employer.

If i were him I'd be looking at what could be done instead of going.
Failing that April might be better as things might well have calmed down by then.
If he goes and is sensible though, I'd try not to be too worried.

Frazzled2207 · 12/02/2020 17:19

Ps if he plans to go in April instead I bet things will be either a lot better or a lot worse by then. And if a lot worse he just wouldn't be able to go.
Which is a good thing surely.
