AIBU to think Waitrose is all fur coat and no knickers?

Im normally an Asda, M&S and Iceland shopper. I’m fed up of going to 3 different supermarkets a week for groceries (I like different things in each of the above stores) so over the last 2 weeks I ve tried Waitrose online delivery.

Both times the food has not been as good as M&S and Asda. I ve had black potatoes, eggs that have a black tinge to them when cooked and bland strawberries.

Some of the range I bought was duchy (sp) and it’s no different to Asda.

I don’t understand why Waitrose has this upmarket reputation.

I’m starting to think it’s all fur coat and no knickers..

Forgot to add, Waitrose self checkout machines are way better than any other supermarket too. Rarely have to call the assistant, and if you do they are there in about 4 seconds. Anywhere else I'm ripping out my hair in frustration at the number of times I need help.

GladAllOver · 11/02/2020 17:49

If the mushrooms were on that day's date they would be reduced later in the day wouldn't they?

They were already reduced and it was late in the day. I doubt if anyone would be wanting so many mushrooms to cook right away.

EwwSprouts · 11/02/2020 17:50

Not Waitrose related but I bought yellow sticker 6 ready made Yorkshire puddings in Asda at the weekend for £1.60 (the meat is good at our local one). Popped to M&S for bread and saw their 6 Yorkshire puds regular price is £1. Ruined my day Grin

The best thing about Sainsbury’s is the smart shop scanner. Scanning your own stuff as you walk around saves loads of time and hassle taking it all out to scan.

TatianaLarina · 11/02/2020 17:51

I’d say that’s M&S all advertising and all processed

Disagree. They do some nice stuff. M&S profiteroles are way ahead of other supermarkets - just had some on the weekend. Ace.

Their salads are a bit shit though. They seem to put vinegar and red peppers in everything.

Sparklingbrook · 11/02/2020 17:52

From what I can gather talking to staff anything like the mushrooms and other fruit and veg would be sent to charity if not sold by the time the shop closed.

MarshaBradyo · 11/02/2020 17:52

I’m not convinced re M&S but I’m annoyed Ocado are switching from Waitrose to them anyway.

Waitrose is very much over rated. YANBU

TatianaLarina · 11/02/2020 17:53

I’ve never had supermarket sushi that wasn’t minging incl Waitrose.

My local Waitrose has given over a whole counter to it at and there are 5 Japanese restaurants a stone’s throw away with the real thing. What’s the point?

copperoliver · 11/02/2020 17:54

I like Waitrose and Ocado. X

Blackandgreenteas · 11/02/2020 17:54

I do like a bit of Aldi tbh, although they don’t sell everything so don’t use it ever single week. I like Ocado for delivery but it’s not cheap (you can do quite well with offers though).

I’ve always thought Tesco’s to be the worst of all worlds. Sainsbos ok but nothing special. Waitrose good in store but imo very expensive.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 11/02/2020 17:55

Sainsburys are slightly better quality for half the price. Do you work for them?

I've genuinely never got the Sainsbury's is a quality supermarket myth. Ours are horrible.

This explains about food waste.

Sparklingbrook · 11/02/2020 17:57

I read today that Aldi might be introducing self service tills. I would definitely go more if that was the case. Our local Lidl already have them so I get get in and out with the few items I go there for.

Choclips · 11/02/2020 17:58

Over priced and lower than average quality of breads, cakes meats. Remains the shop of choice for what used to be termed upper middle class, couple of upper class stragglers and few lower class , upper class wannabes. To be honest all getting robbed knowingly in Waitrose but would look out of place in Asda 😆

There are a few classless that you see walking out with puzzled look, why did I pay 30 per cent more for Waitrose packaging ?

Bubbletrouble007 · 11/02/2020 18:00

We popped in to waitrose and my oh picked up some courgettes in plastic packaging. As I pulled them out of the trolley and onto the belt i noticed they were covered in fur. The sell by date had another 2 days to run and when I showed checkout girl she said she could reduce them to 29p .... baffled!

NemophilistRebel · 11/02/2020 18:01

It’s really not that expensive

I do a weekly shop and sometimes put the same items in an online basket of Morrison’s or Tesco’s and by the time you factor in that Waitrose never charge for delivery and always give a free paper that’s another £5 saved on top

They are excellent with substitutions and anything that you have ordered that is going off the same day you get given for free rather than them chucking it away.
All substitutions are always picked to be better than the one you ordered without charging for it.
Delivery slots always available the next day.

mrsm43s · 11/02/2020 18:01

I agree. I was sent a free 3 month delivery pass for Waitrose, so have been trying it out. I knew it was going to cost more (and it did) but I thought it would be nice to have some tastier, better quality items. I've been really disappointed. Fruit and veg have been exceptionally poor, and I've not been blown away by their meat either. Less choice of own brand products too, and I've often felt that I'm just paying for the name.

I've ditched and gone back to Morrisons, which generally is solidly good. They also use the Ocado delivery model, so very rare for there to be any items unavailable.

Asda I've generally found poor quality, but cheap. Tesco round here is quite hit and miss. Sainsbury's is good, but pricier and they make daft and expensive substitutions and don't honour the price of the OOS products. M&S I rarely use as not a large enough selection of items, and not convenient for me. I am partial to the odd visit to Aldi/Lidl to stock up on wine and gin some of their bargain products.

IHaveBrilloHair · 11/02/2020 18:02

@Poohpooh
They are really salty, and crunchy, and just the best pickles ever.

Xenia · 11/02/2020 18:04

I used Tescos for years -they did the first deliveries to homes and still go there sometimes. However I do now go into Waitrose now the twins re away at university and I have a bit more time and I do find most of the foods I prefer in there and it's a small one so quite quick to get stuff and easy to park.

(I don't really look at prices as I earn quite a bit).

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 11/02/2020 18:05

I agree @mantarays except that M&S is a polyester faux fur coat and badly fitting bra. Fortnums is real fur.

Doobigetta · 11/02/2020 18:05

Waitrose is the only one I actually enjoy shopping in. The range and the quality are streets ahead of the others.
M&S has gone downhill significantly in the last couple of years, as has Sainsburys.
Tesco is what you expect it to be- cheap and available.
The Coop varies hugely from one store to the next.
I went to Asda once and that’s all I have to say about Asda.

Honeyroar · 11/02/2020 18:05

I like their products- their houseware or boxed chocs etc, but I find their food overrated. Far from bad, but not as good as I’d expected from the hype (we don’t get Waitrose up
North so I was let down when I went in one after all these years of hearing about it). I find M@S much better in comparison.

StarlightLady · 11/02/2020 18:14

I think Waitrose quality has the edge. And their milk comes from ciws guaranteed to have been grass fed outdoors for a minimum of 120 days a year.

PS: I don’t own a fur coat but I’ll let you into a little secret. I have been in Waitrose without my knickers in the summer! Wink
