AIBU to think Waitrose is all fur coat and no knickers?

Im normally an Asda, M&S and Iceland shopper. I’m fed up of going to 3 different supermarkets a week for groceries (I like different things in each of the above stores) so over the last 2 weeks I ve tried Waitrose online delivery.

Both times the food has not been as good as M&S and Asda. I ve had black potatoes, eggs that have a black tinge to them when cooked and bland strawberries.

Some of the range I bought was duchy (sp) and it’s no different to Asda.

I don’t understand why Waitrose has this upmarket reputation.

I’m starting to think it’s all fur coat and no knickers..

YABU, Lidl just can't keep little Tarquinius and Millicent-Marie in their favourite lobster thermidor and quail's eggs that they simply have to have in their packed lunches. The butler is quite insistent that he will not be seen shopping anywhere else so what is one to do if you want to keep the staff?

Lovemusic33 · 11/02/2020 16:52

I can’t afford to shop in Waitrose or M&S unless I’m buying orange sticker items 😂

I shop online with tesco as their fruit and veg usually last the week, then I top up in Lidl’s during the week if needed (sometimes Aldi). Not a fan of Asda, when I go in there I end up buying unhealthy stuff as that’s usually what’s on offer.

Our Waitrose is comfy slacks and sensible shoes.

MintySpud · 11/02/2020 16:52

I think it's all mouth and no trousers.

Fur coat and no knickers sounds like Saturday night to me.

AnnaMagnani · 11/02/2020 16:54

YANBU. We had Christmas at SIL's one year and were treated to Heston Blumenthal this that and the other.

All fur coat and no knickers is exactly how to describe it.

DH and I were glad to get home to Lidl Christmas. Lidl Christmas is great. Nice stuff that tastes nice. No fancifying for the sake of it.

I find most Asda own brand stuff pretty poor tbh but also agree that Waitrose is nothing special. They do some nice stuff if you are really pushing the boat out but their own brand 'normal' range is overpriced and over marketed, same as M&S really- lots of nonsense marketing to make food seem fresh and wholesome when it's all from the same factories and full of the same ingredients.

Verbena37 · 11/02/2020 16:54

I find Waitrose fruit pretty crap. Blueberries and strawberries often have mould on a few berries on the shelves. Potatoes have been black through a whole bag before.
Very overpriced for just the same or worse than Tesco.
I like their basics range of stuff like rice, pasta, sauces etc but some stuff is a bit flavourless and random.

That said, I really don’t like Asda. Not easy to find anything in the store and fruit and veg never impresses me.

M&S pricey but I like it. Great vegan ranges,

FrenchJunebug · 11/02/2020 16:55

totally missing the point but YABU for buying strawberries in February.

KatherineJaneway · 11/02/2020 16:56

YABU. Waitrose is the real deal.

Sunflower20 · 11/02/2020 16:59

In my experience M&S is the best for ready meals, crips and fruit & veg. I used to like Lidl but the quality is shocking and I only get bananas there now.

Chottie · 11/02/2020 17:00

Each to their own. And I prefer Waitrose :)

Sparklingbrook · 11/02/2020 17:07

Our nearest Waitrose is very large, wide aisles, a sushi Bar and a Wine Bar. No queues at the tills and pleasant, helpful staff.
It's a nice shopping experience, no annoying music etc.

Bouledeneige · 11/02/2020 17:07

I agree that I find Waitrose fruit and veg of poor quality compared with Sainsbury's or Tesco's. But the range of deli, bakery and other food is very good and high quality.

TheWordmeister · 11/02/2020 17:07

I love Waitrose and M&S.

I’ve never been to an Asda.

NemophilistRebel · 11/02/2020 17:08

It’s my main supermarket and I don’t feel it’s any more expensive than Sainsbury’s or Tesco’s when I’ve compared

The produce is mostly much of a muchness but the meat is far better

Jellybeansincognito · 11/02/2020 17:09

Waitrose is good for stuff like sofritto. Their pizzas are good too.

I agree about M&S though- it’s my fave.

NemophilistRebel · 11/02/2020 17:09

I tried Asda once and bought the usual bits.
My previously non fussy toddler at the time even turned his nose up at some of the things he’d usually eat without problem from Waitrose

Sparklingbrook · 11/02/2020 17:10

There's a very good Valentine's Meal Deal for £20 on at the moment.

ThisIsBigMoon · 11/02/2020 17:14

It does vary by shop. I am equidistant between two, one very slightly smaller than the other but just as busy. I can never seem to get decent quality fruit and veg in the smaller one. Turnover seems similar but potatoes will be bashed black, strawberries tasteless. It makes no sense to me. We had similar issues with Aldi near our last
Home though. One great, one dreadful, similar size.

TatianaLarina · 11/02/2020 17:15

Waitrose and M&S are roughly the same. Asda food is revolting.

Sainsbury’s is a mixture of stuff that is better and cheaper than Waitrose - such as olives, butter puff pastry, coffee walnut cake; stuff that is the same - lemon or cherry tart; and stuff that is worse - all their ready meals, Chinese, Indian, Italian, biscuits, free from etc.

RedRiverShore · 11/02/2020 17:15

I shop in both Waitrose and M&S stores and mostly buy the delicious things that Tesco does not sell, also the shopping experience in Waitrose is good and I like to browse. I can't bare Tesco and Asda store but am happy to get my general shopping and heavy stuff from Tesco online each week as I like the online shopping with Tesco just not the store.

Ragwort · 11/02/2020 17:16

I do like Waitrose, the whole shopping experience is just so nice Blush plus the complimentary newspaper if you spend over £10 is such a good deal.

But agree with a PP, the best supermarket is Booths .... I am currently planning a few days away in the Lake District, my DH asked which part of the Lakes scenery I preferred ....... I just want to be near a Booths Grin.

Sparklingbrook · 11/02/2020 17:16

Waitrose is better than M&S for ingredients if you are going to actually cook.

PermanentTemporary · 11/02/2020 17:18

Waitrose own brand food is not grown in sewage sludge. Maybe that only matters if you're lazy like me and eat a lot of stuff raw and unpeeled. They were the only supermarket not to be found to be selling horsemeat incorrectly labelled. I also believe their suppliers are treated better but I could be wrong.

NemophilistRebel · 11/02/2020 17:19

Oh booths, now you’re talking.
I only get to go when I’m on holiday in the lakes
