Those bloody awful tempered panels....

...in place of wooden balustrades below the hand rail on staircases and landings.

I hate them with a vengeance. I’m house hunting and they are fecking EVERYWHERE at the moment. Small scale developers building new houses are obsessed with them, along with grey gloss kitchens.

They are going to date SO badly and be really expensive to replace.

They make your house look like a shopping centre or a doctors surgery.

They will be a bugger to keep clean, especially if you have kids and dogs.

They don’t make your house look cool and edgy like something off Grand Designs, they are a suburban abomination and it needs to stop.

They are going to be this decade’s equivalent of pebble dashing or avocado bathroom suites.

AIBU?

I looked at a house online that was like that Tweet

It was furnished in a very Next Home kind of style and every single thing in it was plain grey except the sanitary ware and the children’s duvet covers. I’m all for carrying a colour theme from room to room in some subtle way, to give it a sense of flow, but that was one of the most soulless and depressing interiors I’ve ever seen.

I see loads of coloured sinks at least on Instagram so think the coloured suite will be back at some point soon!

I think this is what is meant, Maggie (if the pic attaches!)

I'm with you OP - the worst is when it's completely out of keeping with the style of house.

Someone's built two new semi-detached houses near us in a traditional local style (think white clapboard cottage). For some unknown reason they've decided to put tempered glass panels up the staircases and it looks AWFUL. They've also chosen modern-style double glazed doors that really don't suit the house.

And no I definitely haven't been stalking local houses on Rightmove....

My house has loads of panelled glass doors, presumably the designer wanted to let light flow throughout or somesuch

Clearly didnt allow for kids with sticky fingers, takes forever to clean them

I have four cats - if I had those they would constantly have smears of cat nose on them Hmm

Hang on, what? Frog tape walls were all the rage on DIYOAB before I got booted out for not being enough of a vacuous hun - and that was probably 2 years ago now.

Oh yes they are still as popular as ever on there Grin

As is fablon everywhere - particularly the fake-marble stuff - and the broken CD stair risers Shock

MaggieFS · 11/02/2020 15:36

Thanks @marjolaine I think I'm ok Grin

FizzyGreenWater · 11/02/2020 16:10

I had to google 'broken cd stairs'

aaaaaargh how horrible.

Agree with most new interiors stuff looking like a just-opened health centre. And cheap! Plasticky looking furniture and especially HATE the mirrored furniture/grey everything else with lots of plush cushions look - tacky cheap tacky cheap.

PlopTeeth · 11/02/2020 16:29

I honestly thought this was an AIBU about Question Time or some other news-type panel show! 🤣. Instead I’m learning lots about current interior design trends.
